Anyway, I have to wait until sometime in May (when Lent is over) to post to political threads (it's a long story). So, I figured I'd start this one and let you folks who are ready to puke due to all the political threads can come puke here, or words to that effect. Dibs on the big chunks!

There is a coliseum named after him here in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a good friend of Fort Worth Star-Telegram owner Amon G. Carter.

This quote has come to mind a great many times lately. It may look grim at the moment for the Democrats but the alternative has never looked very attractive to me and after the past 8 years, hopefully the Republicans have lost their allure for a great many people.

At some point, Will made some remark right at the start of WWII..here is one version:

" a story concerning another Oklahoman, Will Rogers. The cause of U.S. entry into World War One -- they used to tell us in high school -- was German submarines sinking U.S. ships. Just before the U.S. declared war, a newspaper reporter asked Will Rogers how he would handle the problem.

"It's simple," he replied, "I'd drain the water from the oceans and send the U.S. cavalry out to round-up the submarine crews."

"Great," said the reporter, "and how would you drain the oceans?"

Rogers replied: "Don't ask me, I'm in policy, not operations."

I heard it that he said "Boil the ocean" and when asked how, he replied, "I'm just the idea man...we have technical people to figure out the details"

In any case, he made a point.

Bill, Will Rogers died in 1935, about four years before the start of WWII. I'm not doubting he said those things, just the timing.

When a Congressman complained about one of his colleagues inserting Will's remarks in the Congressional Record, saying that he objected to the words of a professional joke maker being quoted there, Rogers replied,"Compared to those guys, I'm an amateur. Everytime they make a joke it's a law, and every they make a law, it's a joke!"
