Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Night the Goat Broke Loose on Grand Parad From: GUEST,derry Date: 09 Apr 11 - 03:29 PM My recollections are from over 50 years ago! Subsequent recordings have modified the words and tune, though it's still a great song. I remember hearing from an otter hunter in the 1950s who said the song was composed on the return from Otter Hunting in Inniscarra while walking down the old inniscarra road past the mental hospital in Cork. He came fron Roman St. in the Blackpool area and he had two companions, probably including Sean Calla(gh)an who was renowowned as the composer of the Armoured Car ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6W-7TSfkaw&feature=related )These were compositions of working class men in Cork at the time and reflected the social composition of the Society and had a fierce true quality in values as perceived by the individual. My recollection is Paddy McGinty bought a COTTAGE BY THE SIDE OF Sunday's Well, on the north side of THE CITY BY the Lee. He lived all alone in his LITTLE COUNTRY home, So he bought a goat to keep him company. Says MCGINTY to the goat, "For you I'll buy a coat, And a visit to Cork city we will pay", But HE NERALY kicked up mountainS when he saw the BERWICK fountain, AND BEGORRA (we weren't so susceptible to stereotypes in those days) HE broke loose on Grand Parade. CHORUS: Well, on the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade, All the people of Cork city got afraid, And the shouts went through the country, that The Glen had won the County On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. Well, Mary Ellen TIMOR (I know it doesn't scan but look at what come later!) stARTED OUT FROM Woodford BournesEZ corner, Sayin' SHE'LL catch a train to Dublin or SHE'D die", But the goat came up behind her and he gave her such a winder She hadn't time to bid her friends goodbye. MRS McGEE FORGOT HER CORNS WHEN SHE SAW HIS TWO LONG HORNS AND DARTED FOR the Munster Arcade, And it was a sad bereavement when she landed on the pavement On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. CHORUS: Well, on the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade, Mary Anne Fitzgibbons got afraid. She went haring down the Coal Quay On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. When the people up in SHANDON ST. (These were North Side people who composed the song!) eard the dreadful news, They CRIED out in vengeance what they'd do, So they lined UP in batches, with HAMMERS and WITH hatchets, But when the goat CAME UP they all withdrew. Now the goat came through a door, roaring like a HOOR, Followed by Cork city fire brigade, And 'twas at the South GATE Pier, THAT he FELL INTO the Weir And was never seen again on Grand Parade. Like Gilbert and Sullivans song "I've got a little list" this song is ultimately adaptable to changing circumstances. Reference to Cathy Barry refer to a famous lodging house keeper in the Coal Quay (better known as a Sheebeen where drink was available after official liscensing hours) and Klondike a famouse tramp who'se claim to fame was having been involved in the Alaska Gold rush, an unlikely pair to have hired a side car (horse taxi as seen the the Quiet Man Film) to leave the city! The chorus varied but I remember in particular on the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade, ALL THE ECHO BOYS IN PANA MADE A RAID, THEY CAME SAUNTERING DOWN THOUGH PANA WITH BUNCHES OF BANANAS on the Night etc. Pana is Patrick St., the main thoroughfare. presumably bananas were a rare item due to wartime rationing at the time. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on grand From: Ross Campbell Date: 08 Apr 08 - 03:26 PM I bought a Sean O Riada record in Eason's, O'Connell Street. Dublin around 1973. Bought it for "The Rights of Man" and other tunes, and was disgusted to find half the tracks had Sean O Se's high, nasal tenor on them. Sorry, that was my impression back then. He obviously had a good rapport with an audience, and Sean O Riada must have thought highly of him. I remember the "Ailliliu.......an Poc ar Buile" chorus from one of the songs, presumably that listed above. I have a couple of Na Fili LPs, but don't remember the song from there. Ross |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on gra From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 08 Apr 08 - 02:46 PM Coal Quay is often pronounced Coal KAY rather than "key" Barracka = Barrack Street, and the last syllable is weighted so it comes out something like Barrackaaahh Patrick Street gets morphed into PANaahhh in the same way, don't ask me why, I've only been here 17 years which is like 17 seconds. Katty Barry was a well-known character who used to hang around the Coal Quay. There's a picture of her in Dennehy's pub. Not sure what/where Woodford Boden's corner is - Peace: If it's the pub I'm thinking of, it's an empty shell at the moment, awaiting refurbishment or whatever. And (again I may have the wrong place in mind) it wasn't even called that for very long. It's had a couple of names since I've lived in the city. I'll be walking past it on Thursday and will report back if there's anything interesting to tell. A much better pub IMO is around the corner in South Main Street, An Spailpín Fánach. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on grand From: GUEST Date: 08 Apr 08 - 02:36 PM Thank you folks. And Yes, it is the Cork goat, and not the Kerry goat which I seek. And also yes, the goat of which Dick Hogan sang, Paddy McGinty bought a goat... I have a poor reproduction of the Dick Hogan recording. Unfortunately being a Yank, and although not frequently challenged by accents, the listing of local land marks and places, coupled with the poor recording quality, has me at a loss for a few key phrases. Any help would of course be greatly appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on grand From: Declan Date: 08 Apr 08 - 02:28 PM The line that starts She went haring down the Coal Quay should end - "It was worse than any polka" - strange as it may seem there's an internal rhyme in there. |
