Bucks County Folk Club Nice people, friendly. So popular that they have to limit the length of songs so that everyone gets to sing.

Lewes Arms, Roal Oak in Lewes, Seaford, Orpington Lib.Club, Musical Traditions in London, Elsie`s, to name but a few. These are clubs that not only welcome listeners and performers but, over the course of the year offer the widest variety of guest artists/istes to suit anyones taste if they are interested in "fok music".

The Naseby Square Folk Club , Market Harborough, second Thursday of the month - meets in the local community centre which doesn't sound like an atmospheric setting, but success is down to the bloke who runs it and to the supper organised by his wife. Always packed with both performers and audience -starts at 7.30.

Worthington Folk Club at the Malt Shovel, Worthington near Ashby de la Zouch - once again always packed on second Monday of the month. There are loads of good clubs in the East Midlands, will perhapos add afew more later on.

I dont know if regular song sessions count but the First Tuesday at the Kings Head in Bridgnorth, the second tuesday at the Robin Hood at Ironbridge and the third Tuesday at the Boat in Jackfield are all great just a shame they each only happen once a month, the first Sunday at the Black Swan in Jackfield run by Bill Caddick is just stupendous, a generally marvellous evening. I miss having a regular weekly folk club since I moved to Shropshire but the quality of what we do have is really good

I've been a bit out of the loop for the past four years or so, but Sharp's, Herga and Maidenhead were excellent. Favourite, though, was the Waveney Folk Club in Oulton Broad from 1979 - 1984. Truly a land of lost content!

There are many great clubs out there but my favourites have to be Croxdale Folk Club which is held in The Daleside Arms on a Tuesday with many great acts coming up including Brian Willoughby and Cathryn Craig on 22 April and in june the excellent Wendy Arrowsmith. That leads me on to my next choice which is of course Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club which is held once a month. They also hold excellent folk weekends twice a year. Paul and Wendy make you feel like you are in their living room they are so friendly. Check them out at http://www.kirkbyfleethamfolkclub.co.uk/ as they are holding a great event this Saturday.

Marlow Bottom, Marlow, Bucks., ---a club with high musical standards, and a regular weekly change of venue between 3 different pubs, viz. T J Reilly's, ( Marlow Bottom), The Prince Albert,( Frieth ), and The Old Ship, ( Cadmore End ). I am ,of course, entirely biased. Next up would be Herga, I guess; Maidenhead is OK, but the seating arrangements are a bit sad ( sadly !! ). Sorry, Terry et al !!

Excellent resident singers, great guests (every two weeks), good singers nights on the other weeks, pleasant surroundings, cask beer, reasonable prices & a 43 year track record.

When I was last in England, The Red Lion in Kings Heath Birmingham was a favourite spot as was The Birmingham Traditional Music Club on Sunday nights at the Wagon and Horses on Adderley Street

Folk on the Moor is brilliant as is Bodmin Folk Club (and they were both in the South west last time I looked).
Two other great favourites of mine (though notmin the South West, are the Everyman in Suffolk - well run, well attended, great atmosphere, and the Black Diamond in Birmingham is also excellent, with fantastic chorus singing and really good bunch of regular singers.

Well my favs are:- Grand Union , Swan in the Rushes and the Packhorse all in and around Loughborough.
Black Diamond (when you can find it) and Birmingham Trad, Port Mahon in Oxford, Okehampton is a must,but my favourite is the second saturday session we have in our kitchen.

I've got to second Micca and mention Cottingham Live, East Yorkshire. Fantastic venue, friendly crowd, amazing talent, great voices, 'elastic band' and visitors often return having had such a great time. Weekly, Wednesday - 8pm start.

Well that ought to disqualify them, if they keep bloody closing. Christmas ...fair enough, but the best ones keep chugging away the rest of the year, through hell and high water.

I tend to think a town is suffering from acute moral failure if there isn't some sort of folk club. Even if its not the sort that plays my sort of music - there should be some citizens with enough red corpuscles to get something going.

Stratford always amazes me. You'd think an arty place like that would be snooing with folk clubs, but alas! Nary a sausage....

There are good clubs in the Southwest ...
Swindon (every Friday; shuts down July/August but unofficially continues with singarounds throughout that period) plenty of excellent guests and resident legends Ted & Ivy ...
Devizes (Mondays) - Bob & Gill Berry's club - terrific guests (about once a month) and enjoyable singarounds otherwise. Definitely deserves supporting. Great for choruses!
Bradford-on-Avon (Tuesdays) - no guests; very popular, continues throughout the year.
Highworth (twice a month - Wednesdays) has occasional guests, really friendly and well-established club.
Corsham (Thursdays) is terrific - really good attendances every week, and a really high standard of floor singers and musicians ... guests once a month or so.

Also : The Nova Scotia (Bristol) - good variety of guests, and some
outstanding floor singers/players every week. Every Monday; and occasional Saturday guest nights as well.

