Subject: BS: I got my permanent green card, at last!
From: jacqui.c
Date: 16 Apr 08 - 02:43 PM

I received a letter today from the Department of Homeland Security, confirming that I am now a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States. One big sigh of relief that that is all sorted.

The next thing is citizenship, but it seems I'll have to wait until 2010 for that.

Many thanks to all those who helped me put the info together to persuade the DHS that our marriage was the genuine article.

Congratulations! To Kendall too, I guess. I mean, now he can't just send you back, right?

A big "whew!" of relief and heartiest congratulations, Jacqui -- pleased as punch for you. I only wish I could drop by and bring you a big bottle of the Napa Valley Sparkling (we dare not call it champagne, if we're drinking the California product) myself.

Bottoms up --

Being, Maeve, BEING.

It's not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold...
or something much more colorful like that.

It's not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ord'nary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
or stars in the sky.

But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean, or important like a mountain,
or tall like a tree.

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.

I hear ya man! My FBI check took a very very long time. If Carol's dad had not been on the campaign of his congress man we still might be waiting.

It is a really scary feeling to be on the wrong side of the CIS even if it is through no fault of your own.

We mailed in the 'evidence'. I think I ended up sending in about 60 photos, each with its own caption - it must have been like the times that you HAVE to look at someone else's holiday pics for whoever had to go through them.

I actually put everything together in a folder, lots of paperwork to show that we own cars and a house together, and lots of explanations why we don't have joint accounts, joint utility bills etc. It obviously did the trick as we didn't even have to go for interview.

I gave a lot of thought about this, and typed up a real clever contribution to this thread, but this new keyboard I have is smaller than the old one, and for some reason, I keep hitting the "control" key by accident and it erases whatever I wrote. And I'm to lazy to retype what I had, so I'll just say congratulations and leave it at that.

Possibly keeping anyone in the cellar, senior or otherwise, constitutes a felony?

Great job Jacqui-- I have had my green card for more years than I care to remember (well over 30) but I still won't take citizenship.

I remember being interviewed to come in -- two of the TRUE questions were:

Is your intent in coming to the US to engage in prostitution - answer yes or no
Is your intent in coming to the US to engage in illegal drug trafficking - answer yes or no? Well, no to both -- I did intend to do some drug trafficking but planned to keep it strictly legal. I ASK you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats "Jackie" (hehehe, I know you won't change it now but maybe I'll just call you "Miss Slick" from now on).

You mean you weren't one of US all this time, OH my!
You talk just as funny as them thar other folks from Maine talk, I
never knew you wasn't one of them. Gosh, I think you pulled a fast one on me.

Deb, if they offered the same health care plan here as you have as a Brit, would you then seek citizenship?
Cause I'm thinking of going over there & with my funny accent trying to pass myself off as a Yorhshireman, I can't afford to be a US citizen any longer, it's killing me.

Kendall, & I thought you were just your average bear, you're looking more like the sly fox licking his lips & chopping his chops, I bet you're sitting in the cellar with "Jackie" with a shit eating grin on your face & a gleaming eye tooth.

BTW, that guy from the NSA (No Shit Asshole) or whatever he was, that was rquesting all that info on you guys. Well, he was squealing Oink, Oink & crying some thing about "Uncle" when I left him. No, don't thank me, what are friends for?

Contgrats to you both

Barry

You're doing better than poor Wakana. She's been waiting for it since we applied for the damn thing last May! We finally got our congressional delegate to ask about it and they told her they'd kept getting it back. The idiots were mailing it to our physical address, not our post office box. They told her they'd mail it to our mailing address and she told us they would do that.

Yesterday we got an envelope from them. Yippee! I thought. When we opened it we found a request for more evidence of our marriage! I was so pissed I could hardly talk.

In 37 days we can celebrate the first anniversary of our request.

Liz - the card is actually pink, not green. Not sure why, maybe the colour was picked by a 'sensitive' designer. :0)

Brett - I'm glad that I applied from inside the USA. I think if I had tried to get this while in the UK I might still be waiting too! By the way, I think I may have some photos of you and Wakana together if you want to use them with your application - I think that may have helped with ours - they just get too fed up looking at the pictures and grant the application!

And we'd be very pleased to have another vote added on the people's side of the issues.

But that curmudgeon you're married to will explain, I'm sure, that you'll probably never be considered the most exclusive kind of Yankee. (Outside of the US, everyone in the US is a Yankee. Inside the US in general, Northerners are Yankees -- since the American Civil War. In the northern part of the US, only those from Maine, New Hampshire and possibly Vermont are considered Yankees.)

