Subject: Lyr Req: song of the humpback whale - Lyrics From: VirginiaTam Date: 14 May 08 - 04:42 PM Heard the most haunting lovely piece at a sing around last week in Margaretting. Wracking my brain to remember specifics about it. Trawling Google to find it. I suspect it may have been covered or written by Richard Shindell. The message of the song is sympathetic to the whale's plight. Would love to find a recording of this. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song of the humpback whale - Lyrics From: Jim Carroll Date: 14 May 08 - 04:52 PM I think it was composed by the late Rod Sherman - if not, he wrote one with a similar title. He made a CD of his compositions just before he died, it may be on that. Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: LYR ADD: The Last Whale From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 14 May 08 - 07:44 PM There are many threads about this song & Danny Spooner also sings a great version of it. It's been mentioned in Mudcat many times & has been harvested for the Digital Tradition from 2 versions of the words posted by Joe Offer back in the olden days, but here are Andy Barnes's words as posted by him a few years ago In this thread Lyr Req: The Last Whale Full version as originally written Sing and enjoy Andy THE LAST OF THE GREAT WHALES CHORUS: My soul has been torn from me and I am bleeding My heart it has been rent and I am crying For the beauty around me pales and I am screaming I am the last of the Great Whales and I am dying. Last night I heard the cry of my last companion The roar of the harpoon gun, then I was alone I reflected on days gone by when we were thousands For I know I soon must die the last leviathan. This morning the sun did rise crimson in the north sky The ice was the colour of blood and the wind did sigh I rose to take a breath it was my last one From the gun came the roar of death and now I am gone And e'er since time began we have been haunted Through the oceans that were our home we have been hunted From Eskimos in canoes to mighty whalers Still you ignored our plea none came to save us Now that we're no more, there's no more hunting The big feller is now gone there's no use lamenting What race is next in line all for the slaughter? The elephant or the seal or your sons and daughters? WORDS AND MUSIC - Andy Barnes AUGUST 1883 COPYRIGHT 1986 - FRIENDLY OVERTURES ========================== sandra |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song of the humpback whale - Lyrics From: Ross Campbell Date: 14 May 08 - 11:05 PM The Song of The Whale can be found here, with chords and a sound sample. It's also on Eric Bogle's site (ericbogle.net) but it's a pdf file with copyright warnings and I couldn't get the blue clicky to work (and cutting and pasting would have been against the author's and publisher's express wishes - although they will consider requests). But lo! It's already in the DT here , along with a bunch of his other songs. Ross |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song of the humpback whale - Lyrics From: VirginiaTam Date: 15 May 08 - 02:40 AM What a response! After checking the various links, I find it is the Eric Bogle song that I sought. Though, through this thread, I have discovered some more good 'uns. The link showing the chords with the lyrics is brilliant. Thank y'all for playing. |