This year I have also visited Folk in The Vale (1st Friday of the month) in North Dorset, and Mary English's monthly session in Bath;
all these places are within an hour or so's drive for me, and I'd recommend every one of them - they are all really welcoming to new visitors.

There's also of course the new monthly Bath Folk Club, but that's only happened once and I wasn't there. Good reports though.

Wot makes a great folk club? I guess the answers to that would be as varied as the answers to your real question, We are all looking thru oour own eyes after all.
For me, I love a good SAR, egletarianism must prevail here though.
But then I enjoy those crazy songwriter typs, too, with their depth & modern ways! (!)
Still ... I LOVE great Harmonies in Traditional singing, and rousing chorusses... oh hell!
I like the one I like at the time, at this time, it's the Bluestone FC at Old Hartley, Near Whitley Bay in the Sunny North East of England. Now, if you's asked me 25 years ago....

If you are south of the Thames, the Croydon Folk Club on a Monday night is well worth a visit! There are plenty of good song sessions in East Anglia too. Grab a copy of "Mardles" and your road atlas!

Curtiss, collector/archivist/historian owner of Folk Arts rare records on Adams Avenue, who helped found the event, has one of the greatest collections of period recordings anywhere. A great local resource for roots music, folk, jazz, blues - you name it, dating back to the very early 1900's. If you happen to vacation here, it is well worth a visit.

How about The Bridge Folk Club in Newcastle upon Tyne, 50 years old this year? Great guests, residents, beer and students from the degree course.www.bridgefolkclub.co.uk
Or the Bluestone Folk club, Delaval Arms near Seaton Sluice on the northumberland coast, very cosy great singaround and good beers with one of the most scenic caravan sites right outside.
Or Cramlington Folk Club, or The Davy Lamp in Washington great guests very friendly. The North East is alive with great folk clubs, and some not so great, but best leave that for the other thread.

I have to back up all the good things said about Lewes, which is a phenomenon, but I don't think anyone has yet mentioned Walthamstow (Sunday evenings) which is well worth a visit. Haven't been to Folk in the Forest (Forest of Dean) for a while, but it used to be very good.

I would always favour the Bothy Folk Club in Southport. I have seen some amazing people there over the past 16 years or so, have always felt welcome and have received incredible support for my writing of lyrics and poems.

The well attended "Sing and Play" evening at "Elsie`s" last night demonstrated what a really great venue it is, perhaps the result of many years "knowhow". The ever smiling Askew Sisters, the booked artistes, gave a splendid performance of spot on songs and tunes to an attentive and fully appreciative audience. A complete "Elsie`s Band" with Iris Bishop ran a smooth operation and the raffle, nigh on a quarter of a pig, would you believe. Also to be seen among the excellent spots were Will Duke, John Morgan, Chris Wood and all for not much more than a couple of pints. Long may they continue, I shall certainly go again.

Well in the past year or so we have had very warm welcomes at Wheal Dream, Cornwall and Penicuik by Edinburgh and from a few inbetween so maybe the folk clubs in GB are still going strong. I like it when they talk to you and ask you if you want to sing even when they don't know you.
I like visiting clubs all over the country whenever we travel, I was particularly impressed by the superb folk mag up in the north west!

I haven't yet been to a bad one. You generally hear folk music at all of them, which is a good start.

The Loaded Dog in Sydney has the finest performer acoustics by general consent - X marks the spot where you appear to get 150 per cent natural foldback, a kind of acoustic dayglo effect. I like to sneak in early alone, and just sing in the space, aiming at the point where the back wall meets the high ceiling. The Loaded Dog also has a regular audience that roars the choruses back at you, and a very quietly wise Mudcatter host(ess).

I am privileged to have sung in a couple of those in UK mentioned above in despatches - Sharps and Herga. For those asking about the south-west, they might drop in on the Bude (Cornwall) folk club at the Falcon Inn? which has one of the loveliest rooms for a folk club, and a welcome to match.

I have spent a fine evening in gentle and talented company at the Raven? Folk Club at the Cross Keys in Chester.

But if you want to know where St Peter sends the most deserving souls, it is back down to the Good Intent in Rochester for the final, outrageous non-stop session of all time.

however there are more people singing pop songs in folk clubs than there were 50 years ago, generally they are floor singers . the only guest[40 years ago] i can recall who sang popsongs was andy caven

Although not a Folk Club and simply a pub,the Twa Tams in Perth could be included in the list as it has live music on most nights with a great range of genre and not just the usual loud pop/rock bands.
They have blues nights, jazz nights, and even the occasional swing night. Lots of Folkies attend the Open Mic on a Sunday afternoon. There is a Trading session on a Monday night.
Mid week between 12.00 and 3.00 there are quiet sets played by very talented singers and musicians.
This is a pub not to be missed.

Tom Walsh runs a very successful singers/tune night at the Thurlby Club Preston. It starts with 30 minutes of tune playing, then round the room singing until 11pm and then any survivors who still want to sing can jump in with a song when they like, until numbers dwindle. Mainly trad, but with some good chorus singing. Every Friday night. Give it a go.

