Am I the first to proclaim it?

(Butt out Seamus you old fraud.)

It's out in the car so I can't quote the title perfectly, but it's Saling Ships and Sailing Men, I think, and it's GREAT! (Butt out Seamus you old fraud.)

The man and the voice just get better with age. (Butt out Seamus you old fraud.)

Gush, gush, gush......

OK everyone else, what do you have to say on this one? I'll add more tomorrow when I bring it back into the house.

Got mine a few days ago. It is the usual. That is to say it is a wonderful selection, great arrangements, stellar accompaniment by excellent musicians (how does one beat Billy McComiskey on Button Accordion, the man simply is among the best!!) and the subject matter is one I wondered why the wee lad from Norn Iron never tackled given the nature of that area.

Included among the cuts is Day of the Clipper, which Seamus does as a tribute to his musical Godfather, Mr. Tommy Makem (God be good to him). He also does a version of Little Jim which is a simply marvelous song written by Mike Campbell (Alaska Mike), continuing Seamus' habit of ripping off covering songs by Mudcatters ***laughing out loud***....whoa, little fella, get that bat away from my knees, ya think you're in the back alleys of Belfast???? I wuz just funnin'. The man, as always, gives you your monies worth, with 19 cuts on the CD. One of my very favorites already is his version of Báidín Fheidhlimidh. Songs like this done by native speakers, such as Seamus, remind me of listening to the old ones when I was a kid.

I give it an A+ and would urge all that love this type of music to pick it up. Great stuff.

All the best,

Mick

P.S. Before anyone says anything, the comment about Seamus recording songs of Mudcatters is purely a joke between friends. Any Mudcat songwriter that has a song recorded by the likes of our Seamus Kennedy feels pretty honored to have it so.

Sailing Ships and Sailing Men is indeed the title.

The CD is dedicated to the memory of the "late Godfather of Irish Music Tommy Makem."

The tracklist:

1. The Day of the Clipper
2. Paddy Lay Back
3. The Alabama
4. Little Jim
5. The Boys of Killybegs
6. The Calabar
7. South Australia
8. The Fireship
9. Báidín Fheidhlimidh
10. Roll the Old Chariot Along
11. The Sailor's Alphabet
12. The Irish Rover
13. Fiddlers Green
14. Sally Brown
15. The Mingulay Boat Song
16. The Mary Ellen Carter
17. The Trumpeter Hornpipe
18. Rolling Home to Old New England
19. The Sailor's Prayer

A mix of trad and soon-to-be trad, with Seamus's wonderful style (his name rhymnes with Shameless for good reason), and the touch of the Mudcat scattered throughout. I'm sure it will be up on Seamus' site and CDBaby soon, and it's a safe bet most of the songs will pop up in his set lists in the coming year.

This is a genre still new enough to Hardi and me that I'll leave the "knowledgable" comments to others. I only know I liked it, and that it fits in fine with the various pirate audiobooks we've been enjoying all year! :~)

Hi guys.

I'm just back from a hectic weekend: Saturday night in Lafayette, IN; Sunday night in Reno, NV; and Monday in Los Banos, CA.

Southwest misplaced my guitar and suitcase on the Reno leg, and I had to borrow one from a friend (thank you, Kevin Lyons!) to do the show.

Both items were delivered to my hotel after the show, and I had the guitar and case for the Los Banos gig.

Cdbaby has all the information and 75 copies of the new CD, so it should be up any day now, and I'll also be putting a link on my website.

Hey Art, I'm gonna be in Albuquerque on June 12th at the Zoo. Will I see you there?

Skarpi, the reason for the 19 songs is that for ideal sound reproduction, there's a time limit on most CDs. I had recorded 20, and had to drop one to get them all to fit. Plus Song For Ireland is already on my Smile and A Tear CD...

Kendall, thanks for the help with Rolling Home To Old New England.

I dedicated the CD to my musical hero, the late Tommy Makem, and I did 2 songs in his style. One of them he wrote - The Boys of Killybegs - and the other, The Day Of the Clipper, he and Liam Clancy made famous.
It was of course written by Steve Romanoff of Schooner Fare.

