This absolutely fascinating stuff, thanks Dave. As a personal side bar to the article., I googled HMS Orlando, the name of the Royal Navy armoured cruiser, in the photograph accompanying the article, and found this

HMS Orlando

I think this the same ship the photo was taken on.

Could some one copy & paste the article Dave's linked to. I can't open up PDF's for some reason & when I try it freezes my PC then I have to shut down. Thanks. Looking forward to reading the article, always interested in instruments that went to sea, some stand up better than the sailors that played them.