I've been living in New England (and actually mostly in New Hampshire, less years in Maine) since January of 1970 -- and Kendall has said I'm not a Yankee. (But he's willing to associate with me anyway, I guess.) Tom, on the other hand, has repeatedly said I was born a Yankee despite being born in Michigan and spending 19 of the first 20 years of my life in Wisconsin.

It's sort of like the woman who was born in Kittery, Maine, and when she passed away in her 90s, her obituary stated all the wonderful philanthropic things she'd done, but bemoaned the fact that she wasn't a native -- she been CONCEIVED in Massachusetts.

Hugs, Jacqui, and congratulations on convincing Homeland Security of the genuineness of your marriage to Kendall. You are BOTH the Real Thing!!!

Linn

So.....a green card is pink (to confuse counterfeiters?) and a black box is orange.....
and I always LOVE being asked about my history of moral turpitude (whatever the hell that is) on the visa waiver form as I bounce down the coast of Nova Scotia. Even better, they make you fill the form in bouncing about on the jet stream (they must think everyone from the UK has Parkinsons or something, judging by the writing)and glibly instruct you to ask if you need a question clarified! Ask whom? And if they tell me what Moral Turpitude is, and I have a history of it, it's too flaming late to get off and go home!

Anyway congrats mi'duck.

You should see the form you have to fill out to buy a gun!

"Are you a user of illegal drugs?"
"Do you advocate violent overthrow of the US Government?"
"Are you a convicted felon?"
"Are you under a court order that would prohibit you from owning a gun?

Like, if the answer to any of these was "YES!" I'd answer truthfully? Even the "instant check" can fail....

But that's the neat thing now, Jacqui -- you can buy a gun for yourself! His and her .38s under the pillow.... Romance in bloom....

Rap - I think I'll leave the guns to the Cap'n. He's a lot more qualified in that area. As a Brit guns were the exception, rather than the rule and I had very rarely seen one up close until I came to Maine. As a retired law officer Kendall has much more experience with firearms and that's the way I prefer it to be.

Mind you, there are times when I could use one............. :0)

I am doomed to get all my information that way.   One time a friend of mine dropped out of touch for six months and when I finally trackd her down she'd become a belly dancer and a Scout troop mother. Go figger!! Another time, someone I thought was firmly planted in one country snuck away and planted themselves thousands of miles away, and I finally learned about it three months later. I can't get no respeck, an' that's a fack.

So now you can show them how to sing that National Anthem properly.

And you'll still be a dual citizen, with the right to live back here (or pretty well anywhere in Europe for that matter), even when you get to be a US citizen. Best of both worlds.

But mind the spelling...

I could be wrong, but I think the UK government sees it differently. They've got no problem with dual citizenship. Or more. My brother was at the same time an Argentine citizen, an Irish citizen and a British citizen.

I believe giving up British citizenship can be done, but it's quite complicated. Just saying you did in the course of applying for Amer4ican citizenship, if that's required, wouldn't count.

I'm sure the UK government does see it differently. But I know the US government would require her to give up UK citizenship if she were to become a US citizen. It would also make it extremely difficult should she ever decide to return to the UK permanently.

It indeed used to be the case in the US that you couldn't hold dual citizenship (except in certain cases if you had dual citizenship from birth or childhood, in which case some Supreme Court rulings -- Perkins v. Elg (1939), Mandoli v. Acheson (1952), and Kawakita v. U.S. (1952) -- permitted you to keep both). However, most of the laws forbidding dual citizenship were struck down by the US Supreme Court in two cases: a 1967 decision, Afroyim v. Rusk, as well as a second ruling in 1980, Vance v. Terrazas.

Rules against dual citizenship still apply to some extent -- at least in theory -- to people who wish to become US citizens via naturalization. The Supreme Court chose to leave in place the requirement that new citizens must renounce their old citizenship during US naturalization. However, in practice, the State Department is no longer doing anything in the vast majority of situations where a new citizen's "old country" refuses to recognize the US renunciation and continues to consider the person's original citizenship to be in effect.

The official US State Department policy on dual citizenship today is that the United States does not favor it as a matter of policy because of various problems they feel it may cause, but the existence of dual citizenship is recognized (i.e., accepted) as a fact of life. That is, if you ask them if you ought to become a dual citizen, they will recommend against doing it; but if you tell them you are a dual citizen, they'll almost always say it's OK.

