Hi Sonny I liked the way you and,Bobby played and sang ruby. Because it was cool cause I watched you both on my you tube the way you originally done it.Because that song was done the right way.I going to get learn how to play the mandolin I hope our seven and half year old is learning how sing by us going to church about every sunday.It was cool watching you and bobby play all them years I was little.I think Bobby and you were the best playing that Ruby song. Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper did 'Stoney (Are You Mad at Your Gal)'back in the late forties or early fifties. Same exact tune.

Hi there Melissa - I just checked back in - sorry it took a couple of days there. Here's one of the verses and a chorus with the chord change spots:

(D)Ruby, Ruby, honey are you (A)mad at your (D)man?

(D)I sit here in the shade, I shovel with the spade. I'm diggin' in the (A)ground's cold (D)mine. (Etc.)

Words are quite similar to versions of Cold Rain and Snow, a traditional song as well of course as mentioned above Reuben's Train and Cousin Emmy's version.

Using D/A, is it mostly D with a quick A at the end of the lines?

That's what I had decided to post this evening if you hadn't found chords by then (except I would have probably used G/D or 1/5)

Thanx for all your help you guys. I've checked out a few different sites that list lyrics, and so far, they have all said 'shady so cold' - altho' shanty does make more sense. We watched Ricky Skaggs on You Tube, and the guitar player standing behind him was playing D and A chords with the capo on the second fret, so we tried that and it seemed to work. Also most of the videos of artists we watched seemed to say 'shady' as well. I almost wondered if he was digging her a grave because he had plans to get rid of her or something.....I don't know, I just thought there had to be some sort of meaning to this one. Anyhow, thanks again so much!!!!!

This song is older than the Osbornes. Cynthia Carver (Cousin Emmy), an influential radio performer of the 1930s and 1940s, made it, mostly out of "Old Reuben," a traditional banjo song. She's responsible for the distinctive chorus which is the real trademark of the song.

What's the rest of the verse with the "shady so cold" part? I don't remember it.

I'm not sure there's really much 'meaning' in the song. Seems like it was probably done around the same time that groups were making songs with a girlname and a batch of floating verses.
Ida Red, Katy Daly, Sadie, Sophronie, Pearl, etc.

Hello.... I was just wondering if any of you out there know the meaning of the song "RUBY" originally by the Osborne Brothers - sung by a young 7 year old Ricky Skaggs. Specifically as well, the line in one of the verses that reads: "I'll take you to my shady so cold"
Does anyone out there have any info? Thanx so much...
