Subject: My Mayday day From: Hawker Date: 01 May 08 - 01:01 PM Hi, This year, instead of going and finding dancers at dawn or rushing off to Padstow for the 'Oss celebrations, I attended a very small funeral service at Barnstaple Crematorium for what was Bude Folk Club's oldest member, Miss Betty Gill, who lived to the ripe old age of 86 - and who, after finishing teaching college, and teaching for a year decided that it wasn't for her and bought a moped and sped off on it touring Ireland. She was a writer and artist and led a totally interesting life. She was a mine of fascinating information, spent a lot of time at Cecil Sharp house, loved teaching morris and longsword dancing though God forbid women ever danced it! Though maybe a little outspoken, she was never afraid to say what was on her mind, what she wanted and if she didn't like something. It was a priveledge to have had her as a member of our club, and to have shared her golden years. Her funeral was attended by 4 staff from the care home where she lived, a neighbour of that care home, the local theatre director and a member of staff, where she used to help out and 3 members of the folk club. It was a lovely simple service and humbled me completely. Maybe drinking and singing would have been more fun, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. God Bless Betty x Cheers, Lucy |
