It's stunning to learn that others don't share our tastes. Then again, how did an entire generation embrace faux wood panelling, shag carpets and putting thick plastic on their furniture? Well, someone thought it was a great idea!

Hey, I like Bob Dylan's voice and kept him off this list because I could! Instead, I found the ten singers most likely to make you drive off the road.

Now that's a terrible fate. Not only are you stranded in some ditch, but you're stuck listening to one of these ten singers, who it would seem are singing that way just to mock you. Oh, the injustice.

Celine Dion: I know there are millions of people who would beg to disagree, but let's get real, people. She sings 15 notes where one would suffice and turns every song into an anthem for self-empowerment. It's like getting an hour of Oprah condensed into four minutes. She sings. It's time to start the lawnmower.

John Mayer: Young people are impressionable. I'm not sure where John Mayer learned his vocal craft. I hesitate to call it singing. It's more like whimpering. And for some reason, this has become a trend not stopping anytime soon. As you'll sadly learn as we go further down this list.

Conor Oberst: As the wunderkind who leads Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst was given a certain amount of leeway since he was a young teen when he started out and his precious singing--so sensitive and intimate you could hear the post-nasal drip--was mistaken as precocious. Well, he's in his 20s now and he still sounds like he's swimming back to the womb for protection from this hard, harsh world. Come on buddy, stand up straight and stop trying to imitate the Cure's Robert Smith. He got there first. And even he must know he sounds a little silly.

Lily Allen: Contrary to this column, I want to like fresh, young talent. I want to hear singers bring true commitment to their material. The first time I heard Lily Allen I thought it was quaint. Then it seemed every young female singer was determined to sing just like her, as if they're running out of air in their lungs and have to get back to the respirator before the next verse begins. Sure, she's bouncy and spunky. But if I might quote what Lou Grant once told Mary Tyler Moore: I HATE SPUNK.

Devendra Banhart / Tiny Tim: I'm not convinced they're not the same person. Tiny Tim was a novelty item singing with that stupid ukulele something about tiptoeing through the tulips. Anyone with any half sense would know it was novelty item that shouldn't be used as the basis for an entire recording career. And for thirty years, it wasn't, until freaky-folk dude Devendra Banhart showed up and started warbling in that unlistenable, untrained vibrato the kind of nonsensical lyrics that didn't sound all that great back when people were taking the kinds of drugs you're supposed to be on in order to enjoy it.

James Blunt: All this talk in the media about whether or not waterboarding is torture is moot. Forcing anyone to listen to "Beautiful" on repeat constitutes torture. You want my darkest, deepest secrets? This guy's quivering voice gets you my social security number, my mother's maiden name, my personal PIN and any random government secrets I'm currently harbouring.

Frankie Valli: Frankie Valli was a hero to some back in his day. I grant you this. He was consistent! He consistently sang in a voice designed to send dogs running for cover and perfect for breaking glass. "Rag Doll, " "Sherry," "Dawn," "Big Girls Don't Cry," the list is enormous. He very well could be tried as a war criminal. Who would object? Seriously? Who?

Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins): Yes, despite all his rage he's still just a rat in a cage. Unfortunately, that cage came with a microphone for him to transmit his Smashing Pumpkins hits to a helpless, hapless world at large. While Billy could orchestrate grand walls of guitar and write albums of endless tuneage, he insisted on singing it himself. Except this is not singing in any conventional sense, but rather the sound of a petulant, whiny child. This is what happens when parents don't tell their kids to shut up often enough. Children need to know you don't like them.

Scott Stapp (Creed): We could probably start laying the blame on Bono, Eddie Vedder, Jim Morrison and that guy from Blood, Sweat and Tears, but in the end it's Scott Stapp who epitomizes that macho bellow that sounds like a man who's gone overboard at the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet and has just received spiritual orders to let everyone know they're going to hell if they don't save themselves somehow. His spiritual torment becomes your problem. Thanks, pal.

Michael Bolton: OK, this was easy. C'mon, you knew Mr. Bolton should top the list. Who else can take a love song and turn it into a hernia? When a man loves a woman he doesn't do so by screaming in her ear--so why should it be acceptable for a man to sing a sensitive love song as if he's directing traffic for the hearing impaired? R&B classics deserve their place in musical history and should be protected from this man's desecration of all that is holy. It's only right. Let's make it a law.

