Subject: Folklore: Today is the day of Ninian (Crispian) From: George Papavgeris Date: 17 May 08 - 05:16 AM OK, it's stretching to name this "folklore", but it is based on one of the most famous speeches from Shakespeare's plays. And it is topical too - referring as it does to the football Cup Final taking place later today in Wembley Stadium (for the non-UKers: this is like the Rose Bowl and Christmas all together for us here; and for once, the two finalists, Cardiff City and Barnsley, are not among the rich, big clubs, but two "Cinderellas" that somehow made it through the qualifying stages. Also worth pointing out that Ninian park is the name of Cardiff's football stadium, hence the play with "Ninian" for "Crispian"). The voice is - for those who might not know him - Frank Hennessy's, one of the greatest Welsh folkies today, singer, songwriter extraordinaire and host of the Saturday Celtic Heartbeat programme on BBC Radio Wales. Enjoy the speech. |
