I shall be visiting Penzance for a few days between June 18th and June 24th 2008.

Can anyone advise me of any folk venues open during those dates?

From the South East to the South West

Stuart Pendrill

Go to The Pirate on a Tuesday night utterly superb
There may be a change of venue so check, but one of the best sessions we have been to, the tunes are stunning.

Used to be a great session every Monday at the Star Inn, St Just (Penwith). Also I heard there's a good session at the Tinners' Arms in Zennor, not sure which night though.

There's also a great restaurant/old smuggler hangout called the Turk's Head. Well worth a visit.

Cheerily,

And Penwith (where St Just and Zennor are) is well worth visiting too, a beautiful unspoilt wild bit of Cornwall.

The Tinners in Zennor is on Thursday nights, IIRC. Apparently (I heard this from a mate) the session's got more "mixed" in recent weeks, and now has singers as well as instrumentalists. Lovely pub, too.

I am told there is a not much publicised session at the Gunnards Head Hotel in Zennor, Thursday.

Folk News Kernow does not list anymore.

What a nice response, thanks all you Catters.

It certainly seems that I'll will find lots to do in the evenings and also during the days, and I wont forget to take in all the natural beauties that Cornwall provides as well.

hope to see some of you there

Thanks again

Mr Red

The Gurnards Head Hotel is not in Zennor (though not far away). It used to have great sessions there, but as far as I know, all live music there stopped with a new landlord takeover (shame, was great).

The Gurnards Head now has a Cornish evening on Mondays and an erratic session on the first Wednesday in the month.

Every other Wednesday (check Folk News Kernow for dates) there is a session upstairs at the Admiral Benbow in Penzance.

Sundays there is a Folk Club at the Wheal Dream in Wendron,Helston and a session at Cadgwith every Tuesday.

If you do decide to go to any of these let me know and I'll let people know to look out for you.

If you can extend your stay a little there is a Folk weekend at the Wheal Dream from Friday 27th - Sunday 29th June.

Hope this is of use.

Marion

Thanks Marion in Cornwall, unfortunately, we will miss the session in the Admiral Benbow, but will try to get to Wheal Dream on the Sunday but regrettably we can't extend our time in the South West.

I'll pm you nearer the time when the schedule is finalised.

thanks again

Stuart Pendrill

The Wednesday session at the Gurnard's depends on who turns up as to whether there is singing or not, but everybody is welcome.
