I've started this cos I can't find anyone else has done. Correct me if I'm wrong.

9th, 10th and 11th May... Just called the pub and all is happening. Camping is available.

I hope we can be there singing, not selling Lemonade! That's me and The Wolf.

Cheers

Sal

Yes the 11th Fox and Hounds will be from Friday 9th May whenever anyone arrives until Sunday after you've all gone, usually 3 ish. Sessions take place Friday night, Saturday lunchtime / afternoon, evening, Sunday morning on the Tor for those who want an early morning sing and then Sunday lunchtime. It will be the usual £5 for the weekend plus accommodation with all the money goimng to the Precious Lives appeal for a children's hospice in Cornwall. for those who haven't been before it is very laid back with no pressure to do anything. You can sing, play, tell a story, juggle etc when Bendigo gets to you [not some dreadful disease but the fox] and you will be appreciated. You can sing a rousing shanty or a quiet ballad as we sing in the skittle alley. The pub has its own campsite, bunkhouse for indoor camping, which you will need to book with the pub and hotel rooms. Hook ups will need to be booked in advance. See you there. pm me for more info an directions if you need it.

What is the point?

All the 2008 postings should be transferred to this thread or everything just becomes confusing.

Ok so we had fewer people there this year, but the singing was good and there were new as well as old faces. It can't be a big weekend as the skittle alley is so small and as it was baking hot this year loads of people went off for the day on the moors or into Tavistock and came back for the evening sing ~ which included birthday cake for Hawker. Sundays Tor walk was excellent and some even went onto the second tor this year and they had an audience at the top too!

A wonderful weekend, as usual. I don't think the turnout was down that much, but the glorious weather meant that people could go up on the moor, or off to town, or just chill and chat on the campsite, so the skittle alley sometimes looked a little thinly populated.

Great to meet lots of new (and old) faces, many there for only a part of the weekend. We did see Sal but never got to hear you sing (or even chat), because we went shopping in Tavistock on Saturday morning and stayed on to watch Tinners Morris in the Square at lunchtime. So when we got back to the F&H the sigaround was already in full swing, and you had to leave before it got round to you again.

And an absolutely glorious sing on the Tor this morning, with no less than fifteen making it to the top, and half a dozen going on to the second tor for furter singing.

A thoroughly magical weekend from beginning to end. Thanks to Kathy and Jon, not forgetting Dave & Frank and all their staff. Count me in for next year.

Scooby,
I am sure nobody is having a go at you, least of all Hils! The weekend did see fewer faces, and yes it did give each of us there a chance to sing a little more, While Sal was there it was particularly quiet, Saturday lunch usually is as a lot go to Tavistock or up on the moor if the weather is good. Saturday night was still really busy though, I only got to sing one song all night - and it was my birthday too! I think Sal may have enjoyed the evening sing better! but there you go. Friday night and Saturday night were both full-on singing and excellent - but for me, the highlight this year really was the walk up Brat Tor to stand by Widgery Cross and sing LOUD at the countryside was fantastic. The sun was amazing, The Lark was in the clear air, There was wild mountain thyme and The company was great. Well done those who went on and sang on the second Tor, we could hear you at the stream still singing! Have photos, will post soon. Oh - and thank you so much all of you who made my birthday such an excellent day, for your cards - and for the cake! YUM! and HUGE hugs to Ali to get well soon, and Andrew and Carole ....... big hugs for a speedy recovery to those sore throats and chesty coughs!!! We NEED you well for Bude ;0)
Well done Jon and Kathy, I thought it was a lovely weekend.
Cheers, Lucy

No offence given or taken by anyone or to anyone. The whole ethos of the weekend is that people can come and go as they wish and there will be an opportunity to sing over the weekend. A few years ago we seriously reconsidered the whole weekend, should we have workshops, should we have an afternoon concert etc and asked loads of people what they wanted. The answer was a resounding, 'leave it alone'. What people wanted was a very relaxed weekend away in a beautiful setting where they could sing if they wanted during the day but that there would be a gathering on the Saturday night, with smaller sessions on all over the weekend. They didn't want anything formalised. They wanted to be able to go and play at being a tourist in Tavistock or go walking on the moors, go and visit Lydford Gorge etc or just have space on the campsite to be able to sit and chat with friends, play boules etc. The idea of the sing on the Tor came from the half a dozen or so who walked their dogs or went for a walk up there any way and it has now become part of the weekend. What other singing weekend offers the opportunity to go and sing on the top of a Tor? When people don't want it any more it just won't happen. Consequently, because of the nature of the weekend we have never advertised it as a festival, more of a 'sort of Song and Ale', but it isn't that really either. It's a gathering of a like minded people doing what they want to over a weekend and having a sing if they want to. Like Sal said, it is very cheap, only £5 for the weekend plus your choice of accommodation which you book with the pub, and all the mooney raised goes to a nominated charity. This year we raised over £250 for the Precious Lives Appeal for a new Children's Hospice for West Devon and Cornwall. If you just want to come for a session then you put in a donation. So, we'll carry on next year, same weekend as always, 2nd weekend in May and if you want to come to something a bit different that is very laid back and very friendly, you know where we'll be.
Thanks for the flowers, Hawker, much appreciated; Ali, hope all goes well and we'll see you soon; Thanks to everyone who has sent pm's and emails.