You reminded me, Mad Jock. The Grove in Leeds is similar to the pub you mention. There is a folk club there but also other types of live music most nights. Great place. The only old building left surrounded by new development. It was my default go to when I worked in Leeds.

I'll put a word in for the Topic in Bradford at this point - the oldest continuously running folk club in the world. Sadly it has has had to move from it's previously superb venue Glyde House as it was closing down and is now in the Merchant's Bar in Little Germany. Now that I am in York I don't go but can testify to it's friendliness and eclectic mix of guests and floor singers

The Black Swan in York is also very good though I prefer the cabaret layout of the Topic to the more formal theatre style seating at the Black Swan - though the room is very small so sensible option to get a decent sized audience in. The old pub is beautiful but the beer range and prices are disappointing compared to other places in York

Some more from Scotland: Edinburgh, Leith, Newtongrange (Nitten), Falkirk, Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Almond Valley (West Calder), Stirling. Loads more that I haven't been to, but have heard are good, in the central belt, Fife, East Lothian and Aberdeenshire.
Then there are lots of good sessions: Edinburgh in various pubs, Linlithgow, Bo'ness,etc: that could merit a whole other thread.

Since you asked - Aberdeen Folk Club stopped booking professional guests 2 years ago. I only went once last year, to hear Jimmy Crowley, whom I had booked at the club in the mid-1980s. On that occasion, Jimmy was a duo with the late Chris Twomey [RIP]. Although it was their first appearance in Aberdeen, the publicity was done right and there was a near capacity audience of over 100. They were paid a professional fee according to the rates at the time, and I think even got an increase on a "percentage of the door takings basis".
Jimmy was over last year to play at the Portsoy Festival - [ the "Haal", not the boat festival ], and had a night off beforehand in Aberdeen. Although it was short notice he could have been given a gig in my opinion. He was invited to be a "special guest" at a "Singers & Musicians" session. They "passed the hat" round for him, which I thought was extremely insulting to a professional and long established touring musician. Jimmy's choice, of course, and it was actually a very good evening. Audience was less than 50.
Not the mark of a "great" folk club, IMHO, of course.

Some definitions required for this thread to be meaningful, I'd say.
a - the original poster was quite specific about what he / she meant as "Current" - "shall we say in the last year ?"
b - " the one(s) you have enjoyed " - ie you have had to have been there yourself, not "hearsay".
c - "Great" - you tell me how you define that.
d - "Folk Clubs" - I'll be generous and would say an event which advertises itself as "xxxxxxx Folk Club". "Club" implies meeting throughout the year at regular intervals, and with a membership. It's certainly not any of the poxy "open mic" sessions I've seen in pubs in Aberdeen.
S0 - where are the "Current Great Folk Clubs" in the UK in 2019/2020, and why ? Are there any ?

Jimmy Crowley: always good entertainment and thoroughly likeable guy: have had him at our local folk club a good few years ago, and since seen him at Whitby on a couple of more recent occasions. On one occasion he was booked to play at our club, but the club then had a crisis of suddenly and unexpectedly having no venue. Jimmy, kind soul, suggested that he would play in our local pub which was a pretty small space, if we would "pass the hat round": he was going to be over here anyway to do other gigs, and his generous spirit allowed us to have a really good night, and hopefully there was plenty in the hat for him. Maybe different circumstances from what happened in Aberdeen, but I don't think anyone felt insulted, and, as I said, it was his suggestion and choice, rather than cancel the whole thing.

Houston folk club , near Greenock, is a great little club, very rarely a guest artist, but local talent and a very friendly bunch. ( Every Thursday) Bose sound system.

I held back from posting here as the mixed sessions I and a number of mature folkies frequent are in Wakefield not strictly folk clubs ~

Fernandes Tap (top room) plenty of room for performers no mic and audience with good order first Sunday itm ~ from 1.30pm usually around 8 plus performers of high calibre melodeons, banjos (I know),concertinas and fiddles as well as the guitars very traditional material usual and similar

Polka Hop 3rd Sunday itm in the afternoon! 1pm ish on ~ Polka Hop renamed started to run their own guest spots ~ had the Hunch and one or two others so far ~ was already established as a long running folk venue under old name of Bull and Fair House ~ a little place but nigh all the main room utilised!

Wakefield Music Sessions. I would like to agree with Ray's post above...these 2 sessions are most excellent and I would love to see new participants....singers and instruments of all kinds plus the usual appreciative audience. The sessions are well attended although I have missed some of late due to ill health.There are friendly , talented people , so many real ales and a great atmosphere at both venues. The sessions could not be described as Folk Clubs ( whatever the definition may be ) but provide wonderful afternoons for so many. Regarding Traditions at the Tiger, Tamworth Road, Long Eaton, as mentioned in April 2008, we moved from The Tiger Inn in 2011, as the pub looked like it was closing (and it did a year later), a few yards up the street to The Stumble Inn, Tamworth Road, Long Eaton and subsequently changed the name to Tigerfolk.
We celebrated our 29th birthday on Sunday night with Jez Lowe as our guest.
