Subject: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 16 Apr 08 - 06:07 PM There are several threads on this subject because the date was previously in the title. Avoiding the date may help this be a more durable thread. It's near the end of the school year here, a few more weeks and we'll be through finals and graduation. Soon after that it's time for the Texas Scottish Festival. I checked the web site and the dates are up, but the schedules are still from last year. June 6, 7, and 8, 2008 at the usual place, Maverick Stadium at the University of Texas at Arlington. Seven weeks away, so plans must be about set. Who from our Mudcat Clan is going to appear in some form or other at the Texas Scottish Festival? SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 16 Apr 08 - 07:55 PM Well, my wife and I are planning on going as it is about the only way we get to hear our good friends, Smithfield Fair - one of my favorite groups ever. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 16 Apr 08 - 09:30 PM Where are you travelling from, or do you live in the Metroplex? |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 16 Apr 08 - 11:07 PM I'll be there! I'm dragging a guest player or two along - and hope to catch up with old friends in the GD Texas heat!!! ... wouldn't miss it! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 16 Apr 08 - 11:27 PM All things considered, I think I prefer the heat to the quagmire we had last year. It smelled like a composting barnyard and the mud was a challenge everywhere. And that's saying a lot, coming from someone who is native to the soggy Pacific Northwest! SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 17 Apr 08 - 11:35 PM Michelle and I volunteered to work the SCMA booth so we will both be there this year. No detailed plans yet, but it's still couple months until the festival. I've been driving around listening to the "Art on the radio" CD you gave me the last time we were in Arlington. It's still fun to listen to. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 26 Apr 08 - 12:00 AM "Art on the radio" ?? Is that Art Thieme? I have a few Art Thieme CDs and I enjoy them on my long drives. It was a bit soggy last year, with rains before the festival and storms on Sunday before the gates opened ... but my nose is deaf (one too many breaks from too much park league basketball) so I never got wind of the composting quagmire! I am hoping to see a schedule soon. I've been asked to do a pair of workshops again ... |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 26 Apr 08 - 02:19 AM The very same Art Theime - a recording of a radio show with interviews and singing from 1980 that Maggie gave me the last time we were in Arlington. I've also got a copy of The Older I Get, The Better I Was that lives in the truck. Good stuff. - Phil |

Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 30 May 08 - 09:36 AM I see Jed Marum and Friends on the schedule for Saturday night. What's the deal with that? - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 30 May 08 - 10:03 AM It took several tries to find that schedule, buried as it was. Entertainment schedule SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 01 Jun 08 - 06:42 PM This is one of those festivals with a lot of on-stage mixing of musicians. That "Jed Marum and Friends" on the schedule for Saturday night is a set I have been encouraged to gather several players to join me. In truth I have a few guests for other sets too. I am looking forward to the weekend. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Jun 08 - 01:25 PM Looks like this will be a hot one instead of a wet one, though knock wood, it isn't forecast as a triple-digit weekend. SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 02 Jun 08 - 03:28 PM Heat's OK - there's plenty of shade ... rain keep people home! see ya! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 03 Jun 08 - 12:47 AM It is starting warm up nicely, isn't it. The Friday lineup looks great so, day job and yard work willing, we are going to head to Arlington on Friday and spend the weekend. Saturday and Sunday could involve some tough choices – it doesn't look like there is enough time to hear everyone. Will we see you out there, Maggie? - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Jun 08 - 01:08 AM Most likely, at least for one day. Maybe I can talk my son into going this year. SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 03 Jun 08 - 11:20 PM Cool, I hope to see both you and your son there. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 04 Jun 08 - 11:05 PM My friend Don Gabbert from Lubbock will join me on Sat night at 7 for a song and story swap ... my son Jaime will be playing with me all weekend and Hugh Morrison will join us for some of several sets, including probably a two hour set on Sunday afternoon. Weekend predictions, and past experience say it'll be hot as hell! Doesn't look like rain'll be a factor - but possible T-storms for Friday. No worries! See ya there! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Jun 08 - 01:49 PM We have a possible different weather ingredient this year--wind! Whoosh, but you'll all be bouncing across the stadium turf if this keeps up! SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 05 Jun 08 - 02:42 PM Wind could be a bit of a problem ... but at least it'll help keep us cool! