Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Derbyshire Rant From: johnadams Date: 05 Apr 08 - 07:58 PM Of course it was! Thanks Dick. I should have remembered from my Red Shift days when we sang another of Bill's songs - 'No Cause For Alarm'. As an aside, Bill's got a recent CD release with many more new songs on it. I'm away from home right now and haven't got it to hand to quote details but it's worth checking out. J |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Derbyshire Rant From: GUEST,Georgina Boyes Date: 06 Apr 08 - 07:32 AM Jimmy's memory is quite right - Every man his skill must try He must turn out and not deny No bloody soldiers must he dread He must turn out and fight for bread The time has come you plainly see The government opposed must be Is also known as 'Jeremiah Brandreth's Complaint' and Barry Coope sings it as a prelude to Jim Boyes' song 'The Levelution' which the trio sing on 'Where You Belong' (No Masters NMCD15), the Song Cycle they were commissioned to write for the town of Belper in Derbyshire. Although the album is deleted now, they still perform 'The Levelution' live. Georgina |
Subject: Lyr Add: NOTTINGHAM CAPTAIN (Bill Prince) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Apr 08 - 10:54 PM Copied from Henry's Songbook, and corrected a bit based on the sound file (Thanks to Dick the Box for the links): NOTTINGHAM CAPTAIN (Bill Prince) CHORUS: Everyone their skill must try. We must turn out and not deny. No bloody soldier must we dread. We must turn out and fight for bread, For the time has come, you plainly see, The Government opposed must be. You working men of Derbyshire Who spend your life in grief and fear, Come take your pike staff in your hand And join our march to North England. The stockingers' trade has all come down. No work for us in village or town. For the Derby Rib from fashion did fall And left us with no work at all. Lord Liverpool said when the war was won That there'd be work for every man, But our children they still cry for bread. We working folk would be better dead. We call at every house and farm And demand of them to give us arms. We'll take each able bodied man To join our march to Nottingham. And when we come to Nottingham, There'll be beef and bread for everyone. We'll join the clouds coming from the north To show this government our worth. From Wakefield, Leeds and Manchester, They all will come to join us there; And then we'll march to London town To bring this tyrant Government down. (As recorded by Band of Hope (Roy Bailey, lead vocalist) on "Rhythm and Reds", 1994.) |
