Subject: RE: What old acts are around festivals? From: Abby Sale Date: 06 Jun 08 - 07:00 PM The lead act at Mystic this year are Finest Kind. I think they've been singing together 30 years or more but the actual act is 17 years. There'll also be lots of other old people there. Me too, although I'm not an act. Charlie's old. |

Subject: RE: What old acts are around festivals? From: the button Date: 07 Jun 08 - 10:30 AM I don't think "genius" is too strong a word for Dave Burland. I haven't heard him for over 20 years, but I only need to think about his performance of Lizzie Wan, and it sends shivers down my spine. |

Subject: RE: What old acts are around festivals? From: Harmonium Hero Date: 09 Jun 08 - 12:10 PM I'm doing Gainsborough. I qualify for this thread on the grounds of age (61 and looking around for an 'Old Git' T-shirt), and the fact that I dropped out of the folk clubs from 1983-'90, and then spent a few years performing on a very limited scale, and have only been back in proper circulation for about three years. I'm trying to get on more festivals, but haven't found out how. It's something that has been puzzling a lot of us for decades. Any ideas? John Kelly. |
Subject: RE: What old acts are around festivals? From: r.padgett Date: 09 Jun 08 - 12:58 PM It seems to me that a lot of "old folkies" are returning now that they are in their 60s and kids have moved on [ok i haven't any I know of] This could be a good thing too as lots of good songs have been lost for a time! I think that clubs need people at the helm who know what they are doing and have the time to organise Minus side ~ appropriate rooms and venues held regularly Audience who are knowledgeable and appreciative who want to come and listen and join in Ray |

Subject: RE: What old acts are around festivals? From: Stringsinger Date: 09 Jun 08 - 01:28 PM So now folk music are now "acts". The festival circuit perpetuates the show-biz myth of identifying "folksinger". The term "act" defines some of the specious performance art that some call "folk". "Acts" are fine as long as we don't confuse them with folk music. Dog and Folkie Acts are a kind of acoustic vaudeville (though they require sound systems and DI boxes). Some are entertaining. |
Subject: RE: What old acts are around festivals? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 09 Jun 08 - 01:50 PM What old acts are around festivals? dope smoking, fornication, chorus singing, excess drinking, loud carousing, the telling of tall tales...... and other ancient sins. Dog and Folkie Acts are a kind of acoustic vaudeville .... whatever turns you on......although I suspectyou are confusing folk festivals with Scandinavian nightclubs. |
Subject: RE: What old acts are around festivals? From: GUEST,Willy Nilly Date: 09 Jun 08 - 02:06 PM "although I suspect you are confusing folk festivals with Scandinavian nightclubs." Or certain establishments along The Reeperbahn in Hamburg, about which I have absolutely no knowledge, I heard about these places from a neighbour who heard about them from Paul McCartney, who should probably know better ;-) |