Lovely weekend and for me the informality was a real plus, so I have to agree with the 'leave it alone' brigade.

Had to leave very early on Sunday morning so didn't get chance to say goodbye to most people. I'll plan to stay longer next time, sounds like it was a great shame to miss the walk and the sing.

I was really impressed with the acoustics in the Skittle alley -great for the big choruses and the quieter songs alike.

Hopefully be there next year, monster drive and all...

Thanks Jon and Kathy

This was my first visit to The Fox and Hounds. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this lovely relaxed and sociable weekend at a fantastic venue. I met old and new friends and enjoyed all the singing and socialising, but the highlight of the weekend had to be the wonderful Sunday morning singing on the Tor - absolutely divine!
Thanks to everybody who made this such a lovely weekend, but especially John and Kathy for running it. I shall certainly be there next year.

A lovely weekend all round. Thank you so much Kathy & Jon for all your efforts once again, in making the Fox & Hounds weekend so special in many ways.

A fine gathering of friends, old & new, with excellent singing & socialising. The wonderful weather this year gave us all a chance to bask in sun, enjoy the scenery & generally chill out. That's what this one's all about ~ A perfect relaxing break!

The Tor on Sunday was very special, I'd forgotten just how exhilarating it felt to be up there singing with friends. It must be one of the most stunning locations for a singaround, maybe we'll get even more in the group next year? it's well worth the effort.

All this, & a good result for the Hospice charity too.

Well I should have stayed on, shame I couldn't. I sang a couple of songs before Snuffy arrived so I did get a go! You all had such a lovely time. It just goes to show doesn't it; you don't have to pay for expensive tickets to have a festival. This is the kind of festival that must be supported because I think this is going to be they way it's all going.

Hi Kath and Jon

Many Thanks for a lovely weekend. Back home as relaxed as last year.
This is one of the nicest weekends that any one could attend. Weather this year a bonus. Singing great and relaxed. Great time singing up on the Tor. To me one of those special times in life to be remembered and with such lovely people. Thankyou all. Allan

It would appear "My Guru said" that there are two Fox and Hounds Folk Clubs one in Devon and one in Kent hence the confusion.

The Fox and Hounds in Devon is a weekend sing that has gone on for the past 11 years. There isn't a folk club there. The folk club is in Kent and excellent it is too.

Looks like this thread's been an unlucky one for me with at least 2 people misinterpreting my words, I feel quite sad about that. I've never said that there were 2 clubs! There were 3 threads in total, 2 for this weekend in Devon & one for the Club in Kent. Funny how black and white becomes grey sometimes *grin*

Sounds like I've missed a fabulous weekend *sob* but I'm so glad you've all had such a good time! Really wish we could have joined you but will just have to make up for it next year!! Love & Hugs to all!

From all accounts, it sounded like a fab weekend, such a shame work buggered it up again! Still, there's always next year. Are you guys coming to Wareham? It would be great to see the pair of you, and I've got cameras again!

Wassail!! Chris and Fiona

Sounds like you all had a great weekend - perhaps we should have a fox and hounds exchange program at some point? (I help run the Fox and hounds folk club in Kent). Thanks for the kind words, and for pointing Alan in the right direction!

Chris

Definitley on! Our weekend of singing is always the 2nd weekend in May. It is very small but is so laid back. For more details please see the thread above. The singers come from all over the country so perhaps some of us could travel down to Kent at some point.

the photo's are lovely so sorry I couldn't make it of course last year when I did make it the weather was so bad that the Dartmoor Rescue were bringing people off the moor. Just my luck to miss the opportunity to sing on the Tor on a sunny year

Seems to me that if we had one of those walks every wkend some of those pots would turn into six packs!

It looks like you had a wonderful walk. Wish I had been there.

Oh how lovely! Postie came earlier & gave me your card, thank you all so much, it was a lovely surprise *grin* I really missed singing with you all, but am looking forward to seeing everyone again soon!

Stitches out in an hour or so & I'll see if I've done myself any damage while I was messing around in the garden using the hand too much.
