We will be there and supporting Dick Gaughan on the Saturday night concert. If the sun shines like last year there is nothing better than sitting in the old court yard drinking real ale (I forget the name but one of the pubs sets a bar up in the court yard serving a number of real ales) and enjoying the music.

Sorry not good at the blue clicky thing but here is the link to the festival web site

www.wessexfolkfestival.co.uk

hope to see you there

I went down for the pre-festival warm up session at the Kings Arms by the harbour side last week. No singing but the Irish tunes were blistering hot.

You're right, in fine weather, there is no better place :-)

I picked up this bit of blog re the Wessex Folk Festival in Weymouth last weekend. It really says it all:

Saturday

Going to the Wessex Folk Festival tomorrow in town for what will either be Bright Sunshine + Pretty Music + Fruit Cider + Great Company or Pissing Down + Eccentric Elderly Morris Dancers + Orange Squash + Miserable Wet Weirdos.
All depends on weather. That is what life in Weymouth town is like.

Sunday

THE WESSEX FOLK FESTIVAL WAS AMAZING!!!

DRANK LOTS OF CIDER, HUNG OUT WITH MAH AWESOME CHUMS, LISTENED TO ROCKING FOLK IN A VERY PACKED TOWN SQUARE

Sun was almost opressively hot, which was better than we could have dared to hope for. Cider tents served even the most dubiously of-age (and, obviously, underage). People I hadn't seen for a bit turned up. Wacky Morris dancers were wandering around, as were weathered old fishermen and aging hippies. There's nowt so queer as folk festivals.

There was a group playing Corrs-ish Irish fiddley folk, and another one played English Napoleonic war ballads. It was all very well done and not at all naff. We ate crepes and ice cream and chips (the ice cream was Cadbury Buttons - amazing!)

Stompin' Dave's set was the highlight of the day. He was on fire, stomping faster than he's ever stomped, and he broke two strings on various of his string instruments. Everyone joined in on Grandfather Clock and he did the Duelling Banjoes bit from Deliverance. He got a standing ovation, which made us as his Boot Inn groupies very proud ;D

A big thank you to all supporters!

'THE WESSEX FOLK FESTIVAL WAS AMAZING!!!'

It certainly was and I can't wait for the next one. The combination of fantastic weather, passing boats, friendly organisers and music of all folky types that really rocked IMHO sets an awesome standard for other folkl festivals later in the year. Wessex FF could grow and grow and easily rival Sidmouth, if that's what the organisers want, of course.

The only down side is the camping accommodation. I was lucky enough to scrounge a bit of concrete at the Cadet Training Centre to park my camper but next year I don't think that will be available because of redevelopment and the alternatives look expensive and inconvenient.

If anybody want to see some piccys, I took loads and am putting them on over the next days at

Was it Radio Solent or Wessex FM walking round with micophone in hand? I do know that Bob Ford Frome Valley Morris Squire (and possibly Lennie Leggett) were cornered for their views of the festival. I suspect many others were, as well. All I can say, is that the festival was FANTASTIC. The siting and format cannot be faulted. Many thanks to those, who's work behind the scenes isn't always realised, or appreciated by the masses.

Now what ARE dates for the next folk festival?

Many thanks for the piccys Rob.

Following the success of this year's event and the very positive feedback from all sides, it is fairly safe to say that there are already plans afoot for 2009!

"That is what life in Weymouth town is like."

Seems like it's not changed in the 20 years since I lived there then...

Glad it was a good festival - sorry not to have made it down but life got in the way early on.

I still think I knew James Findlay before he was born... I feel so old.

Press coverage has been better this year, and there is even an interview with Maria Greenwood on Wessex FM, which is destined to be broadcast on Sunday evening at 10.00pm featuring two WFF organisers.

Check out the video footage on the "Wessex Folk Festival" facebook group site, showing James Finlay in action at one of the pub sessions! James is also booked for the Seafood Festival in Hope Square, Weymouth on the 12th July and then again at Evolve, Weymouth on 26th July. Weymouth is a great place to be this summer!

just got this e-mail from DADGAD maestro Paul Openshaw:-

Hi,

If you have a radio, then tune in to Wessex FM on Sunday evening for Maria Greenwood (who incidentally was one of our song contest judges)! Mr McDaid and myself will be doing an interview with Maria and talking about last weekend, among other things. We also took along Jigsaw's demo CD, so there is likely to be a bit of fiery fiddle folk music also. The winner of the song contest will also be announced over the airwaves at this time.

Did you see tonight's Echo? They did a very good job of Mr Hopcott's letter and even printed a photograph!

Any minute we will have our very own blogspot. This will be a great way to capture the moment and give everyone the opportunity to have their say. The other place which is worth a visit, in the parallel ether universe, is Mudcat, where, in among all the other folkie gubbins, you will find a Wessex Folk Festival thread.

Keep it coming folks. We need your support.

Paul

A couple of friends managed to catch the song session in the Kings Arms on the Sunday afternoon and said that it was terrific, made their week-end especially as they stumbled upon it completely by accident.
