Not really much to do with the thread, (thread creep) but we've just done over 5500 miles in our in five and a half weeks. ((Say what you like about carbon footprint etc...it was our holiday) Orkney to Harwich via Dundee and Selby. Harwich to Holland (by boat) Holland to Southern Germany (Black Forest). Into Switzerland. Then into France. Back into Germany. Then up to Holland. Holland to Harwich. Selby, Dundee, all along the heritage trail round the coast via Aberdeen, Peterhead, Frasebrough, Nairn to Inverness, Loch Ness. Fort Augustus, Fort William, Oban. Seil and then back to Orkney.

Our van never missed a beat. X reg (2000) Citroen relay 1.9D with a pop top. Converted by a bloke in Birmingham. Tinkered with and put fit for our purposes with out own modification.Took Miss and Mrs viking. Aragon the Lab and Loki the cat. Great fun.

Campers are such useful vehicles.

On the subject of Fiat though I was always amazed at the 500cc Fiat Amigo conversions with the cantilever roof. How on earth they did it I don't know - But they did!

There must be a good choice around you in Huddersfield and surrounds. When we lived in Marsden, Lockwood and Cleck, we'd go to Goodalls at Crosland Moor to buy bits and pieces and also Mitchels near Wakefield. (They have the REAL expensive kind at Goodalls !)But may know someone who is trading up. E-bay is where we bought ours from ,but I had to go from Orkney to Birmingham and then, back in an untried camper (seems alright though now we've fixed all the things that we were lied to about) Be careful with e-bay, but there are some really good deals to be had. (we are off to Germany in 3 weeks time in ours)I'd always go for a camper, can use it any time,go any where, less packing up as most of it is always ready. You can buy a "drive away awning" and so keep your spot at a campsite.I've seen no end of caravans on their sides. Never wanted one myself as storage, towing etc can be a problem. Had a trailer tent, great fun but when it's blowing a gale and pouring down putting it up can be a nightmare. Camper van, stop, put the kettle on !

Romahome looks a good bet and can be got cheaply. Mrs Viking and I converted an ex post office Morris marina van as our first project (That was some years ago)We were never at home at weekends after that. You can do that cheaply, all you need is a little skill and some tools to get it right. There is so much gear and supplies available now to convert your own. If you get a cheap panel van, you can do it yourself again quite cheaply.< Depending on the type of van and your convertion, you can re-register the body type with the DVLA as a motorhome. There was a really good scrapyard at Holmfirth where Mrs V and I salvaged a much improved interior for a VW van once. There used to be a reaaly nice little Fiat van some years ago. Plenty to choose from.

How about a ...... TRAILER TENT?
If you are used to camping then it is a good bet that you could take to a trailer tent with very little problems ...... and it is very easy to tow, cheap, comfortable (compared to a tent), and you already have all the bits and bobs you are likely to need!

How about one of those little caravans that Romahome make and even a little car can tow them. they go for about £700 on e bay.

not true about about any vehicle under a thousand being crap. If you spend that much at an auction, you willl be competing with the guys who sell cars for abot two and a half thousand from a used car lot. And you have the edge - they are looking to make a profit and pay VAT etc.

Being one of those people who drives every day down the A30 through Cornwall, I will say every time, go for a campervan. By the end of the summer I could probably pick up from the side of the road where a caravan has gone over, virtually any part you might need! When we chose between a camper and a caravan we went for a camper every time. OK ours is modern and big but we started off with a small one. If you are on a site all you have to do is leave your number plate on a piece of wood stuck in the ground and no one should take your place. If you are on a hook up you will have to unplug but that takes just as long as it takes to take a plug out of the socket. It really depends what you want to use your van for. We tend to use ours for festivals and consequently arrive, put the handbrake on and put the kettle on! We don't use it to tour about during the day. Have a look at a magazine like MMM where you will find lists of cheap campers at the back and also advetisements for reputable dealers who sell cheap vans. They do exist ~ when we traded ours in the dealer sent it on to one of those. Have fun with your van.