The last song on the CD is Tom Lewis' great Sailor's Prayer, and I'm glad to announce that Tom will be joining me in Harry Browne's in Annapolis, MD on Tuesday April 29th for an informal and unofficial CD launch.

Damn, I just spotted this thread. And, yes, damn, it's a fine CD. Nothing from this man is ever less than fine! Well, maybe "Volare," but that's not on this CD.

Seamus, congratulations! We'll listen to this one a lot. Now, here is a bit of an aside coincidence for you:

A song on your CD is Tom Lewis' song "The Sailor's Prayer" with the good chorus as follows...

Oh, Lord above send sown a dove
With beak as sharp as razors,
To cut the throats of them there blokes
That sells bad beer to sailors.

During the 22 years between about 1975 and 1997 I used a variation of that same verse in my version of bluegrass stars, Jim and Jesse's, good song called "There's Better Times A-Coming". I originally found the verse in Phil Foner's book AMERICAN LABOR SONGS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY (University Of Illinois Press)

Here it is:

May the Lord above send down a dove,
With WINGS as sharp as razors,
To cut the throats of the lousy bloats
That cuts the poor man's wages!

Granted, it was not a sea song---but it was a working man's yell for better wages and revenge against the bosses. I used the verse as thr first verse of the song. The song's chorus went:

Pick away on the old banjo,
Keep the guitar strumming,
Put more wather in the soup,
There's better times a-comin!.

The cow went dry the hens won't lay,
There's no place I can borrow,
I give the landlord all the news,
And there's better times a-comin'.

So pick away on the old banjo...

A fellow came by my house today,
He was hunting manual labor,
I told him I didn't know the guy,
He better go ask my neighbor.

There were more verses, but that's all that comes to me right now.

Seamus, I suspect this is the good old oral tradition rearing it's head once more!!!

Again, it's a fine new CD you have there. Sell a million.

Thanks, Art; I'll settle for selling enough to cover my recording expenses and maybe buy a used Rolls-Royce!

I have no idea where Tom got the chorus, but as you say, I've a feeling that it's the folk-process/oral tradition in action.

And he has come up with a damn fine song as a result.

Why can't the concept of a 19th century labor song be adapted for use in a song of the sea?

Or the Bard of Armagh for the Streets of Laredo?

Art, did you HAVE to write that? Have you HEARD what he does with backup instrumentation? Now he will probably put O'lare on the NEXT one, and dedicate it to you (blame it on you is more like it).

O'Lare, o, o...

No, I simply will not write the rest of what's in my thoughts (it's um, pungent.) What's the point, anyway, since the man will only top it?

Well, I have to agree with what Art said about "Volare." Art, what was that you said about "Volare"? It's the ultimate shower song - ans what's sung in the shower, should stay in the shower...
But Dean Martin would be proud of ya, Seamus.

I really like Sailing Ships and Sailing Men. It's a collection of a lot of my favorites, along with a few I didn't know. You do good work, Seamus. And besides that, it's a real kick to see you perform in person.

Joe, thank you .

As regards the 'Volare', I recorded that on my Party Pieces CD.

In the liner notes booklet I say:

The Irish love songs. All songs. Opera, hymns, country (and western), folk, bluegrass, blues, rock–and-roll. Songs in English, Irish, French, Italian, Latin, Spanish.
We're pretty catholic – with a small "c" - when it comes to our taste in songs.

We listen to, and sing everything.

In Ireland when we have a party or a gathering of family and friends, we like to entertain one another by singing, story-telling, recitations, or even an ould step or two of a dance.
Nearly everyone has a song, a story, a poem or bit-of-business for which they are known - their "party-piece" - and when a hooley breaks out, he or she will be called upon to perform said piece for the group.None of your standing around sipping cocktails, nibbling canapés, schmoozing and passing out business cards at our parties!

No, we sing our heads off, drink beer or stout and hoover up little sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

Encouragement is usually offered, followed by a respectful silence while the person does his or her bit, with a round of applause when it's over. Then someone else will be called on to do something, and so it goes round the room until nearly everyone has done a turn.
I have seen painfully shy people emerge from their cocoon to stand up and sing or recite – sometimes accompanied with full dramatic or comedic gestures – and then bask in the ensuing applause.