The only one I have even heard of is Celine Dion...I'm here because this is vaguely (at least now) a FOLK music forum. Why ring in anyone from groups like "Smashing Pumpkins" at all?

(It's been quite awhile since I've registered this complaint....but this post hit me before I finished my coffee.)

I nominate - Windsor Knot! Listening to that insufferable twerp's offkey and insipid warbling is enough to drive anyone to murder or suicide within under five minutes. Musical drivel of the worst sort! No redeeming qualities whatsoever. Utter rubbish. Total bollocks. Has driven me off the road on more than one occasion. Give this one a wide berth. If you see a Windsor Knot CD, flush it down the loo at once, burn it or put it through the paper shredder.

Dylan
Neil Young
Mariah Carey
Neil Diamond, especially when he is singing about ET.
Tom Waits
Dolly Parton
Clint Eastwood
George Jones
Van Morrison singing through his nose.
Bruce Springsteen could read the phone book and sound anguished.

Anyone different enough to be interesting will be bound to irritate someone. Its all a matter of taste. If they have sold a million records, and all of these have. Someone likes them enough to pay to hear them.

Personally, I like the list, if only for the reason that I know that I'm not the only heretic who finds Conor Oberst's quivering vocal delivery excruciating. I tense up as soon as he starts "singing". I will never understand the appeal. But then, he's sold millions of albums and I've sold several.

Clint did a movie called 'Honky Tonk Man' awhile back.... kind of a semi-washed up country singer who gets on the comeback trail...
The same theme was used to varying degrees in 'Tender Mercies'..Robert Duvall and "Pure Country".. George Strait..

think I'll make my own movie... called "How Long Have I been Falling to Get This Far Down?"

I don't particularly like the objective of this thread. However, there is one famous, well-liked singer whose singing I find somewhat irritating. That being said, what pleases one person may displease the other, and this singer is very well liked by many. He is Bill Morrisey. There are a few others whose names escape me at the moment.

Good call with Bobby Goldsboro, Bobert.

Another few dreadful songs (bloody annoying)worth a mention are

I remember Elvis Presley, by Danny Mirror.

Mississippi, by Pussycat.

No charge, J.J. Barry.

Granddad, Clive Dunne.

Two little Boys, Rolph Harris.

Everything is Beautiful, Ray Stevens.

Ebony Eyes, Everly Brothers.

And there are a mountain of Country songs we could go into, someone is either dying and leaving fifteen children or a dog was gone walkabout. Not forgetting the wife who has fallen from grace.

If this is "Troll Spawn" it's a good one! You all looked!

In case any of you have forgotten:

#1, James Taylor!

Clint Eastwood, Billy Boy Shatner, Loren Greene, etc. do what might be called "parlando". Although I believe the term was meant to apply to someone who could really sing and when they came to the part so marked they spoke the word(s), possibly as an iteration of the previous word or as an interlude as in Jan and Dean's "Deadman's Curve"!

Yes:
Frankie Valli
Mariah Carrie
Tammy Whine-ette
Bob Wills (remember him?)
Michael Bolton
Pat Boone
Pat Boone's daughter
Me
The guy who sang "Swinging" (CW)

I'm sure a lot of the newer singers who were named were just as awful or more so but I haven't heard them and don't plan to in the near future. Have fun with this.

Lee Marvin? Or was he just sooo bad he was good? (Paint Your Wagon)

Clint Eastwood sings????

And of the original list, I only ever heard of Celine.

There is another very well known, well loved folk singer that I just can't stand to listen to, but I shall refrain. Voice is too 'little girlie' and nasal to suit me, but loads of people love that.

I think the singing of Jo Stafford was like a trip to heaven, but when she and her husband Paul Weston recorded as Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, it was truly and deliciously awful.

This YouTube clip isn't Darlene, but Jo's recording of Tim-tay-shun is classic.

A number of years back, I was sitting around a table with a small group of musicians, listening while a folksinger with a small local following ran through a list of people who were "crap"--at the end of it all, a bass player who'd been around said, "You know, those folks all have something in common".