Subject: Lyr Add: NIGHT THE GOAT BROKE LOOSE ON GRAND PARAD From: Declan Date: 08 Apr 08 - 02:25 PM The following is from the singing of Dick Hogan on his fine album "Wonders of the World". There might be a few errors in there but you'll get the gist. Hopefully someone who knows the Geography of Cork City better than me can clear up the place names. THE NIGHT THE GOAT BROKE LOOSE ON GRAND PARADE Well, Paddy McGinty bought a house, and lived in Sunday's Well, Situated on the north side of the Lee. Well, he lived all alone in his cosy little home, So he bought a goat to keep him company. Well, says Paddy to the goat, "For you I'll buy a coat, And a visit to Cork city we will pay", But the goat kicked up a mountain when he saw the Barrack fountain, On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. CHORUS: Well, on the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade, All the people of Cork city got afraid, And the shouts went through the country, that The Glen had won the County On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. Well, Mary Ellen Warner stood at Woodford Boden's corner, Sayin' “I'll catch a train to Dublin or I'll die”, But the goat came up behind her and he gave her such a winder She hadn't time to bid her friends goodbye. And Mary Ann Fitzgibbons got her drawers all torn to ribbons Running to the Munster Arcade, And it was a sad bereavement when she landed on the pavement On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. CHORUS: Well, on the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade, Mary Anne Fitzgibbons got afraid. She went haring down the Coal Quay On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. Well, the people up in Barracka, when they heard the dreadful news, They all swore out in vengeance what they'd do, So they lined the street in batches, armed with saws and hatchets, But when the goat appeared, they all withdrew. Now the goat came through a door, roaring like a whore, Followed by Cork city fire brigade, And 'twas at the South dock Pier, where he landed in the Weir And was never seen again on Grand Parade. CHORUS: Well, on the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade, All the people of Cork city got afraid, Connie Doyle and Cathy Barry took a sidecar out to Blarney, On the night the goat broke loose on Grand Parade. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on grand From: Peace Date: 08 Apr 08 - 02:19 PM Found this: "This pub has closed down. It has been that way for a while. I don't know what the future plans are for the building. (22/3/07) The Goat Broke Loose, known as 'The Goat' is on the Grand Parade in Cork. For those of us interested in Cork's heritage and songs this sounds like a really interesting pub. Two words 'it's not'. The goat is a very big pub that certainly caters for the younger generation. I used to go in there a lot but haven't been there in about 3 years. Funnily enough the last time we were there we were pretty much told we were too old to come in, at 21!! Anyway you will always see bouncers at the door, who seem to like taking the piss! As you walk in there are seats to the left and the right and as you walk up a few steps the bar is on the right. If you continue walking up there is seating to your left and the bar takes a turn to the right and there is another area that's kind of enclosed that you can sit in. Another few steps will bring you up to the back section. There is plenty of seating here too and on my last visit they had two car racing arcade games. Not very cultural!! The one redeeming feature are the lyrics of 'The day the goat broke loose on grand parade' which are on the back wall. The pints of Murphy's are not to be sampled, although they used to do some great cocktails. There is a balcony at the back where the dj vacates. The toilets are relatively big but lacking in privacy. Girls going to powder their nose can take a free glance into the gents as they pee! They may have changed that now. The toilets used to get extremely manky. The Goat is a pub i will probably never go into again but you never know. There are so many possibilities with a pub of its size, its a pity. Don't let me put you off going in. Make your own judgments as I've made mine. I used to think it was a nice pub. Final comment: It's been a long time since I've been in this pub but i still pass the place and it looks like the same situation as three years ago. It's a prominent Cork pub that enjoys a great location but it ain't my scene anymore." from http://www.munsterpubs.com/?p=44 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on gra From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 08 Apr 08 - 01:44 PM Fair enough - never could keep my mad goats straight. Marc, if you type "poc ar buile" into the Lyrics & Knowledge Search box on the upper corner of the screen, it brings up a bunch of them, all rampaging away (Cork vs. Kerry, no doubt). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on grand From: Declan Date: 08 Apr 08 - 01:43 PM Martin, You managed to post three times in the time it took me to type three lines. I have Dick's version somewhere. Give me a while and I'll post the lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on grand From: Declan Date: 08 Apr 08 - 01:38 PM Bonnie, That's a Kerry goat. Marc was looking for a Cork one. I know the song well but don't have the lyrics to hand. If someone else doesn't post the words here in the next while, I'll see if I can dig them out. The song starts, I Think Paddy McGinty bought a goat but its not the one about Paddy McG's goat either. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: the night the goat broke loose on gra From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 08 Apr 08 - 01:00 PM There are also some other English words to it - I remember a line about setting out in a Ford car or something - which was on a Na Fili album called (I think) One Day For Recreation. I'm pretty sure it was sung by Seán Ó Sé who guested on the record, though it could have been Tomás Ó Canainn. Writing this from memory so details are a bit hazy - |
