Subject: Irish Hammered Dulcimer Player

A while back I requested information about a hammered dulcimer player who picked me up near Kilkenny in 1968 and drove me to a Fleadh Cheol in New Ross. This was the first hammered dulcimer I had ever seen. I'd like to find out more about this player and I can't seem to find the old thread that I posted a couple of years back. I just found a picture that I took in a New Ross parking lot of the gentleman and his dulcimer. I've posted it at
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=133330071&albumID=401695&imageID=17554092
If you know of any Irish hammered dulcimer players, please have a look.

The picture is only available to those who register with myspace. Could you put it somewhere where it is accessible to all of us?

And is this(CLICK!) the thread you started?

I put hammer in the Filter box and set it to All.

Thanks Sorcha. That's the thread.
Malcom, I'm not too computer savvy. Could suggest some place where I could post the picture.

you could post to www.myopera.com for free if you start an account there and it is fairly easy to do.

Great picture, Jim. I am pretty interested in that hammered dulcimer. Our first CD had a lot of hammered dulcimer on it. A lot of folks use it on the pretty little tinkly bits. We love using it on the reels and such. Great instrument. Makes me miss old Jim. He got away a few years ago, and we only have the hammered dulcimer on occasion when his daughter can play tunes with us.

All the best,

Mick

Thanks, I got a private message from someone called Ptarmigan and the player's name is Andy Dowling. He also sent a younger picture of Andy. I'll try again, this time I've posted at myopera as sufggested by Katlaughing. Try http://my.opera.com/JimYates/albums/showpic.dml?album=503399&picture=6951152

I've also posted the younger picture if you hit "next picture" you'll see it.

Well, my guess (and Martin Ryan's) in the original thread was right.

There are a couple of pictures of Andy in David Kettlewell's book about the hammered dulcimer, All The Tunes That Ever There Were, the title being a quote from Andy, who said 'You can play all the tunes that ever there were on the dulcimer'; see http://dulcimer.new-renaissance.com/.

Andy Dowling died in 1991 at the age of 92.