"What's that?".

"They're all better than you."

Food for thought.

Nothing, but nothing, anywhere, ever, is as bad as Kate Bush.

Lilly Allen is totally unlistenable. She went to every expensive girls' public school (that's "private school", for those in the USA) in the UK and was expelled from all, so why does she have to affect Estuary English complete with glottal stops?

James Blount is pretty dreadful too.

Amy Winehouse I find short of merit (but I know I'm in a minority).

The Appleton sisters are piss-poor.

Dylan has to have one of the worst voices on the planet.

Johnny Cash is up there with him though

I hate Dolly Parton

I hate Tammy Wynette

Oh, and that male French song stylist whose name I forget with a voice somewhere between a husk and a croak with absolutely no concept of pitch - not Charles Aznavoice, a milion times worse than that...

But there are lots of strong competitors on Youtube!

Natalie Merchant is one who pushes me to the brink. The way she does that jumping-off -the-cliff voice fade thing at the end of every line. It's like she approaches the notes, decides she can't be bothered to hit them, and then just fades away. Horrifying.

In the Oberst vein, too, is the Counting Crows' Adam Duritz. It's that "someone's shaking me by my lapels but I'm gonna keep on singing even though my voice is perpetually shaking and trembling; hopefully you'll confuse it with emotional expression" approach. I get so tense when I hear it.

Rufus Wainwright is indeed annoying. No one should be that accomplished, especially at that age.

I'm not sure who this Joannie Mitchell character is that I've heard bashed--it certainly can't be the magnificent Joni Mitchell. If she'd only recorded the "Blue" album, she'd be on my best of all time list. I'm curious to hear this "Joannie" though.

And as for Bob Dylan having one of the worst voices on the planet...I would kill to be able to pick just one from a slew of his vocal performances to have on my resume. Aside from Hendrix and The Byrds perhaps, it's funny how so few of his songs have been covered by others to better effect isn't it? The voice and the delivery fits the song. Don't tell me...he's a crap writer too?

Oh no, Dylan is an excellent writer of contemporary song. But he shouldn't be allowed to play or sing anything at all (except, of course, in a folk club because there participation is what counts). He's a truly dreadful guitarist and harmonica player too.

Other Dylan songs done better by others include

Mighty Quinn (Manfred Man) and the Nice's version of the one that goes "She's got everything she needs she's an artist, she don't look back".

And didn't he write "Just like a Woman" - again better my almost all the others who did it.

The 2 worst singing voices that I ever heard were Stan Hugill and Bernie Klay.

Of course I respected these 2 great scholars of sea music immensely as they introduced me to the great world of Folk Music, but their singing voices were definitely irritating.

Another folksinger whose voice leaves much to be desired is a man named Charlie Maddox who is the resident entertainer at Big Meadows Lodge in Shenandoah National Park. You can listen to 2 of his selections on Youtube and hear for yourself what I mean.

? I'm lost. Did Birdseye put up Dick Miles because he likes him or hates him?

I'd never heard him, but he sounds great to me, I'll probably order a CD. Thanks for the link.

Actually, I once saw an elderly Bert Lloyd perform at a packed Farningham club, and to be fair his voice was hard to listen to, but it was an informative event that I would not have missed.

Funny, a post has vanished. Here it is again: -

OK, those Dick Miles tracks - do they stream, in which case they don't for me and so what player do I need, or are they clips I have to download and save somewhere to play in which case why don't I get a "save as" option, or do I need to let them buffer to the end and then they play, which I was too impatient to do?

I'll try them on a different computer to see if that makes any difference.

Topical Tom says "there is one famous, well-liked singer whose singing I find somewhat irritating. That being said, what pleases one person may displease the other, and this singer is very well liked by many. He is Bill Morrisey."

Bill Morrisey's voice is one of the few things about which my wife and I disagree. I can't say I like it, but it doesn't bother me. I'm drawn to his music by his lyrics. My wife says the fact that she went with me to one of his concerts a few years back only proves her love for me. That's very nice of course, but I haven't pushed my luck since then.

