Lyr ADD: On a mountain stands a lady
(Trad)

Here is a slightly different version of this rhyme, which was obtained from my family tree book and was sung by children in Leeds, Yorkshire, England in the 1920's.

On a mountain stands a lady
Who she is I do not know
All she wants is gold and silver
All she wants is a nice young man
So fall out my very best friend
So fall out my very best friend
It's time for you to go.

When my twin sons, now 32, were toddlers I used to bounce them on my knees while singing I'm A Cow-Poke Pokin' Along; a song I learned from an old Gene Autry Record.

"Put Your Finger in the Air" by Woody Guthrie. In fact, all of Guthrie's children's songs. There's an excellent recording of them by Arlo and the whole Guthrie Family.

Good show!

How young is he? 2,3,4?

If so, sit down with him, holding him on your lap, if he likes, and do fingerplays. (Google 'fingerplays'). Or go to the library and look for fingerplays.

Fingerplays are the good old rhymes of yore - 'Here's the church & here is the steeple' 'Two little blackbirds sat on a hill' etc

He will like it, and just like music, it will develop his sense of rhythm and rhyme.l

(Saw an article in the paper by a child psychologist. He said 'For today's children, love is spelled T-I-M-E.')

There have been several threads on this and similar topics, but I can't find them! someone will no doubt come along and help.
In the meantime here's a suggestion from one of the mudcat pages.

Good luck!

hi

i have a young son who loves music and starts to dance and move around when he hears music on the radio and tv. his mum is always singing to him mainly nursery rhymes at the moment and some have actions which he likes to try and do too. i was hoping that people might have some idea on any songs we can sing to him that he will enjoy joining in with?
