Got home after being away for a few days, checked my email to find one from Terry Heaslip with the sad news that Kay Burkin has passed away after being ill for some time. Kay has been a stalwart of the Kent folk scene for many years, and with husband Phil was part of Vulcan's Hammer back in the 70's.

Condolences to Phil and daughter Corinne.

Condolences from Peter and Diane Taylor. We knew Phil and Kay at Farningham in the early 70s, and in fact a leaving present from friends was a signed copy of their LP. I still enjoy it, perhaps more now than then.

Seeing Phil & Kay guesting up in Gillingham in the late 70s was a wonderful evening- someone (Alex, I think) recorded it and I've a cassette of a full folk club with their audience right with them- and it was with mixed emotions that I saw them last perform together at the Sweeps. Mainly sadness that one of the unmissable voices of the Kent Scene was making her last appearance. Kay always had a kind word for performers who were doing their best and was modest about her own contibution, which was considerable.
Condolences to Phil and to the rest of the family, both personally and from all of us at Tonbridge (Nellies) folk club.
Bob Kenward

Thank you so much for starting this tribute to Kay. She was a lovely, kind, amazingly talented lady. Somewhere in Heaven they are having a fabulous time singing with her.
My sincerest condolences to Phil and family.

I was very impressed with the vocal work of Phil and Kay Burkin in the 70s.

Hope it isn't weird to refresh a thread this old. I was searching for Vulcan's Hammer on the site, to see what threads they were mentioned in and saw this.
I never met her, wasn't even alive when she was making a lot of the music she made, but I have listened to her singing on both Vulcan's Hammer records for hours and hours. She had a beautiful voice and, more than that, she sang with that quality where you feel like you almost need to sing along. I have trouble putting it into words. She made the kind of music that makes me want to make music when I listen to it, you know?
A friend showed me Vulcan's Hammer a couple years back, and they are his favorite band. Really amazing to think about how some people making now relatively obscure music with their loved ones, seemingly just for the joy of singing and playing together, can be listened to and enjoyed almost fifty years later by people who never got to hear it in person. I hope all those who were close to her are doing well and know that her music is still being listened to and loved.

Another sad event that was missed the first time around. Thanks Teefy for resurrecting the thread. Checking out Vulcan's Hammer online is well worth doing. I have added Kay to the "In Memoriam" thread.

RIP
