Subject: Folklore: Planxty similar groups? From: MoePerry Date: 02 Jun 08 - 05:36 PM Hello! I have bought the wunderfull Live DVD from Planxty: http://www.planxty.ie/ The music is magnificant, at the slow songs I close my eyes and can see the green hills from Ireland. I like to hera more music like Planxty but don´t know groups who are playing in the same way as Planxty. My question is: Please can you list here some groups that are playing in the same or similar Art or way that Planxty is playing? That would be very nice from you and then I will be happy. Friendly Greetings from Moe Perry |

Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: MoePerry Date: 02 Jun 08 - 06:01 PM Thank you very much for your quick answers, they are very helpfull. I just saw and here some webpages with music samples from Bothy Band and from the solo carreers of the Planxty members. They are all making fine irish folk, that I really like. Now I know what are my favorite CDs that I like to buy in the future. The singing from the woman at Bothy Band is amazing! |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: azfiddle Date: 02 Jun 08 - 08:47 PM What is it you like most about Planxty? Is it the choice of songs, the instrumentation? There may be other groups you'd also like, such as Dervish, Teada, Danu ... and lots of less well known groups as well. |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: MoePerry Date: 03 Jun 08 - 05:42 AM Hi azfiddle! Thank you for your answer. From Planxty I like most the instrumentation. Specially the pipes are so magnificant. Tonight I will look in the internet at the webpages from the groups you recommend in your posting. Friendly Greetings from Moe Perry |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: MoePerry Date: 03 Jun 08 - 06:00 AM In between I could listen to some music samples: Danu: the voice is phantastic, it sounds so soft! Teada: some very fast uptempo instrumentals that I like Dervish: very traditional irish folk music with a spectacular woman voice I like most Danu because of his gentle voice. |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 03 Jun 08 - 06:10 AM Planxty were preceded by Sweeney's Men, a band which contained people who later became part of Planxty. They are worth checking out. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: GUEST,Gulliver in the sun Date: 03 Jun 08 - 06:24 AM You might like De Danaan. They had some fine singers, such as Mary Black and Maura O'Connell, with them over the years, and great instrumentation. The early Mary Black recordings had some great songs. Andy Irvine's group Patrick Street is another. Don |

Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: Liam's Brother Date: 03 Jun 08 - 09:54 PM Moe, All the groups above are, at the least, a little different. All the suggestions are good and you will, I'm sure, like some more than others. Listen to Providence too. All the best, Dan |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: Rapparee Date: 03 Jun 08 - 10:17 PM Pick up a book called "In Search Of The Craic." It's a good read, a fun read, and is loaded with information on these and other groups. |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: MoePerry Date: 04 Jun 08 - 08:35 AM Hello! Once again many thanks for all your helpfull answers. I really expect so many reactions on my question. I guess that here at mudcat.org many folk fans are chatting around from all over the world? It is really fine here and I like the manners here because you are all very friendly and nice. From all your new band names, this is my favorite: Lúnasa: When I hear the pipes and flutes I feel like I be suspended (glide) sphericalally through the green hills from Ireland. Now I have some excellent choice from band names and can now choose some CDs that I like to buy. Some groups even have DVDs! For me here in Germany are the DVDs from irish folk gropus important because the groups I like are not playing here in Germany. I wish you all the best and many thrilling and fine discussions here at mudcat.org: THE worldbest Folk messagge board! Friendly Greetings from Moe Perry |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: MoePerry Date: 04 Jun 08 - 08:37 AM correction: I wrote a little mistake in my last posting. This sentence is wrong: "I really expect so many reactions on my question" This is the right sentence: "I really DON´T expect so many reactions on my question" |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: GUEST,Neil D Date: 04 Jun 08 - 09:03 AM Davey Spillane is another fine uilleann piper. |
Subject: RE: Planxty similar groups? From: Susan A-R Date: 04 Jun 08 - 09:44 AM Cherish the Ladies also has some fine playing and singing. Johnny Doyle also has great taste in songs and is a fabulous guitarist. And those Patrick Street tunes and songs are great. I think that Trina, the singer in the Bothy Band was also in a group called Touchstone. Not sure if their stuff has been re released though. |
