Just checked, and it's back up and running! For those of you who don't have it bookmarked (or whatever), go here to get into the chatroom. For those uninitiated, it's a great time. We've been designating the top of the hour as the 'check-in' time for everyone to log on. Better odds of meeting each other.

Just to note that the chatroom has never, so far as I know, worked for people with Macintoshes, nor does it now (I have recently tried with two different Mac systems including OS8; and also tried both Netscape and Internet Explorer), so don't get your hopes up if you are a Mac person.

I tried and I was told I have a bad cookie. I've never had that problem before ;-) I reset the cookie and then I was no longer a member, so I redid my profile and I got back. I don't have Java enabled. It drives me crazy. It takes so damn long to load! Is that my problem?

JimBunch, Unless their is something in the java client that can look at a log somewhere then there is no reference to messages prior to someone joining. Think of it like walking into a room and talking with whoever is there.

Hi, Alison, Ihave thye same problem, but I think it's due to the time difference. I tend to log in in the evening, and 8.00 pm here is 3.00 in the afternoon in the states. Early morning checks on threads are at 2.00am American time. you have to type in the long box along the bottom , not in the main body..... when you press enter it'll move into that bit.........

I don't know what you can do to fix the java error Helen but I do know that you don't have to use the java interface. Any IRC client should be able to connect to Mudcat and then join the mudcat room. Of course that means that you will have to get an IRC client and install it. The one I use is mIRC and it is available from http://www.mirc.co.uk.

Banjoman_CO, you made it to the chat room but left rather quickly. I've been online since 00:10. You showed up at 00:12, left at 00:14, came back at 00:17 and left at 00:18 according to my log. Sorry I didn't see you right away but I was catching up on the threads.

WHY do we not have better instructions/help/answers about how & why this works? I have had IRC for 3 years and chat in it regularly...yet nothing tells me how and where to find Mudcat among the 8427 IRC servers..(and I 'can' enable Java, too...but fat lotta good it does me! IS IT WIN95 dependant? ...why does it work for some and not for others??....and who IS on first?..and what IS the difference between a duck?...and WHY can't I go back to Constantinople?..(oh, never mind..I know that one..)

I'm having similar problems. I click on the chatroom button and get a lovely gray screen with mudcat logo on the top. Or I go through prodigy.net global chat and still can't get there! Help!!! harpgirl

Don...I seem to be having a similar ICQ problem and there seems to be a lot of us who aren't. I wish I was more "literate" about this damn thing. I follow the instructions and poof...nothing! I had no trouble on the chatroom which Max set up a few months back, but it doesn't seem to be the same now.

This new chat room has nothing to do with ICQ, that was the old one which was shut down,(I still use ICQ for chats with people...... I am #16719177)..... and I still prefer ICQ...... the new mudcat one is completely different and you do not need to have ICQ at all....

I never seem to bump into anyone in this new one....

..I 'think' I may have figured out what someone was telling me earlier...

In regards to getting in by 'regular' IRC....somehow, www.mudcat.org has been made an IRC server...whether it REALLY is, or just simulates it somehow, I have NO idea...but IF you have an IRC client..(a program that will go do IRC stuff.) I use mIRC..but the are a number of them....

somewhere in your IRC program is a list of servers..(Dalnet, Undernet...etc...) well..you simply ADD www.mudcat.org as one of those servers!!then connect to it...(on port 6667, if it isn't already)

then you watch it sign on...and when it is done,you type #mudcat in the box where it asks what room you want to join!

need more info?? just ask...(I tried, but got shorthand and had to work it out..)

the really important concept, if you are trying to use IRC (mIRC, GlobalChat, Pirch, IRCLE..(for MACs), etc...is that there is an IRC server NAMED "www.mudcat.org" now..(this is what stumped me)...you CANT get to the room on some other server...(oh, you can open a room named 'mudcat' somewhere else, but it will not be the one the java-based chat is using)

I'm glad to see it on an IRC server. I can use it now. Since I have IRC-II which is a Text based system, on which most of those others were based on. For those using a unix system, type irc on it or irc www.mudcat.org and it should connect to it. Once in there, use the command /server #mudcat.
