Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website-lyrics & recordings From: Steve Gardham Date: 25 Jan 09 - 04:40 PM Thanks, Gervase. There were about 20 of us involved in the first phase altogether. The next phase is to get about 40 contemporary and industrial songs up there. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website-lyrics & recordings From: Gervase Date: 25 Jan 09 - 01:34 PM What a brilliant resource. I'm lost in admiration for the folk that put the site together. Superb! |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website-lyrics & recordings From: Steve Gardham Date: 24 Jan 09 - 03:57 PM I bet it's a bit chilly round the chops, Ray. No wonder you got the flu. You should have had the jab before you shaved it off. |

Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Jan 09 - 03:37 PM Ray Padgett made mention of the Yorkshire Garland Collection in another thread today, and I thought it was a good opportunity to refresh this thread and encourage people to take a look at this wonderful Website. Oh, and there is a nice picture of Ray and others on the Website. In searching for THAT Website, I also found that The Yorkshire Garland is available in its entirety at Google Books. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: r.padgett Date: 09 May 08 - 02:25 AM Have you tried speaker Rum'n ? Ian Russell is of course the Sheffield carols man and as Dave Eyre says has CDs of carols from all around Sheffield and into Derbyshire Ian has spent very many hours researching and recording and transcribing this area Ray |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: Rumncoke Date: 08 May 08 - 06:02 PM I seem fated never to learn a song through anything other than hearing it sung live - there is something missing from this pc which means that I can't hear the recordings. I did look on the WWW and could not find the missing doodad. Ah well - it isn't as though I have nothing to sing... |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: GUEST,Steve Gardham Date: 08 May 08 - 07:56 AM Dave, If you look at the prov notes on the site it mentions that Will first heard the song broadcast on radio 'Down your Way' as a lad. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: Folkiedave Date: 08 May 08 - 06:44 AM Just to make it clear - Albert undoubtedly picked up the song on his travels. Precisely where I have no idea - though Ian Russell may know. When I get a minute I'll ask. Dave |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: Kev The Clogs Date: 08 May 08 - 06:12 AM What a fantastic resource!! Well done to all involved. A superb way of keeping English tradition alive and well. I've already found a couple of gems - especially the Artillery Alphabet (from Woolwich) as I was born on Woolwich (South London). Good luck with the phase two - look forward to seeing what happens. The site is now listed in My Favourites! Cheers folks Kev |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: Banjiman Date: 08 May 08 - 05:18 AM Folkiedave.....I leave the research to those with the required attributes.....I'm just a simple banjo playing soul! We might have to learn it though (not on the banjo, obviously) for one of The Swaledale Folk Club nights in Richmond. Fascinating stuff. Interesting that the song was "collected" in Sheffield rather than in North Yorks though....but looking at the lyrics I guess it wasn't written by a local but more likely a visitor. Paul |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: Folkiedave Date: 08 May 08 - 04:40 AM "Home on the Swale" was introduced to the singing at Dungworth when Dave Smith replaced the previous organist at Dungworth and brought some rambling/singing friends with him from the pub at Lodge Moor (Three Merry Lads) where he regularly played the piano for singing. Amongst these friends was Albert Broadhead. Albert was an ardent rambler and a great singer. At a point in the carols Dave asked Albert to do a solo. He didn't do carol solos particularly but he did know that song. (We sing other songs that are not carols too). The original source is not known (there's a job for you Paul!!) but Albert learnt it off a friend of his - Edgar Tissiman who was a National Park Warden. The song is also known as ""The Song of Swaledale" and it was also sung by the Keld Singers. (Suggested starting points for your research Paul!!) Albert Broadhead died in 1996. The song was carried on by a variety of songers, until he died Billy Mills - last year two people sang it - most weeks it was Geoff Lester. The above information comes from a book that accompanied the CD of the Dungworth carols called "Hark Hark, What News", researched and produced by Ian Russell (CD and book). But I was there at the time, so the story is true! I don't know if the CD is still available - try Village Carols in Google. Hope this helps. Dave |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: r.padgett Date: 08 May 08 - 03:58 AM Beautiful Dale home of the Swale, is/was a favourite at the Sheffield Carols at Dungworth Was a favourite of the late Billy Mills and now sung by Roger Hinchliffe son of Frank and son in law of Billy Hazel ~ god knows is the answer to that one! We will have to look at each one and then include it anyway! I suspect but please don't quote me on this is I am only one and a little one at that!! Ray |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: Banjiman Date: 08 May 08 - 03:43 AM I'm really enjoying this! I love "Beautiful Dale, Home of the Swale" , I've not heard it before and I only live 2 miles from the River Swale. I shall continue to explore and no doubt find some further gems. Thanks to all involved. Paul |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: nutty Date: 08 May 08 - 03:40 AM How will you define a "Yorkshire" song Ray? One written by someone born in Yorkshire? One written by someone living in Yorkshire? One sung by someone either born or living in Yorkshire? And what do you mean by not exactly traditional? |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire Garland Website From: r.padgett Date: 08 May 08 - 03:14 AM Yes Phase 2 will continue collection of all those songs which are not exactly traditional! and the list is now officially open as to what we ought to have added to the collection! Bearing in mind copyright consideration and do they want them in! Note also that phase 1 is now officially over and specific expertise to maintain the web site upkeep will be needed, and Volunteers for specific tasks please contact us as needed and I will update fully Ray Padgett |
