We have had a lot of intelligent debate in the Mudcat forums about what folk is, what folk should be, whether anyone should get paid for being a folk musician or singer, whether folk should be entertaining, how folk should be protected, how only the right sort of people should be allowed to attend folk events, and how some festival organisers are evil parasites. But are Mudcat contributors representative of the average folk festival or folk club attendee (and does it even matter). You (or should I say we?) are a fairly small, and specialist crew, with a high average age and obviously many years experience either as performers or well known characters from the world of folk.

Contributors have strong feelings about almost every aspect of Folk but do they seriously wish to have a recognisable influence on the folk world; I think you/we probably do. How about a brand new Mudcat Folk Festival?

And how about listing the requirements, intentions and rules for the new constitution?

It should have as many 'fringe' events as booked concerts and they shouldn't coincide more than once a day.

The Admiral and Herga Kitty should run the singarounds.

I think it should be a 'quiet as possible' festival, with the following rules;
- No amplification
- All singers forced to whisper rather than sing out loud.
- No banjos, melodeons, bodhrans or other noisy instruments. All string instruments to be stuffed with old socks.
- All clog dancers to wear crepe soles.
- Drinks to be ordered by holding up written notes for the bar staff to read.
- Ceilidhs to be held using 'silent disco' headphones, perhaps playing a different tune for each participant.
- Lights out and no noise on the campsite after teatime (or bedtime, whichever is earlier)
- All stewards to be equipped with large signs saying 'sshhhhh'
- All festivalgoers must wear completely red outfits, and go round moaning about the noise.

it would need to be somewhere where the sun shines continuously the week before, and then from the opening concert onwards, the vilest and most horrendous storms occur washing away tents and engulfing camper vans in three foot of mud -so I reckon anywhere in England really!

It needs to have a well drained campsite with no stones or 'permafrost' layer 3 inches below the surface. I've bent so many tent pegs trying to hammer them through rocks, bricks and a layer of earth so solid you could use a jackhammer on it and not make an impression.

Well Rowan, one makes that choice at every singaround. In a way - you choose a song - or whatever and its your calling card. There are people there who've not seen you before, and it can't convey your whole personality - but one tries to give an inkling of what one is about.

If we had a cyber festival - people could contribute who can't play due to present illness or personal difficulties.

LTS: I've been puzzling over that phenomenon for ages. Standard British Tent Peg = 6" long. Standard British Campsite - 3" of soil on top of a layer of granite. I think the answer is to take a truckload of soil and a steamroller with you .......
Regarding the festival idea: I liked it; but then I remembered that this is Mudcat. We'd NEVER reach any concensus about when, where, who, etc.

Been and had my dinner and come back.....I thought, what we COULD do is to arrange fringe events at festivals where there are enough of us. Mind you, I can't afford to get to them as a punter, and still haven't found out how you get booked - a phenomenon that has been puzzling a lot of people for a long time. Mind you, I have been invited to Gainsborough this year. Obviously one of the more go-ahead festivals!

Harmonium Hero: We do already have fringe MudGathers at various festivals in the UK. I organise them at Banbury, Bedworth, Crediton, Alcester & Upton and the organisers allocate a venue for us & pop it in the program. We also publicise them on the Cat! Here's the thread about Banbury 2007 which had a programmed Gather!

At the bigger ones I run (we can get as many as 60 Catters at a Gather) we have a MudRaffle which raises a few £'s to send to Max to help with running costs for the site. We also introduce ourselves, hug a lot, drink beer, eat chocolate (sometimes homemade concoctions so it's always best to ask what's in it first) and have a singaround so we can hear each other!

There are other Catters running them at UK festivals and also ones local to Catters in Scotland, Northern Ireland & Yorkshire, not to mention the EuroGather which I'll get along to one day! There are also Gathers across the Pond and at various locations around the Globe. There's always room for another MudGather, it's just a case of getting organised with the right place & time, then letting us know about it *grin*

where at "X" o'clock local time people were supposed to sing a
song--and keep it going around the world..some peace thing i think..
if we could find this we could use it as a model..i believe there
were giant video screens set up so everyone could experience the
concerts...if they were not able to attend in person..

surely mudcat is a mix of singing AND music.......

we should have lots of sessions aswell, but not in rooms next door to sing arounds as it's impolite to play over singers (most of the time!!!)

Some people don't like singarounds......there should def be lots of non stop fast and furious sessions aswell!!

Rowan: Hi. Haven't got that sorted yet; I still don't know how that notation works. I did a bit of googling, and found out all about Thatcher. Interesting story. I had a look through a couple of books of Aussie songs that I bought a while back, and found three or four of his songs. I also spotted a book of them for sale from a museum in NZ. I might order one when I've got a bit of spare cash. The postage from there is probably a mortgage job! Watch for developments...
Guru: Thanks for that info. I'm not at any of those festivals, although at one stage I thought I was going to be at Upton with an Appalachian team I play for. But we didn't have enough dancers available. Maybe next time. I'll watch out for other Mudgathers. There isn't one at Chippenham, I suppose? I'm ther dancing with Rumworth Morris - and praying for rain; the heat kills me!

The folk song revival movement has been littered with affectations, misinformation,
and a kind of musical elitism. Fortunately, the music is bigger than this.

The absurdity of setting of rules by revivalists for folk music is self-evident.

The power of folk comes from the accessibility and community of people who make music for themselves and (like the sand-lot baseball player are participants) rather than observers in this music.

The future of folk music lies not on the concert stage or the myriad CD's hocked at
coffee-houses but when as in a traditional sense, people use folk music as a recreation
collectively. Much of this is done in living rooms, back porches or in the field when some work is done or as lullabies. It has a social basis and defies the isolated "artistic" expression of the solo performer on a stage with a distant audience. The walls often break down in some churches as well (particularly the African-American ones) between solo and congregation. There is something ironically absurd about creating an "art-song" approach to folk music by spending enormous sums of money in a recording studio to foster a "personality". However, much of this music is listenable and enjoyable despite whether it's called folk music or not.
