According to my unabridged dictionary, (1934) a rant is "a gay tune, song or dance." So apparently a rant can be any length or in any time, so long as it's gay.

I like that idea.

In Scottish music, a rant is [in my definition] a tune of 8 bars (2 lots of 4) played abab, and then repeated to make 32 bars, e.g. - for instance, Nathaniel Gow's "Fairy Dance".

An expression used in Oz is "to go out on the rantan" - i.e. to have a night on the town. I can remember my mother using it, and it is mentioned in at least one song.

The award winning Molson Canadian advertisement.
(We won't discuss the liquid they produce)

THE I AM CANADIAN RANT

Hey,
I'm not a lumberjack, or a Furtrader,
and I don't live in an igloo,
or eat blubber
or own a dogsled.
And I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,
although I'm certain they're really, really nice.

I have a prime minister... not a president,
I speak English and French, not American
and I pronounce it About, not A-boot.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack,
I believe in peacekeeping, not policing,
diversity not assimilation,
and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.

A toque is a hat,
a chesterfield is a couch,
and it IS pronounced Zed,
not Zee... ZED!!
Canada is the 2nd largest land mass,
the 1st nation of hockey,
and the best part of North America.

My name is Joe...
and...I......AM......CANADIAN!

Thank you.

Video available here

Is a rant.

'We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors......' !!

Or "like true Queensland Drovers" or "like New Bedford Whalers."

That chorus gets around!

The BBC either ignore traditional english music or they treat it as a joke. They do much the same with our traditional customs. They are ignoring the revival of interest in folk music much as they ignored the pop music revival of the sixties. The only folk programme they put on Radio 2 is designed to keep an audience - not promote folk music - thus it tends to be bland.

That's a rant.

In historic (18th cent) country dances, the word "rant" in the title seems to have been used to describe any lively dance. e.g. "The Marquis of Granby's Rant" which very definitely has a hop-step tune.

For those not entirely happy with dance definition (not sure I am) Farmer and Henley's Dictionary of Slang and Colloquial English gives this selection:
Rant. 1. To talk big, high, or boast much (B. E.); to storm, rave: in this sense rant has always been literary. Whence, however, many usages more or less colloquial:— Rantan (randan, randy, rand, randy-dan, rant, ranty, rantan, or rantytan), a jollification, (2) a wenching bout, (3) the sound of a drum, and (4) a drunken frolic; also as verb (or to go on the randan, etc.), to go on a round of debauchery; ranter, (1) extra va¬gal) ts, unthrifts, lewd sparks, also of the family of love {B. E.); (2) a noisy talker, bawling singer, or ruffian ; (3) a Primitive Methodist: often extended to Dissenters generally, and spec, to a sect dating from 1822, self-registered as such in the Census returns; (4) in pi., idle, drunken bolstering ; ranting, (1) in high spirits ; amorous ; (3) extravagant; randy (or ranty), (1) a beggar, ballad singer, or tinker: espec. such as bully or menace; (2) a scold: also randy-dandy (or ranty-tanty); (3) a ramping wanton; (4) see Rantan, supra; as adj, (1) vagrant; (2) thieving, shrew¬ish ; (3) wanton ; as verb, (1) see rantan, supra.; and (2) to beat continuously, as a tinker; rantipole, (1) a whore, and (2) a romp (q.v.), a gallant hussy ; as verb, to run about wildly ; and as adj., wild, rakish, jovial (B. E.); to ride rantipole (see Ride); rantanker-ous, quarrelsome. 2. To appropriate anything in a forcible manner : ' Let's go and rant their marleys,' says one urchin to another, and straightwa}' the pair annex the possessions of a more respectable party. But it is also used to denote undue freedom with females, and springs, no doubt, from rantipole.

That's good to know. I remember "Keep Your Feet Still, Geordie Hinny" as a great record when I was a kid.

No, not a jig. Rant tunes can also be played as reels, polkas or hornpipes depending how you emphasise the notes.
Cheviot rant, Flowers of Edinburgh, Soldiers Joy, are examples, played not too fast so that you can get the steps in (4 dance steps instead of 2 walk steps).

There are several songs and tunes called 'rants', Collier's Rant, MacPherson's Rant. Could anyone tell me what defines a 'Rant', is it the rhythym, lyric or what?

Thanks.
