Bernadette, meanwhile a lot of free ABC software exists, as listed on http://abcnotation.com/. The problem with guitar tabs is that a given note can be played on more than one string, leading to a different tab representation. This is how I would proceed: download MuseScore and enter your ABC text there (- it uses a web service). Switch to "guitar tab" and let your guitarist adjust the positions and fingerings.

I think there are several dedicated, non-interactive programmes available, but your guitarist may not be happy with the results.

What sort of guitar music do you have in ABC?

You woult save my ass with that program! M

Dave,
Sorry if I hijacked your thread, and I do hope people will try your software.

I did think you needed to give more information on what it could do, and on what hardware, which you have now done. I am glad to see that you now have a host for it.

The purpose of this thread was to offer a free utility for guitar or mandolin players.

The location of my totally free utility is described in my previous entry.

The thread was not meant to be an advertisment for Pavane's HARMONY software no matter how good it is.

If anyone uses my software all I ask is that they give some feedback. If anyone has further ideas for the software I would be pleased to hear from them.

Hi again.

My program ABCtoTAB only works with windows.
Multiple simultaneous notes work.
If chords are included in the ABC notation they also get printed.

If an ABC line is too long to be processed and printed the program truncates the line and displays a warning dialogue box.

The ABC notation shown on the lower left of the main page can be edited to change lines or notes. If you want to save the modified ABC text select all the ABC text shown in the lower left text box -COPY it to the clipboard - then open NOTEPAD and PASTE the modifed text into a file - save the file as (your chosen name).ABC file.

I have set up three pages here

On page three there is a hyperlink to a zipfile holding the ABCtoTAB.EXE file and a ZIP file holding an ABC file. The first 3 ABC tunes will give a good idea of what gets printed.

Please give any feedback - good or bad!

Enjoy,
DaveP

Thanks, astro

Don't forget that my program HARMONY can also convert abc files (and MIDI files) to dots, and dots to tabs. Multiple voices too, for a full score, not just melody line.

For WINDOWS only though.

Get it from my site

I would definitely be interested in this. Recently for teaching I've been using a programme that converts ABC files to standard notation (the 'dots') and have found this very useful, but only where the student is comfortable with reading dots.

A lot of people interested in folk music aren't necessarily that good when it comes to dots, and tab is very useful for them. A programme that converts to tab is an excellent idea. Thanks very much Dave P. Where can I get hold of a copy?

You will also need to say what the hardware and software requirements are.
PC/MAC, WINDOWS, LINUX, etc

Does it do just melody line or complete tab with simultaneous notes?

Hi,

If anyone is looking for a free EXE program
to convert ABC into TAB for GUITAR or MANDOLIN please indicate interest in this post.

I wrote the software for my own use.
The SW is available 'as is'. If there is a location
on Mudcatt I could upload it to, I would for
anyone to download.

The only problem I know of is one of line length.
Long ABC lines need to have carriage returns included
to allow the conversion to printable form to work correctly, otherwise it truncates them.

Dave P
