Subject: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 May 08 - 07:28 PM Right folkies, due to popular demand, I have asked a local hotel to pencil in the weekend Hopefully we can do it all again only better this time. The hotel has 23 beds, and if we fill them then there are local B&B's. Malcolm the governor has quoted a special discount rate of £30 per person per night, for B&B The hotel is called The Achness Hotel, and it is in Rosehall. It is just a little bit further the the last venue, and not so close to the station [Lairg], however I can arrange to get people transported to the hotel from the station. All those interested, please let me know, as it is only pencilled in at the moment. We need to see what the response is, before we finalise the details. Giok |

Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: maeve Date: 23 May 08 - 02:02 PM Yes, Mary- foolish, silly, thoughtless. You can find it in the Oxford English Dictionary (my favorite) as well as You-tube. Here's just one of the links Mr. Google offers, with a bit of the probable origin of the word discussed: http://www.word-detective.com/2007/06/08/glaikit/ I expect that glaikit could apply to me more often than Megan or Giok will admit, kind folk that they are. It's a condition I strive to avoid, however and not one I would particularly associate with the Scots of my acquaintance. |

Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Aug 08 - 03:59 AM Yes please come Sorcha, I'm sure you would benefit from the free exchange of ideas and information. It's nice to meet people face to face, and to find out if they're really what they appear on line. Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Sep 08 - 01:24 PM Right, there are 9 people actually booked in, and another 9 or 10 people staying locally who will attend. There are still 5 twin rooms, and 2 single rooms available. Tomorrow I will send out invitations to about 20 Scottish based musicians, so it's a first come first serve situation now. The nearest station is Lairg, and I will collect anyone who needs collecting. The hotel has the best selection of bottled beers in the locality, including most of the Wychwood varieties, Marston's, and Spitfire. Someone mentioned cider, and if they want a specific bottled cider, I can ask Malcolm to get it in. Not so long now. JM |
Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: John MacKenzie Date: 05 Sep 08 - 04:46 AM As mentioned before, there is space for caravans/motor homes etc. JM |

Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: maeve Date: 17 Sep 08 - 09:33 AM Well gnu, it's really the 24th/25th/ 26th of October. The glaikit one corrected the dates in a later post. "The hotel has 23 beds, and if we fill them then there are local B&B's. Malcolm the governor has quoted a special discount rate of £30 per person per night, for B&B. The hotel is called The Achness Hotel, and it is in Rosehall." And I'm glackit wi' jealousy. Have a wonderful time. |

Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: bruceCMR Date: 10 Oct 08 - 07:01 PM Hope you all have a good time - sounds like a good weekend, in a fantastic part of the country.. If you're driving through or near Glasgow on your way north,, tune your radios in to 1530kHz (at the top of the medium wave) and have a listen to us - Celtic Music Radio. By that time, we'll have been at the Celtic Connections press launch, and will have news on the various acts that will be playing at CC2009. If you want any publicity for the event, drop us a line (studio@celticmusicradio.net) and we'll add it to our "what's on" diary. Bruce Celtic Music Radio http://www.celticmusicradio.net/ |
Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Oct 08 - 12:53 PM Don't think I ever answered the thing about specific ciders. Not a fan of Magner's or Bulmers or Kopparberg, and definitely NO ICE. Cider is best at room temp! If they have draught Strongbow or Blackthorn, that'll do, but in bottles, anything from Westons or Thatchers. |
Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: John MacKenzie Date: 11 Oct 08 - 12:57 PM Hmm, not much cider drunk up here, I will have a word with Malcolm and see what he can get hold of. John |
Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: Tattie Bogle Date: 11 Oct 08 - 01:06 PM Well as I said, if they've got draught Strongbow, which seems to be the default in Scotland in those pubs that have any draught at all, it'll do! |
Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: lady penelope Date: 11 Oct 08 - 01:35 PM Mmmm..... Thatchers..... My favourite bottled one is the single variety pressing - Katy. Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: bruceCMR Date: 15 Oct 08 - 07:57 PM Not me - I tend to spend my time behind the scenes...dealing with the engineering side of things. If you hear me on air, it usually means that something is broken... :-) The "top-of-the-hour" ident, and several others, were done by Iain Anderson, a well-known broadcaster on BBC Scotland, and a good friend of Celtic Music Radio. The other jingles and idents were produced by some of the presenters. At the moment (just after midnight here in Scotland) we're on autoplay - you can see the last 30 tracks played by clicking the "playlists" button on our website. At 1am on weeknights, we replay our "feature programmes" from that night, which go out live on the 7pm-10pm slot. Tonight it's Gordon Hotchkiss, who focuses on Scottish and Irish folk. It's actualy a repeat of one of his shows from earlier this year - he wasn't able to do a live broadcast tonight, as he's in Canada at the Celtic Colours festival. Tomorrow's features (or is it later today?) are Mark Sheridan's Music & Arts magazine show (4pm-6pm), Gerry Rossi's "Connections" show from 7-8 - a wide variety of music with celtic and jazz influences. At 8pm we have a new presenter - the Bill Adair blues show - and at 9pm it's Upraid, the gaelic show, produced by John Joe MacNeil and the team in Vatersay. Gerry, Bill and JohnJoe's shows will of course be replayed at 1am uk time tomorrow. Bruce. |

Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: John MacKenzie Date: 19 Oct 08 - 03:56 PM Right, we now have about another 8 musicians coming, all good peeps. Jim Bainbridge is playing locally on Wednesday, and we hope he will stay on till the Saturday at least. The others are mostly Scots musos, and of course we will have Dave Goulder with us for most of the time,as he lives 15 minutes walk away. All in all, it's looking like a really good musical weekend. Anybody who wants collecting from trains or anything, make sure to let me know. Don't forget raffle prize donations please, for the Mudcat funds. JM |

Subject: RE: 2008 Scottish Mudgather From: Tattie Bogle Date: 27 Oct 08 - 08:21 AM Drumshanty and I had a great time too, so thanks to John and all the hotel staff for making it happen so smoothly, and to all the fellow Catters for the music and craic. Sorry we left without saying our goodbyes to those staying outwith the hotel, but with the clocks changing and the foul weather, we thought it best to get on the roads after breakfast: and I knew that if we stayed for the next afternoon session we just wouldn't want to leave! Apart from the meteorology, it was a beautiful run with all hte autumn colours, and we spent an hour-and-a ahlf in Pitlochry at the "Perthshire Amber" festival's afternoon open stage. Photos to follow, especially the Cassley Falls - You were right Penny, much better than the much more visited Shin Falls! |
