OH GLORY, HOW HAPPY I AM
Reverend Gary Davis

When I was out in the world of sin,
I had no one to call my friend,
Jesus came and let me in.
Glory, Hallelu..
He took my feet out from the mire'y clay,
Put them back on the rock to stay.
I'm so happy I can say, Glory, Hallelu..

CHO:
Oh, Glory how happy I am,
Oh, Glory how happy I am,
My soul's been washed in the blood of the lamb.
Glory, Hallelu..

Now when I had no home to claim,
I began to call on Jesus's name,
To save my soul from sin and shame.
Glory, Hallelu..
Stand back Satan get out of my way,
I don't want to hear another word you say.
I'm on my way to the King's Highway.
Glory, Hallelu.. CHO:

One day when Jesus was passing by,
He set my sinful soul on fire.
Made me laugh, made me cry.
Glory, Hallelu..
I'm finally baptized in the Holy Ghost still.
Out here to do my Master's will.
I must keep goin' I can't keep still.
Glory, Hallelu.. CHO:

He took me in through his open door.
Said, "Go your way and sin no more."
I'm on my way to the upper bright shore.
Glory, hallelu.. CHO:

I copied these down from Andy Cohen's CD entitled "Oh Glory, How Happy I Am". The "baptized" verse is unclear to me, so there may be some errors there.

Enjoy the music.

These are all the words, as I transcribed them from one of Pete Seeger's "Rainbow Quest" TV programs, of which I have a video copy. The program dates back to the mid-60s, and Davis' performance is mesmerizing. I have the TAB for the song, but it is too difficult for me to play right now. Maybe I'll try it in a year or so...

Does anybody else out there play this song?

O GLORY! HOW HAPPY I AM
By Rev. Gary Davis

Oh when I was out in the world of sin,
I had no one to be my friend.
Jesus came and he taken me in.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

And then he taken my feet out the miry clay.
He placed them up on the rock to stay.
I thank God that I can say,
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Chorus:
Well Glory! How happy I am.
Oh Glory! How happy I am.
My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

I lay in darkness, and I could not see.
Jesus came and he rescued me,
Cleared me and give me a victory.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

One day while Jesus was passing by,
He set my sinful soul on fire.
He made me laugh, and He made me cry.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Chorus (2x)

I could not understand.
Jesus he give me a lending hand.
He led me away to the Promised Land.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

And then he give me a horn, and he told me to blow.
Go in peace, and sin no more.
Then he led me away to the other wide shore.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Chorus (2x)

(Instrumental break)

I lay in darkness, and I could not see.
Jesus came, and he rescued me.
He cleared me and give me a victory.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

One day while Jesus was passing by,
He set my sinful soul on fire.
He made me laugh, and he made me cry.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Chorus (2x)

Listen:
I know something that's mighty swell.
Sweet little story I love to tell.
Jesus saved my soul from Hell.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Won't you stand back, Satan. Get outta my way.
I don't wanna hear not a word you say.
I'm on my way to the Kings Highway.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Well thank God I got over at last.
Thank God I got over at last.
My feet is planted on the narrow path.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Chorus (2x)

When I had no home to claim,
I began to call on Jesus' name.
He saved me from all sin and shame.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Now, fire baptized and Holy Ghost filled,
I'm out here to do my master's will.
I must keep going. I can't keep still.
Glory Hal-le-lu.

Chorus (2x)

("Talk Miss Gibson" - Instrumental break)

Chorus (4x)

Thanks for the additions Easy Rider. Reverend Davis was a consummate street singer with a vast repertoire. He had a head full of "cut and plug" gospel verses and this song is just one example of his work. Probably never sang the song the same way twice.

Does anyone take the words we post here and add them to the big database?

Easy Rider, the DT is up-dated twice a year, roughly in the Spring and the Fall. One source for updates is a perusal of the threads. I think Dick and Susan do some pickin' and choosin' to keep out the pop stuff for example.

It is a tedious task for sure.

Great! That means my postings of lyrics here will not be in vain. Eventually they will make their way into the DT database for all to see.

Thanx

I'm sure Jocatgo doesn't think your posting was in vain. Hmmm, reminds me of Robert Johnson.
