Subject: Chord Req: Bonny ship the Diamond
From: olddude
Date: 05 Apr 08 - 08:08 AM

Well after 50 years of playing guitar I decided to try picking a banjo with these old fingers. I am awful but I am having loads of fun and found this old gold star 5 string that sounds very nice. I would like to try playing the Bonny Ship the Diamond but can't figure out the banjo part like I normally could for the guitar. Any help from you nice folks would me greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Why don't you figure it out on a guitar and then play it on your banjo?

This is what I come up with
The Diamond is a ship, my lads, for the Davis Straits she's bound;       a             C             G             a And the Quay it is all garnished with bonnie lassies round.Captain Thompson gives the order to sail the ocean wide,Where the sun it never sets, my lads, nor darkness dims the sky.         C    G      a And it's cheer up, my lads!                      D Let your hearts never fail!       C               G For the bonnie ship The Diamond       a       G       a

seems to work, I just keep working on it

I think you will find it is a minor key try Am.

I think you can just alternate Am/G (or Em/D, etc.)

Glad it helped. I think their might be a couple of points where if in Am, I might opt for an E instead of a G. eg. goes a (E) fishing for the (Am) whale.

Here are the chords in THE SINGING ISLAND, compiled by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger:

    Cm            Bb             Cm                        Bb
The Diamond is a ship, my lads, for the Davis Strait she's bound
       Cm             Bb    Cm       G7             Cm
And the quay it is all garnished with bonnie lassies round
       Cm                Bb    Cm                Bb
Captain Thompson gives the order to sail the ocean wide
          Cm          Bb       Cm       G7               Cm
Where the sun it never sets, my lads, nor darkness dims the sky
       Cm    (Bb)    Cm
So it's cheer up, my lads, let your hearts never fail
                         Cm      Bb       Cm    Bb       Cm
While the bonnie ship The Diamond goes a-fishing for the whale

I'm sorry, but after post, the position of the chords over the words doesn't remain as it ought to be. This could be clear:

The Dia(Cm)mond is a ship(Bb), my lads, for(Cm) the Davis Strait she's bound(Bb)
And the quay(Cm) it is all gar(Bb)nished(Cm) with bon(G7)nie lassies round(Cm)
Captain Thomp(Cm)son gives the or(Bb)der to(Cm) sail the ocean wide(Bb)
Where the sun(Cm) it never sets(Bb), my lads(Cm), nor dark(G7)ness dims the sky(Cm)
So it's cheer(Cm) up(Bb), my lads(Cm), let your hearts never fail
While the bonnie ship(Bb) The Dia(Cm)mond goes(Bb) a-fish(Cm)ing for(Bb) the whale(Cm)

You need to use <pre;> and </pre> tags for your first attempt to work.

I'll try what you have in Am:

    Am          G                      Am                G
The Diamond is a ship, my lads, for the Davis Strait she's bound
       Am             G             Am    E7      Am
And the quay it is all garnished with bonnie lassies round
       Am                G       Am             G
Captain Thompson gives the order to sail the ocean wide
          Am      G    Am                E7                Am
Where the sun it never sets, my lads, nor darkness dims the sky
       Am    (G)    Am
So it's cheer up, my lads, let your hearts never fail
          Am    G       Am             G               Am
While the bonnie ship The Diamond goes a-fishing for the whale

You folks are wonderful. I am having fun trying to work out the banjo. I bought a book showing scruggs three finger rolls. I must admit my old fingers are not what they use to be but I am like a kid with this thing. Thanks so much for the help. I am working on it for sure.

Dan

Here's how our little band plays it:

The Dia(Am)mond is a ship(G), my lads, for the Da(Am)vis Strait she's bound(G)
And the quay(Am) it is all gar(G)nished with bon(F)nie las(E)sies round(Am)
Captain Thomp(Am)son gives the or(G)der to sail(Am) the ocean wide(G)
Where the sun(Am) it never sets(G), my lads, nor dark(F)ness dims(E) the sky(Am)
So it's cheer(Am) up(G), my lads(Am), let your hearts(Am) nev(G)er fail(Am)
While the bon(Am)nie ship The Dia(Am)mond goes a-fish(Am)ing for the whale(D)

Yes, that's right, "D" at the end of the chorus. We hold it for 8 beats (same number of beats as that Am-G-Am-G bit in the first line of the verse). Then we do an instrumental befor the next verse, using the following chords (I'm writing it out with one chord per beat here):

Am, Am, G, G, F, F, E, E
Am, Am, G, G, F, E, Am, Am
