Subject: Lyr Req: HARBORNE PUB SONG (Malfunction) From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Mar 17 - 09:28 PM My transcription from the recording that Big Al linked to above: HARBORNE PUB SONG Written by Chris Laverty As recorded by Malfunction (John McGowan & Chris Laverty) [1] I've been many places, seen many smiles. Ain't sure where I'd rather be; it takes time to realize Friends can come and friends can go; it's not easy to settle down, But I've found the place I'd rather be: it's lying on the ground. [CHORUS] In the Green Man or the Junction or the little White Horse, Sportsman, or the King's Arms or the Duke of York of course, The Vine, the Plough, the Bell, or in the New Inn, I'll sit and while me hours away waiting for half-past ten. [2] You may think I'm crazy wasting all that time When I could be working hard until I'm past me prime, But I got a job as a traffic warden; it's got me down. I couldn't find no yellow lines lying on the ground. [3] Well I got a job in the circus as the missing link, For being behind bars all day it made me think of drink. Well, I thought I might be a lifeguard, save people from being drowned, But the only ones that I could find were all lying on the ground. [4] Well. I found my true vocation just the other day. I'm doing what I want to do and I'm even getting paid. I work for the local tourist board; I show Americans round. They won't get no finer view than lying on the ground. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Harborne Pubs '& the Little White Horse' From: GUEST Date: 26 Mar 17 - 04:38 PM It's only taken me 7 years to find this post!!! I'm John McGowan, half of Malfunction. The other half is Chris Laverty who wrote the song. It can be heard on our myspace site along with other live recordings from the time we were playing regularly. Haven't performed together for 7 years but rehearsing at the moment for a possible gig in the future. Cheers https://myspace.com/malfunctionfolk/music/songs |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Harborne Pubs '& the Little White Horse' From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Sep 10 - 05:26 PM There are several web sites that list pubs in various parts of the UK. I compiled this list for Harborne: Arco Lounge Bell Belmont Hotel Café Rouge Court Oak Golden Cross Green Man Grove Tennants Hall Harborne Stores Hillyfields Junction Kings Arms Kings Head New Inn Old House at Home O'Neill's Plough Proverbial Quantum Scarlet Pimpernel Sportsman Station Hotel Stonehouse Varsity Vine White Horse I offer no guarantees that this list is accurate or complete. I only present it in the hope that it may jog someone's memory and enable them to reconstruct the song, or parts of it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Harborne Pubs '& the Little White Horse' From: Ythanside Date: 24 Apr 08 - 09:03 PM Hi there, Julie. 'The Harborne Run', a popular feature of student life in Birmingham for many years, consisted of calling in for a pint at every pub from The Duke of York to the Green Man in a single session, usually on Friday evenings. One of my daughters was an enthusiastic participant in that particular tradition while at the nearby Med School. She's off on holiday at present and should be back in a few days. Being herself a keen Folkie she may very well have the lyrics you are looking for. We both know local singers and musicians there and I feel sure that, between us, we'll be able to come up with the goods. Cheers, Ythanside :-D) |
Subject: Lyr Req: Harborne Pubs '& the Little White Horse' From: GUEST,Julie Mc Date: 24 Apr 08 - 04:40 PM This song lists all the pubs in Harborne, Birmingham in the chorus - e.g The Junction, Duke of York etc. and the last line is "and the Little White Horse". I heard it many years ago (approx 30) but can't remember where - obviously in Birmingham! Would love to hear it again, or at least have the lyrics. Many thanks for any help. |
