Every year I help in a Rotary project called Kids Out -when we take underpriveleged and special-school children with their carers -usually to a safari park (UK) I get to sing on the return journey and try to sing as many animal related songs as I can -
poppas taking us to the zoo tomorrow, mud mud glorious mud,
hunting tigers out in india....    and so on
anybody got a favourite list of such songs that I might find one or two I may have forgotten

If you don't mind a few puns, try "You're An Animal" by Nancy Tucker.

"The Fox Went Out On A Chilly Night" has been entertaining kids and adults for six centuries or more. It should be good for one more round.

And Puff The Magic Dragon. Peter Yarrow, his daughter Bethany and Rufus Cappadocia have a wonderful CD available by that name for the child in all of us.

Also Teddy Bear's Picnic and the Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Hi, Fogie - find yourself a copy of Ruth Crawford Seeger's book, Animal Folk Songs for Children Her children Mike and Peggy recorded all the songs (plus a few more) on a two-CD set on Rounder called Animal Folk Songs for Children. You can find the book in many U.S. libraries.

If you can find the tune,
"Emily's Animals"
is a sure kid pleaser. It's from the "No Bath Today" album, by the Tune Mammals. A wonderful song, we learned it from Judy Cook. Actually, Judy and Dennis gave our kid the album. Wish I could find it now....

Whoops, quick correction of the DIgitrad lyrics for Emily's Animals. The first line of the chorus is

No family or friends come around our little door

not exactly folk, perhaps but you can do actions to 'There was an old lady wh swallowed a fly' and kids seem to like it.

At least they tend to look amused.

No family or friends come around our little door. And I wonder why nobody comes to visit anymore.

Here's a version of Alice The Camel with a sound clip that sounds like the African American song "Dry Bones" (them bones them bones them dry bones etc)

http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/lyrics/sally.htm

Alice the camel has five humps.
Alice the camel has five humps.
Alice the camel has five humps.
So ride, Alice, ride.
Boom, boom, boom, boom!

Alice the camel has four humps.
Alice the camel has four humps.
Alice the camel has four humps.
So ride, Alice, ride.
Boom, boom, boom, boom!

Alice the camel has three humps.
Alice the camel has three humps.
Alice the camel has three humps.
So ride, Alice, ride.
Boom, boom, boom, boom!

Alice the camel has two humps.
Alice the camel has two humps.
Alice the camel has two humps.
So ride, Alice, ride.
Boom, boom, boom, boom!

Alice the camel has one hump.
Alice the camel has one hump.
Alice the camel has one hump.
So ride, Alice, ride.
Boom, boom, boom, boom!

Alice the camel has no humps.
Alice the camel has no humps.
Alice the camel has no humps.
'Cause Alice is a horse, of course.

-snip-

On other website the last line for each verse is "go Alice go". I've never heard this song with the "boom boom boom boom" line, but I like it.

That word "website" in my last post was supposed to be plural.

**

Sometimes it's good to sing a song that children are likely to already know, and one they can sing along with-like "Oh McDonald Had A Farm". Yes, I know you're going to the zoo and not a farm. But still it might be a good ice breaker.

**

You could chant the "Lions And Tigers and Bears Oh My" part to "We're off to see the Wizard" from the Wizard of Oz movie. You could change the words to "We're off to the zoo". It might be fun.

**

There's always "Fuzzy Wuzzy"

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy
Wuzzy?

Critter Choir, mentioned above, is by Bill Staines, and has some
great clap-along, hoot along and howl along parts

You will find several threads about Waltzing with Bears,
which is a sort-of take-off on Dr. Seuss' about Uncle Terwilliger

There is also a song called Habitat which educates about the need for
a place to call home.

the chorus goes Habitat, habitat, have to have a habitat...

see also Banana Slug Slug String Band, a group of science teachers
who do a great job of info-tainment.

also there are a few rounds (or whatever you call those songs that repeat and add a verse each time....) the Green Grass Grows all around....and there's a hole in the bottom of the sea...

in such songs there might be a nest with an egg with a speck...etc.

or there might be a bug on teh wing of the bird on the nest on the branch on the tree.....etc.

Raffi sings a lot of kiddie critter songs...and has a book or two
of them i am sure..also there is a series of books called Wee Sing...

Habitat is by Bill Oliver, and appears on one of his LPs.