The problem arises when the a US citizen accepts citizenship in a country that requires them to give up US citizenship. For example, Ireland has no such requirement and so those who fulfill requirements for Irish citizenship but are born citizens of the US can hold citizenship in both Ireland and the US.

US law, on the other hand, requires naturalized citizens to renounce their previous citizenship.

Just another benefit of the decision to be born a US citizen....

I had a teacher at secondary school, who cooked on a Calor gas stove (Calor gas is the butane or propane in cylinders that you hook up to your cooker, just in case I am talking a foreign language)and when she needed a supply delivered, she had to complete an order form which asked for special delivery instructions.
One time she wrote "apply to local convent for instructions" and another time "pipe under front door and turn on" . On neither occasion was any attention paid to her instructions, so she advised us teenagers that most official form replies were most likely to be ignored. Every time I do that damned visa waiver form I think of her, and think "dare I?"

Re; COLOR - the green card used to be blue before it was pink! (I've been here a long time). My understanding of the UK / US citizenship is that the US does not allow you to hold any other citizenship at all so officially you would have to renounce your other citizenship. This is what has kept me as a British citizen all these years -- I can't say the 'I renounce' word.....

The Brits don't care -- you can have 10 citizenships for all they care. I retain mine partly because I have a house there and one day will live there half the year -- partly because I came in British and I'm going out British. Regarding the medical care Barry -- I know this is hard to take in - but in the UK if you are sick -- THEY TAKE CARE OF YOU REGARDLESS OF CITIZENSHIP.....!!! (Deep breath - don't over react!)...I know it is a strange concept and you will need to wrestle with it but there it is.....

What if God - or Buddha -r karma - or whomever - came and got me and when I needed that citizenship andI had somehow put it at risk......I believe in cosmic 'what goes around, comes around.....' -- just can't say the words 'I denounce my UK citizenship.....just can't...

A lot of Americans consider just about any British accent to be posh (and don't really have the experience to differentiate anyway) -- and a woman with a British accent can charge a premium as a receptionist -- or sales, for that matter, from companies trying to convey a prestigious standing.

A graphic artist friend from Kent with Titian hair and a Pre-Raphaelite face found her accent alone could usually get her a decent job even when the printing industry was in a slump. (Alas, I think she's planning on moving to New Zealand now that her divorce is final.)

Batty, I agree but only up to a point. I don't find the Cockney accent to be posh at all either in a man or a woman.

Odd thing about accents, I get a kick out of hearing a real Maine accent when spoken by a working man, but in a woman it's an instant "Hard off".

OK, here goes:

Kendall and the Kitchen

Captain Kendall was a lonely man
In the Autumn of his years.
But then one day, he got tired of being lonely
So he went way off to the east
And when he came back
He had a wife with him.
She was strange you know
(and bossy as all get out)
People liked her.

She was good for Kendall
And she kept him busy
And winter come to summer
They were happy.

Kendall had a kitchen then
(an old kitchen)
I think it had a lug sail in it
(Among other things)
He'd go off to garage sales three four days at a time
Looking for parts for it.

Oh his wife was sad then.
She never liked to see him go.
She'd go down and call him:

Blimey Blimey Blimey
That kitchen's a bloody tip
I need a sink, I need a loo
And your dickey shoulder's sure to rip.

He said that he could hear her twenty miles away.
And when he heard her, he go to Erlon's
And hide for a while.
Jacqui'd wander 'round the yard sales.

She was a Limey you know
Everybody knew it even Kendall
He knew it
But no one would say it to his face.

Then one day in that year's autumn
He got it into his head to renovate the kitchen
An inch at a time.

But she says "No. Please ! Not the kitchen!
I've gotten used to running water and electricity!"

"Kendall Kendall Kendall
Leave the kitchen be
Water and electrics don't mix
And oh but I do fear for thee."

But Kendall's not afraid of a project
He fixed a door once
He puts his keys in his pocket
And sets off for Ace.
Jacqui heads for the Goodwill shop.

He heads straight for Scarborough.
With specs for a screw in his pocket.
Life is good.

Kendall reads the writing on the packages.
He checks the prices and quality.
"This ten cent screw will do nicely
Waste not, want not"
And he heads for home.

But Kendall reads it wrong this time
The screw is too small; it doesn't fit.
A cloud comes 'round him.

Kendall says "You son of a whore!
Son of a bitch goddammit!
And his wife was sad then.

He throws the screwdriver down
And heads away to the north this time
"I'll find me the right screw
Or die trying."