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: GUEST,Strange silent board reader Date: 05 Jun 08 - 04:45 PM Wind would be lovely. Hell, rain would be lovely. Something to break up the insufferable heat. (She says without a thought of staying home) |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 05 Jun 08 - 10:09 PM Yup, you could miss a lot of music, and a lot of life, waiting for perfect weather. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 05 Jun 08 - 10:48 PM LOL could be a perfect weekend, even with imperfect weather! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 Jun 08 - 12:32 PM Not bad out today. I'm not sure when I'll head over, probably this evening. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 11 Jun 08 - 09:03 AM And a splendid time was had by all, weather notwithstanding. It was hard to eat lunch while be pelted by the fries/chips blown off of fellow diner's plates, but being surrounded by hundreds of people in kilts in the same wind had its charms. I spent the weekend learning how to work a brand new camera. Here are some snapshots from the festival. The music was great as usual. Lots of our favorite acts and some new favorites; the Quebe Sisters Band and Don Gabbert. Tejas Go Bragh! - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Jun 08 - 09:27 AM I was really torn, should I go or not, but in the end the pocketbook dictated I stay close to home and work on stuff here. The whole time I was struggling with that new flower bed I knew you would be enjoying yourselves in the shade of those tents and good temperatures. Great photos Phil--and I love that minature horse! I wonder if it would play nicely with the dogs? ;-) SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 11 Jun 08 - 08:03 PM Good eye, some folks at the festival called it a pony and they were firmly corrected. The horse was happy walking on the grass or on the pavement, but was spooked by the edge between the grass and sidewalk. He was trying to jump over the edge when the picture was taken. Sorry we missed you. We looked for you. The music under those tents was grand and we had a great time. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: GUEST,The Quebe Sisters Band Date: 11 Jun 08 - 11:46 PM We all had a great time at our first Scottish Festival this weekend -so many nice folks, great audiences, fantastic music and lots of root beer! Joey had alot of fun jamming with the great Scottish fiddlers - something he doesnt get to do too often here in Burleson, Texas! We are glad we discovered the event and are hooked! |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 12 Jun 08 - 09:09 AM Juey sure looked like he was having fun. The song swaps and jams at the end of the day are always a treat. Hope to see ya'll there next year. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: SouthernCelt Date: 12 Jun 08 - 10:58 AM Hey, Jed has posted a link in his blog on MySpace to a YouTube video of his rendition of "Wild Mountain Thyme" with a still photo slide show of pix from the festival as the video. Non-Texans need to check this out if for nothing more than seeing the Texas Scots with cowboy hat and boots wearing KILTS! Here's the YouTube link: Wild Mountain Thyme SC |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: GUEST Date: 12 Jun 08 - 12:09 PM If there is any wisdom at all in "know thy roots", then Joey jamming with his roots was an act of frigging genius |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 12 Jun 08 - 03:34 PM They posted another vid at the TSF Youtube page. This one is a Brian McNeill video from an earlier album but most of the performance pics are from the last couple of years at TSF - and most taken by Uncle Phil. I don't know who else gave the pics. Sunday on the Jar! The video of my song uses a track Travis Ener recorded live, and presumably cleaned up at his studio. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 12 Jun 08 - 03:37 PM I think one of the Quebe Sisters is in the McNeill video. I know they asked me about the pics and it was I thought they should use. But - I know there are more videos coming. He said they were going to ask other performers for tracks and pics ... so maybe they're saving the Quebe and other '08 pics. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 12 Jun 08 - 04:09 PM I just watched the clip again and the Quebe Sisters are not in this one. Joey McKenzie is there, though playing with us at the closing show. Phil has a great picture of one of the girls I hope they use in their next video. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 12 Jun 08 - 11:47 PM I enjoyed both slide shows, but my favorite picture is still one of Brian from the photo contest that he was nice enough to sign for me. It's hanging over my desk. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 13 Jun 08 - 12:05 AM Which one is that?? Is that close up of his face and fiddle? |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 13 Jun 08 - 12:24 AM Nope, it was this one with the mandocello in front of the tent. The one you are thinking of was also in the contest. No prize winners though (sigh). - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 13 Jun 08 - 12:39 AM You just can't beat a picture of a pretty girl! The winner was a picture of Roberta Rast of the Kildares, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah - I love that Brian and mandocello pic! The one I was talking about must have come from elsewhere - I don't see it on your site for '07 or '08. If look closely at the SUNDAY ON THE JAR video, you might notice a marked similarity between this pic and the picture of Brian discovering the Almighty having a pint at the Angel Arms. |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 13 Jun 08 - 12:49 AM The picture of Roberta was last year's winner and is a great picture. This year the winner was a picture of a dude in a kilt, cowboy boots, and a ten-gallon hat - am irresistable image for a Scottish festival in Tejas but I liked the picture of Roberta better. Lots of pictures of cute kids in kilts this year, too. - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: JedMarum Date: 14 Jun 08 - 03:20 PM ... there are a bunch of videos appearing on Youtube from this year's festival. Cool! |

Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 31 May 09 - 10:50 PM Wow, the 2009 festival snuck up on us this year. Looks like a fine musical lineup, as usual. One of the TeeVee weather guessers is already predicting good weather for next weekend. We'll be there – anyone else going? - Phil Texas Scottish Festival & Highland Games, Maverick Stadium at the University of Texas at Arlington, between Dallas and Fort Worth. June 5 - 7 http://www.texasscottishfestival.com/music.htm |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 31 May 09 - 11:10 PM Thanks, Phil. I had the thought the other day that I needed to fly this thread and see who salutes. The new uber-expensive Dallas Cowboys stadium will open on the 6th and has a big event (George Strait concert with Reba McIntire and Julianne Hough at 5:30) the same day, and they will be parking cars for thousands of stadium employees and VIP guests on the UTA campus and shuttling them north to the stadium. There is parking at the stadium itself for the festival, and they get away with charging people to park there. I park at a friend's home nearby and walk over. I don't know if there is any advice to give except it might be a lot more crowded around campus this year, and there may be traffic jams in town. Be patient. SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 01 Jun 09 - 10:00 PM Thanks for the reminder. I guess we'd better take I-20 and skirt the south side of town instead of going through Dallas on I-30. Things have been real busy at work, and I've been spliting my time between work and jury duty so I'm really ready to kick back and enjoy a festival weekend. Now if I can just convince Michelle to do the yard work this week... - Phil |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Jun 09 - 01:13 PM There will be 5600 stadium staff cars and 3000 guests' cars parked at UTA on Saturday. That's a lot of parking and shuttle bus traffic. Many of those lots they'll use are on the south and east side of campus, so if you can avoid Collins and Cooper, I'd suggest going over to Bowen and driving north to Pioneer Parkway and head east. When you get to the light at Fielder (there are Kroger, ACE Restaurant supply and a large Baptist church at that intersection), turn north and then turn east again on Mitchell to get to the stadium. There is a city park on the left and an elementary school on the right at the light at the corner of Mitchell and Fielder. SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Jun 09 - 05:29 PM The long-range weather forecast for Friday through Sunday is mostly clear each day, with the high temperature ranging from 89 - 92. It has been worse. Let's hope the rain from today and predicted tomorrow doesn't turn the field into a quagmire again. Hot and Humid is something they do rather well in North Texas, but hot and dry is more comfortable. And around here, 90 isn't really that hot. I could live with 90 and dry. SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 03 Jun 09 - 09:49 AM I'm printing your out driving tips now, thanks. The Scottish Festival is all weekend and the other concert is just Saturday evening, so maybe it won't be too much of a nusience. We'll see. I'd hate to see folks miss the Men in Kilts Cartwheel Contest(1) because of traffic congestion. - Phil (1)stolen from Michael Price |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Jun 09 - 10:42 AM When you back up the time on something like this, with a concert that starts at 5:30, the staff will have to be in place a lot earlier in order to let in the audience. The 3000 VIP folks might arrive late afternoon, but the 5600 others will probably have to be in place way before hand. What I described is an easy route, not far out of your way. I've calculated it as the best way to entirely avoid the main part of campus. I often drive to work via this route because I sometimes park on a side street over there and take a campus shuttle to the library, I don't pay to park on campus. The Wetzel building on the front end of that lot houses the campus print shop where I spend a fair amount of time. Most days it is easy access, laid back parking. This weekend will be different. :-| SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Jun 09 - 06:57 PM Here is the schedule on a one-page printout. I see Jed Marum on it. He hasn't popped into this thread this year. There is someone or a group on here named Teribus. Is this the Mudcat member? SRS |
Subject: RE: Texas Scottish Festival @ UT Arlington From: Uncle Phil Date: 03 Jun 09 - 09:22 PM I don't think so, the Teribus on the Texas Scottish Festival program not a person, it's a trio with a drummie and two pipers -- one of them from down around Houston. I'm not sure about the other two. - Phil |