As we say at home, it's a great night's "craic" altogether.

This CD is a collection of songs which were (and some of which still are) the "party-pieces" of my family and friends. There's my mother's, my father's and even my own "party-piece' from when I was a teenager learning the guitar. I have included a few of my uncles' and aunts' favorites, too. And there are a couple which aren't "party-pieces"……yet.

If you don't have a "party-piece" of your own, have a listen to this CD and if you hear one or two you like, learn them, and become the hit of your next party.

That's how traditions get started, y'know.

'Volare' isn't precisely a 'folk-song' (oh no, here we go again!),
but it was a party-piece, hence its inclusion.

Seamus, everyone,
I was kidding around about Volare. I was being humorous---mentioning you doing Volare on that OTHER Party Pieces CD---not this new one--which I truly enjoy a lot. -------- That said, I never liked Volare by anyone. What the heck is a "blue pinto" anyhow? --- I know, it's a horse of a different color! Something like a "Strawberry Roan" maybe??
So, pardon me; I'm just stallion for time, I guess...

Art - no offense taken. I knew you were kidding.

But I do get asked by people who buy the CD "What the hell is 'Volare' doing on here?"

And I explain the "Party Piece' concept to them.

"Nel blu dipinto di blu" has nothing to do with a blue pinto or a silver with the speed of light, or anything equine for that matter.

And wasn't the Volare a GM vehicle back in the '70's as well?

"In the blue-tinted blue sky, I'm happy to stay aloft."

It's about love making a guy think he's flying.....or something.

OK, I admit-- I brain-farted Volare right out of my Party-Pieces memory bank.

Somehow I could hear Seamus doing it in my head when I posted above, but I thought I'd dreamed it up: his CDs don't come out often enough, so sometimes I run a new favorite song in my head through the mental Seamus-izer just for fun. In my head, he can sing anything.

Of course when I go see him perform, I often find that he can, WILL, and does sing just about anything. :~) Once I'm there I just run his instrument-playing through the Seamus-izer to add in the steel guitars and other weirdly perfect effects his CDs usually have. :~)

Who is Caryl on your CD? She has a great voice. Really rich in character and that is a nice touch for the backup singing role she played on your album. I love your 5 string banjo player too. Very nice package and artwork too.

As I put that Youtube clip together, I played the track over and over and I realized how lucky I was to get to work such pros as Paul, Eve and Brian - thanks for your kind words. I love the track too - and it's funny to me that 150+ years after she's passed I developed a real personal attachment to Kate Cumming, the Scottish immigrant who inspired the Chickahominy song. She talked with pride about her Scottish heritage and her appreciation for her Irish cousins - mentions some of the song and dance experiences from chance encounters among the war travels (with fellow Scottish or Irish immigrant Confederates). Lovely woman!

Wonderful story, Jed. And great backing musicians too.

The Caryl is Caryl P. Weiss. She's a an old (!) folkie from way back, and a seasoned shanty singer, who has performed with just about every well-known folk performer such as Doc Watson, Bill Staines, Dave Van Ronk and others.

Originally from Philly, I believe, she lived in Texas for many years, associated with the Kerrville Festival.

She currently resides here in Annapolis, MD.

Her shanty group is called The Liverpool Judies, and Caryl plays guitar, banjo and concertina expertly.

She does a great Beaumont Rag on her "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm" recording.

And I'm pleased no end that she's on my CD.

Seamus

"Sailing Ships and Sailing Men" was sitting on my desk last Thursday when I got back from a trip overseas. I put it on blaster for a spin and it revived my jet-lagged psyche at once. Very upbeat and a musically tight recording. The songs are old and new, and from here and there.

As observed above, it is reminiscent of the late Tommy Makem's work. If you loved him, pick this one up for sure.

Seamus-

Happy to hear that Caryl P. Weiss is alive and well in your fair city, and still belting out sea shanties. So The Liverpool Judies are still actively performing as well?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
