I lost my older daughter at Sweeps time in 2005, she would be 27 on 12 May. So the end of April and early May is a poignant time for me too.   My thoughts are with all as you remember parted loved ones at the memorial BBQ.

Interesting, the Anglo Argentine Society Gran Asado takes place the week before, for which great quantities of Argentine beef/lamb/chorizos etc are imported especially. Let's hope for a period of good weatherfor both occasions.

I like the sound of the Gran Asdo - especially the Chorizo! There's lotd of events this weekend including Val's BIG b'day and the Biggin Hill Air Show so we're all hoping for good weather. At the moment the forecasters are saying showers/sunny intervals on Saturday but sunny on Sunday.

"Anthem of the Rainbow", by Forest Tollis and Robert Cosbey Junior. I have not been able to trace any other songs by them: a shame since this one is such a cracker. Recorded by Odetta in the 60s, but I learned it from Jacqui before she died and frankly I think Jacqui's version was better.

Thank you for the compliment. I noticed you were recording some of the trad ones, and if the recordings are any good I wouldn't mind copies. Maybe I'll put them up on Myspace if they are kind to my limitations!

Thank you Woodsie. I was quite nervous and as always, started everything in a lower range than my voice can cope with. Will I ever learn? Old dog new tricks! Or should that be new dog old tricks? I am new to folk scene as well as singing out loud and in front of actual people.

Biker Hill was brilliant Richard. Please share my regard with Kevin? and ???? (I had his name at the beginning of the afternoon and must've misfired a synapse cause it is gone now). So terribly sorry. Pleading Halfhiemers.

Speaking of synapses, I've been mixing ideas I heard at the party. The Mud House (big brother scenario)) should be great fun and a good way for many to get to know the players personalities.

Anyway, I noticed the death theme was on the playlist yesterday (I knocked off a fair few myself). Remembering Valerie's (I hope I am getting these names right?) comment about happy folk songs, I wondered if there could be a MudCat thread of CSI invesitgations on the following. The death count in RB's repertoire. The slaughtering of songs by TDL. And let's not forget the "crimes of fashion", Melodeonboy. Perhaps the thread may inspire a comic song about folk murderers. If you put Girl Friday and Mumblin Len in the Mud House that could be one of their tasks.

Good grief my brain is so weird. Time for a bendryl and a nap.

Thank you Virginia. That particular arrangement of Byker Hill is almost a straight rip-off of the Young Tradition's version (well, at least my melody line and Royston's harmony), and it went horribly wrong at the deathiversary party for Jacqui (my late wife) and Pete (Hicks, Val's late husband) as I started it a third down, so it was encouraging to get it fairly right.

Linda, thanks for a fab. afternoon, Billy, Gina and I had a brilliant time and it was fun putting faces to some more mudcat names!We got home in record time of one and a half hours to find that this end of Essex had had thunder and lightning and deluged with rain, we were so lucky in your garden.Sorry we were not there for the clearing up , I will excuse you from the same when you come to Billy,s big bash in August( or are you at Sidmouth?)

Royston? Is that Kevin or the one whose name escapes me? And did you perform Byker Hill at the Good Intent during the Sweeps? The young woman singing so impressively with you - your daughter? I love harmony but unfortunately can only butcher (murder theme again) when I attempt it.

I had followed some other threads shortly after the Sweeps and discovered that you were holding a BBQ in honour of loved ones. Didn't mean to be nosey, just trying to get to grips with people and their handles after the Sweeps. I think I left good wishes and my thoughts for that event, but I don't know where.

Sweeps Weekend is an emotional time for me, because buried my daughter Andie (23) in the 1st week of May 2005. She was THE SINGER in the family and now I suppose I sing in memory of her. I rarely sang in public before her passing.

BTW. My partner Chris is also a Hicks.

Royston is the one without the hat (and dark glasses). Royston Ford. Formerly the tenor in our band "Roger the Chorister".

Kevin is the one with the hat (but no glasses) dyed black hair and not as much grey beard as me.

We did Byker Hill in the Good intent as Sweeps and the best run at it was on the Sunday, when we had my daughter Rachel putting what was pretty much an octave of my line over the top. She is very loud!

I have searched and searched words and combinations and cannot find the song Linda performed. Something about tinker mending pots and kettles and tailor mending finery, soldier who fought in all of your battles, the sailor who fished the sea.

Also could someone tell me the song the young woman sitting next to Royston performed. Learning her name would not go amiss (I hope). I think she may have been Mum to the Merry Little Hostess who so professionally kept serving the beer. I remember her from the Good Intent at one of the sessions during Sweeps. Why don't I take notes?

Linda, if you want to see and try to make one of the beaded caps I told you about. I am hsppy to send photos in email and talk you thru. They are really easy, though they take about 7 to 9 hours to complete. Lots of counting and repetition, a bit tedious but that's just fuel for an OCD like me. I'd put in the link to pictures on MySpace, but I think you have to be regitered user to access them.

Thank you Linda for playing Folly Bridge at the beginning of BBQ.

We bought the Folly Bridge cd All in the Same Tune .... Enjoying it now as I type this. Sweet, so sweet. Love "Lowlands" and "Watercress" and "Fundy Bay" for tingle factor.   

I am always impressed by a cappella. FB harmony not quite so full as the 4 part of Ramskyte, but nicely reminiscent.   I do enjoy the female voice of Claire Giles (Lloyd).
