Here is new one. It's a demo of a waltz I wrote it for fiddle but after making this demo on banjo, I think I like that way. Who needs fiddle?

Thank you DfS for your kind words. I hope you'll enjoy the next YT upload...VERY different from D.Y.S.O. All this 'internet activity' has come about since I retired in 2004. The difference is that now I set my own deadlines & I compose when the muse strikes me...which is not as often as I would like! I suspect Folk Music will creep into my work eventually, but my career also included pop & rock, classical in it's broadest sense & experimental, which covers a multitude of sins! At my age, being able to take things at my own pace is a real bonus. Good fortune with your own works,
                                           Happy Music Making,
                                                                            Nigel.

I'm starting to experiment with making video out of still pictures. This is today's effort: Scribble Monster, the First.

The tune is also something of a musical version of a "Scribble" -- just me playing around with the F major key. The video probably doesn't need music, except that I find Hearing folks lose their attention without it...

Steve -- It sure is, isn't it? It can really help shut up that dratted Inner Editor when it gets cranky, and insists there's nothing new or interesting to look at or think about. Nothing like good, solid, empirical evidence for proving the point to the contrary.

EJ -- Thanks, muchly! It was a lot of fun to do, too (though I discovered that fiddling with the scanner took the most effort).

CapriUni, it's just occurred to me that what you need is a "rostrum camera" instead of a scanner. If you set up a camera on a tripod, with a cable release (so you don't have to press the shutter release & risk moving it) you can have the work on a table or what ever, instead of upside-down on the scanner glass. You need to rig the camera so it's pointing straight down, which may not be possible without extra extensions for the tripod. You could try putting the work on a sloping tray or board, so long as you can stop it sliding off. I'm looking forward to seeing your next one!

Here's another attempt at making a video from a drawing-in-progress:

http://youtu.be/-1uNuDcGI0w

This time, the music is something I wrote specifically for this piece. I was attempting to match the strongest individual notes at the end to the syllables of the words as they came up, but I missed the mark a bit.

This will just take more practice...

Any excuse to call an afternoon doodling "work." ;-)

Final one (for this week at least) added to MickPearceMusic channel:

From O'Lochlainn's Irish Street Ballads (with a few alterations): The Lamentation of Hugh Reynolds

BTW, I have a question about uploading. The files I'm uploading are mp4(H264+AAC) with 1280x720 resolution and audio bitrate 384. It's taking about 2.5 hrs to upload a 5 min video. I saw that youtube recommend uploading the highest res you can (and this is not my highest), but is it worth it? What do others upload and what sort of time does it take?

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on YouTube

I generally upload mpeg2 files with a video resolution of 720X576. My video camera isn't HD so there's no point in using HD formats for me.

A typical 3 - 4 minute video will upload in about 10 mins or even less.

Doing a quick check, my videos are about 50 - 100 MB. I imagine given the format you are using, yours are very much larger, possibly in the GB range hence the long upload times.

I think the videos get degraded in the conversion by You Tube (purely an impression) so I'm not sure it's worth uploading HD, though You Tube do let you specify whether or not your video is HD.

I've noticed that the videos on Vimeo seem to be of better visual quality than those on You Tube so if you have a camera that can give high quality, Vimeo may be worth investigating.

Thanks for the info Tootler. The files I uploaded were roughly in the range 300-500 Mb, which is still makes my uploads a lot longer than proportional from your times. Maybe I'll try sending a different format next time. (I just had a look at one of the ones I uploaded and my downloaded helper offers me 720p/480p/360p and 240p as options (as well as flv) so the max res I uploaded seems to be available.).

If anyone else has any suggestions I'd welcome them.

Mick

As mentioned before in this thread, Mudcatter Raymond Crooke, the prolific poster on YouTube, wrote a song about a Kentucky coal miner and mine safety activist, Charles Scott Howard, titled "Big Coal Don't Like This Man At All".

"Big Coal Don't Like This Man At All"

Well, Mr. Howard was fired by the coal company that he worked for back in May, 2011. He claims it was because of all the safety complaints he made. His case just went to trial last week. A public radio station in West Virginia did a story about Mr. Howard and his discharge case. It used Raymond's song both at the beginning and the end of the radio piece. Check it out below:

Nigel Patterson: "I suspect Folk Music will creep into my work eventually...."

(Pardon me for not replying sooner..I've been away from the computer for a while, while hibernating in the basement studio, composing..or doing a few gigs...then this thread came back up, and I FINALLY read your response.)

Yes, it will! ('Folk Music will creep into my work')
If you listen closer in, it certainly crept into mine..even when playing synth,..even though it's not 'folk music', per se.

You may have heard these before, but a few may not have....

Enjoy!

This one has 5 movements..ALL with their roots in folk..even in 3/4 time

This one is crossover, using guitars, but its roots are in folk...

Warmest Regards to performing musicians!!!!!
