this song is one that has been handed down in my family for as long as i can remember. but as it is oral history, i cant find the song lyrics or tune anywhere. here is a small sample of how it goes.

"i stuck my head in a little skunks hole,
the little skunk said
well bless my soul!
take it out, take it out, take it out, take it out remove it!

well i didn't take it out and the little skunk said
take it out, take it out, or you'll wish you were dead.
take it out, take it out, take it out, take it out, remove it!"

since its a round about it can go on forever. and of course the kids love it. please if anyone can tell me were i can find the tune i would greatly appriciate it!

The Little Skunk's Hole

Tune: Turkey In the Straw
Written By: Unknown
Copyright Unknown

Oh, I stuck my head
In the little skunk's hole
And the little skunk said,
"Well, bless my soul!
Take it out! Take it out!
Take it out! Remove it!"

Oh, I didn't take it out
And the little skunk said
"If you don't take it out,
You'll wish you had,
Take it out! Take it out!"
Pheew! I removed it!

Anybody know another song that ends with "take it out, take it out, take it out, take it out, remove it!"??

The line sounds familiar, but not in connection to a skunk.

It is more like the tune..."Oh I wish i was in the land of cotton,
old times there are not forgotten, Look away, look away, look away, Dixie land"

we sang Psssst , I removed it.

by the way if this happens use tomato juice or acetic acid (vinegar) to neutralize the smell. the link below says "Pet sprayed by a skunk?"

JOE -

My guess is you are recalling the Rugby Woodpecker Song.

WOODPECKER SONG

Melody?Dixie

I put my finger in the woodpecker's hole,
And the woodpecker said, "Lord bless my soul,
Take it out, take it out, take it out,
REMOVE IT!"

I removed my finger from the woodpecker's hole,
And the woodpecker said, "Lord bless my soul,
Put it back, put it back, put it back,
REPLACE IT!"

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Oh, I stuck my head
In the little skunk's hole
And the little skunk said,
"Well, bless my soul!
Take it out! Take it out!
Take it out! Remove it!"

Oh, I didn't take it out
And the little skunk said
"If you don't take it out,
You'll wish you were dead,
Take it out! Take it out! Remove it!"

Oh I didnt take it out
now i wish i had fled
Oh i didn't take it out
now i wish i was dead
so if you ever come across a little skunks hole just take word from me you can just say "bless my soul!" and Take it out! Take it out! Remove it.

In my opinion SKUNK SONG is NOT the tune of TURKEY IN THE STRAW

Here are the piano notes the way I remember them from boy scout camp in 1950
I wish somebody would tell me chords for ukulele or guitar (claerbout@stanford.edu)

F# E D D D (down octive to) F# G A A A
Oh I stuck my head in a little skunk's hole

And the little skunk said, Upon my soul,
D E F# . . . D F2 E E

Take it out! Take it out! Take it out!
F# G A (octive down) A A A A A A

whshhhhh

A Bb A
I removed it.
