Thanks sapper, especially the third link which has a bit about the music- but sadly it doesn't mention what I'm really after- the bit that was on between the test card going off, and the actual program start. I remember these from the godawful prep school I went to, so that would have been about 1960- 1964.

A tune sprang unbidden into my head- and I eventually remembered it was one of those short guitar pieces that the BBC played during the couple of minutes wakeup period just after the test card, but before programs started... the picture was if I recall correctly a rotating roundabout (not the Magic one).

Anybody else remember these, or even know what they were called?