Dylan
Yoko Ono
Michael Bolton
Celine Dion
Leonard Cohen
Conor Oberst
those screamo "vocalists" who sound like the Cookie Monster on speed
breathy diary singing naval gazing "songwriters"
dunno, maybe others if I gave a shit about devoting more time to this trollathon

Declan Galbraith is annoying to listen to.

As to the works of Windsor Knot's, I still enjoy his early works.

Do I detect an influence in his music of childhood visits to the Denish fishing viliage of Hirtshals (possibly the amoeba-shaped violin and the giraffe-piano was once in his youthful hands)?

I suspect the joys of hearing skillingstryk, schottisch, trekanter, firtur, tretur and rheinlænde made up for the wintery-cold North Sea winds.

Oh, to hear his version of "Drømte mig en drøm" again would indeed be a true joy.

1) Edward Bear....his lyrics (put my full length mirror down??..he's a man for c's sake)are a close second to his voice for annoying..
2) Dan Fogelberg (R.I.P.)...leader of the band? one of those records you throw off a 90 storey building
3)Celine Dion...you have to live in Quebec to really appreciate how over exposed this little home town darlin' really is...
4)Allen Sherman...funny stuff but i'd rather listen to any one of our 30 or so cats wailing in heat..
5)Bette Midler..amazing woman, superb talent, but have you really listened to how mediocre and grating her voice is?
6)James Blunt...after my wife forced me to listen to his first album in the car about 700 times, I've reached a new level of disdane for this boring monotone one album wonder...I ended up selling the car and(accidently)left the album in the car's cd player...we're up to about 300 listens to his new album thoug, should have kept the old Honda..his new album is just miserable...
7) Rufus...despite my daughter trying to "learn me" about the genius of Rufus, i'm still wondering how he gets away with singing the same note for every lyric of every song he does. Move over Kermit the frog...whining voice or what??
8)Now don't take this personally...Willie Nelson...undoubtedly a brilliant, hugely poular talent, but i'm still waiting for him to sing a song on key...
9)Any singer that whispers or talks during a song. The only thing that annoys me more are children doing a chorus for holiday songs or T.V.commercials.
10)Joe Walsh...again a talented rock gutarist, but unfortunately no-one's had the nerve to tell him he can't sing. If I hear Rocky Mountain Way one more time....i'm sure we all agree on this one..

Rounding out the selections, here's another 10 that make you wanna scream...
Leonard Nimoy, "Proud Mary"
Sebastian Cabot, "It Ain't Me Babe"
Mae West, "Day Tripper"
Phyllis Diller, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"
Pat Boone, "Smoke on the Water"
Joe Pesci, "Got to Get You Into My Life"
Andy Griffith, "House of the Rising Sun"
Telly Savalas, "Loving Feeling"
William Shatner, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"
Bing Crosby, "Hey Jude"

If you really feel the need to hear these atrocities...

As far as "selections... that make you wanna scream", perhaps Clipper would consider adding:

Senator Everett Dirksen: "The Gallant Men."

Lorne Greene: "Ringo"

Walter Brennan: "Old Rivers"

Anyone remember Claudine Longet? She's a strong contender for all ten of the most annoying singers. Breathy whispery little girl oh-aren't-I-just-too-adorable-to-resist voice, which was so irritating that the only thing I had to resist was throwing the radio out the window. All overlarded with an exaggerated cutesy-pie French accent (when you compared how she sang with how she spoke). Makes some of today's vocal lightweights who get regularly criticised here sound like Ethel Merman.

She was married to Andy Williams, but is now mainly remembered for shooting her live-in lover, a playboy skier, as he dressed after a shower. Williams remained touchingly loyal throughout the publicity-emblazoned legal proceedings, though they had parted years before. She was acquitted, largely due to the fumbling incompetence of those who mishandled vital evidence which could not then be used in the trial. From the ballistics angle alone I don't see how anyone can have honestly believed she didn't do it. She wound up spending a total of 30 non-consecutive days in jail, which she was allowed to choose and that she served in weekends. Story's in Wiki and probably a zillion other places online if anyone wants to know more - my personal fave is Mick Jagger's take on it. ("Now I threaten my wife with a gun / I always leave the safety on")

I managed to miss hearing Longet sing Electric Moon by Donovan. Eidelweiss was enough for me.
