Concertinas and...... (Milestone Music, 2007) by Dick Miles, Cathy Cook & Niall Boyle

Concertinas and...... (Milestone Music, 2007)
By
Dick Miles, Cathy Cook & Niall Boyle

At twenty-eight tracks this is something of a concertina marathon! Based for many years in East Anglia, Dick Miles is now resident in the South West of Ireland, and his concertina playing incorporates the two distinct traditions of England and Ireland. Dick is joined here by Cathy Cook on anglo concertina and harmonium, and her fourteen-year-old son Niall Boyle, also playing anglo concertina. This is raw, honest music -- no fancy production techniques, just the unadulterated sound of some great tunes and some fine playing. It's like having your own personal session pouring forth from your stereo!

The concertina is a punchy little instrument in the right hands, and Miles certainly provides such hands as he skips nimbly through reels, hornpipes and jigs with effortless aplomb. There are few tunes here that can be described as subdued but the Irish air, "The Croppy Boy," receives the concertina treatment, with a sparse arrangement that highlights to the affecting melody, even though this particular rendition is somewhat brief.

Amongst the twenty-eight tracks there are several songs that Miles sings with his plaintive voice in a manner that's as straight forward as his concertina playing. The song choice upholds the album's traditional credentials perfectly, including "The Banks Of Claudy," learnt from the Copper family, "Seeds of Love," collected by Cecil Sharp and the traditional West Country song, "April Morning." Miles sings with an honesty and authenticity that demonstrates both respect and empathy for the material.

This is an enjoyable, unpretentious album of tunes well played and songs well sung, with an unadorned beauty that belies its simplicity.