But the kitchen is watching.
The kitchen loosens its couplings
It resets its circuits
And waits patiently for his return

Finally Kendall comes back
With a great big screw.
He tries to force it in
But the jobs too tough for him.
He pulls the screw out and his mind goes a drifting.

His book on kitchen renovations isn't far away.

Kendall Kendall Kendall
Not that bloody book
Water and electrics don't mix
I fear I'll never again cook

But Kendall's mind goes a drifting
And by and by he has a plan
Jacqui sighs and heads for the Salvation Army Shop.

Kendall says "OK"
He takes his hammer from his tool chest
And starts to swing it over his head.

But OH the kitchen is watching.
It makes the lights short out
And the washer leak.

The kitchen says "Listen. I've got something to tell you.
Kendall, hammering "I don't want to hear it"

But the kitchen protests. Makes the dishwasher stick.
Makes it hard for him to get it out.
Kendall knows he isn't getting anywhere.
He puts the hammer away.
And heads for the sledgehammer.

Kendall says "OK. Now I've got something to show you.
He batters the counter into splinters.
Soaps up the floor to make a slide
And slips the dishwasher out easily.

The kitchen says "What are you doing?"
Kendall says "Keep watching"

He rips the sink out now
Hauls it away out to the trash pile.
The dishwasher follows.
Then the flooring.
But oh the kitchen is watching.
It overloads the circuits.
Kendall can't see what he is doing now.

The kitchen says "You're screwed now.
No water; no kitchen;
Can't even take a piss.

Kendall says:
"I'm not afraid of water.
I'll use a Mason jar.
It will work again. Then I'll rip out the wall unit."

The kitchen says "I'll drop it on you!"
Kendall says "You drop it on me
And no one will turn the electrics back on.
Then Jacqui will see to you.

The kitchen says "You may be smarter
But I'm craftier. You watch.
And the kitchen starts to disintegrate.

Finally there's too much mess.
Kendall says "I can't do it any more"
Jacqui says "You bloody Yank. I want my kitchen back!"

Kendall picks the sledgehammer up
And his mind goes a drifting.
Jacqui wisely heads out for a church rummage sale.

Kendall sets a new dishwasher in place.
He paints the walls and lays a floor.
He installs a sink and a new fridge.

and washes up.
Clean kitchen; clean laundry.
The wife will be pleased.

But the kitchen shrugs and sends all his work a'reeling.
The sink leaks and washing machine overflows.
The tiles float off the floor and make the footing dangerous.
Kendall doesn't know what to do                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              The water shorts the fridge.
Kendall falls ass over teakettle and lands in the doorway.
Kendall dying and the kitchen grins.

Kendall Kendall Kendall
Stay right where you lay
You're probably in shock
I'll get a Doc
We'll have to eat at the buffet.

So Kendall lays on the wet floor
And tries not to think of electrocution.
And he dreamed of her then.
He heard a great howling from the door
And he lifted his head.
He dreamed Jacqui was coming to him then.
As through the smoking kitchen she came
Hauling the cowering dog she came
And sympathizing to his arms.

In the morning they found him.
Asleep, with a bandage around his burned hand.
And there was a Brit lying on him there.
Like a mother protecting her child from falling debris.
And on the Brit was a big yellow dog.

Enjoy.

I dunno, I was there when Mary first presented it (and had no knowledge of Peter Kagan and the Wind), and it was a riot. But yes, better after having heard the original Peter Kagan and the Wind. And hearing Gordon do it was fantastic, but Mary's original presentation sticks with me...

I can certainly believe that Mary's original rendition was brilliant, but to hear Himself with read it with the laughter bubbling up in him and there's the clever author Mary shining like a child at her first Christmas and Kendall and his much-loved Jacqui laughing themselves breathless...

Nothing could beat that for me.

I have to admit when I heard that Gordon himself performed my minor epic at a gathering, I was gobsmacked. Now if we can just get him to write some music for it.

This piece is just a spectacularly wonderful creation.   It could stand on its own--but is even funnier, as many have noted, if you've heard "Peter Kagan".

It seems to gently spoof both the seriousness of the original and the situation described--in the best tradition of the mock epic. And there's not a mean bone in the parodist's body.

Wasn't it at a Getaway workshop that Gordon Bok himself did a rendition?

My reward for this is a picture of the Captain himself standing in his newly decorated kitchen wearing his Grumpy T-shirt while Seamus looks up adoringly. It is titled Captain Kendall and the Kitchen. LOL
