This month's session will be happening at the Press Room, Portsmouth NH, this Saturday, 19 April from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Sorry to be late with the posting, but with an intense push at work and tax weekend, time has been tight.

Hope to see all the regulars, irregulars, and new voices as well -- Tom

Not this time, my daughter has her confirmation at 5:00 the same day, the only one in the family with any sense or religon, so it's her day.

I'm planning to be there but I know that Joanne will be at a concertina workshop with Ian Robb and Peter is off doing something else. It could be a smaller group than usual but that just means we get to try more songs individually.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, off in the wilds of Essex

It's looking like a good lineup for this afternoon. Non-Mudcatters coming include Bill and Gina Dunlap, Jeff Warner, Barbara Benn, Bruce MacIntyre, Emery Hutchins and a few others who were at last night's trad session. Don't be distracted by the beautiful weather; it's a grand day for beer and songs - Tom

I'll be there, but I'm not sure what shape I'll be in or how long I'll last. Woke up with a full blown migraine. Stomach has moved out of panic mode and headache is down several notches from kill-me-now to a who-sandpapered-my-meninges. I had the window open last night and I think the migraine fairies snuck in, the bastards.

It does look as if there will be an interesting turnout.

Now as I was a-walking round Portsmouth town,
Feeling cold and glum,
The Press Room was close at hand
So I steps in for some rum;
I says to the landlord, "A glass of your best,"
And he turns to me with a smile,
"I'll pour you a glass of old Port Royal,
Won't you sit by the fire awhile?"

Well, things seemed to just get better and better, about 20 folks showed up, most of whom led songs. Because it was a somewhat smaller turnout we each got more time to respond to one another, without the stress of wondering if one shouldn't wait until someone else who hadn't sung recently got chance to raise a song.

Bill and Gina Dunlap did make it and led some fine songs. Rich Gato was there with concertina and his custom built metal-stringed uke, haven't seen him in months. There was Barry, Mark, Emery, Peter, Dave (who was only there briefly and didn't lead a song), Bruce, Garde, Jeri, Jeff & Barbara, and Tom & Linn. One new face was Alison from Rockland, who made an even longer run than I did, and there were two other women who led songs whose names escape me. We were short on some of the Gloucester regulars but we certainly had a good time.

I've never heard so much "noise" bleeding in from the evening band getting set-up in the upstairs room. That was a little distracting. The kitchen crew seemed really supportive this time around. Barry has been very good about drawing them out and asking them what favorite songs they would like to hear. "London Julie" seems to win, hands down!

I tried a few newer songs such as "Auckland to the Bluff" by Rudy Sunde from the Maritime Crew of New Zealand and "Pierhead Chorus" by John Masefield. Then I sang some of my regular songs such as "West Indies Blues" (the chorus and back-up was just great) and "The Outside Track" by the Australian poet Henry Lawson.

Maybe Linn can do a better job of filling in who else sang what.

Looking forward to the next one in May!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Rich Gaito had his "travel guitar" with him -- uke size, but strung like a tenor guitar. Susan Young was there for one song, Pete Hale whose parents were there listening, too. Let's see, who else -- Dave Hallowell for a couple minutes (did he sing anything?), Bruce MacIntyre from about mid-session til the end, and, of course, Barbara Benn and Jeff Warner later in the session. Jeri was there early, but her migraine emerged again.

Gotta go -- my sister just called.

Linn

What did I sing?

Let's see...Joan Sprung's "Harbors of Home" -- I think I need to sing that more often. Richard Johnson's "Plum Island National Anthem" (the Plum Island off Newburyport, MA), Mary Garvey's "Cannery Shed" (requested by the cook, but I was already planning to sing it next), and...and...(sorry, can't remember...then again, maybe I didn't sing anything else. I dunno.)

Linn-

I think you also led "Nine Times a Night."

"Harbors of Home" is a really nice song.

Charley Noble