Think long and hard before you follow this course, buying any vehicle for £1000 is liable to be fraught with problems. Do you have a tame mechanic you can take with you to look at a van if you find one. I would hate for you to buy one and then be lumbered with bill after bill for repairs, throwing good money after bad.

Eric, VW campers were painted just like any other vehicle,
they just ran 'em down the line and painted all the exposed
metal, as they did with other VWs.

As far as I know, the only extraordinary treatment was given
to the ones which had white tops and lime-green bottoms with
a royal blue "racing stripe" wrapped around dividing the two
colors. Those, apparently, were zinc-chromated which may be
one explanation for why so many of them were going strong
when the green ones and the red ones and the white ones and
the baby-puke yellow ones were rusted to perdition.

You could also consider using an ordinary car as a camper.

In the past I've slept in cars with all the seats down + a free standing gazebo/awning for extra space/cooking etc

I have had a camper and a caravan a friend has made his own another friend has a run of the mill transit van with a mattress no one will no you have a camper you can take the mattress out and use it as a van.

Greg, your point is well taken but the reason the metal was painted all one color is that the vehicle was powder coated rather than painted. It's a very efficient process which minimizes the VOC's in the air and gets to all the odd spots on the vehicle.

My caravan may not still be made but there is one now that is smaller, goes by various names but it is so small the kitchen is round the back and out in the elements. Mine has a wash basin too.

I used to tow mine with a Fiat Marbella - worth a look into.

To say nothing of safety. At least with a trailer (caravan) you've
the safety of your modern tow vehicle in which you ride.

More than a decade ago I took it into my head to do just the same
thing and began to look at old 1st-generation VW camp-mobiles.

I drove one--- then realized that the sheet metal by my toes was
the same color as that on the nose. The reason, dear reader, was that
it was one layer of same between my toes and its nose, meaning that
my poor legs would be the thing that took the brunt of a blow should
the feeble brakes fail to stop me before I arrived at the articulated
lorry in my path.

That was a bit off-putting, to say the least.

Then again, one might argue that the available horsepower was
insufficient to get up enough speed to cause actual damage beyond
a bruised shin. But over here, we DO have hills you know, and I
might have been going down one and exceeded 20km/h in so-doing.

Other than that, it was the only vehicles that would actually
gather its bug-strikes on the REAR window.

I heartily agree with Richard's recommendation of a caravan.

The idea of having to completely 'up-sticks' if you want to drive off somewhere strikes me as absurd. We have a small 2 berth caravan (successfully towed by a 1.4 diesel Ford Fiesta) that gives us flexibility with economy of 35 - 40mpg whilst towing.

And you only use it when you need it - it doesn't come with us on the shopping run like a Campervan would.

If you have the space to keep a caravan, Soldierboy, I strongly recommend a caravan instead. You aren't dragging it around when ou go shopping the rest of the year, and if you do want to pop off site to buy supplies then you don't have to de-camp, lose your space, and re-level and re-plumb when you return, and many have a shower and space for a portaloo.

Speed limits when towing are a bit of a bind, but I find I usually pretty well keep up with most capmervans apart from the better modern behemoths.

And my caravan cost me £250.

Sorry to post this here but I am looking for a Campervan and am having great trouble finding one so thought I might test the power of Mudcat to see if fellow mudcatters could help me.

I am getting to an age when camping is becoming increasingly hard work for me so I am looking for just a small compact campervan to tootle around to festivals in.

Trouble is I am not awash with cash so the maximum budget I have is £1000. Yes I know that's not a lot for a campervan and I am probably on a hiding to nowhere but if anyone out there has outgrown their little mobile home from home or it's rarely used and not worth taxing/insuring anymore or knows someone who the fits the above description please let me know here or PM me.

I am based in Huddersfield,West Yorkshire,England and am not too bothered how old it is or how small the engine is so long as it is not falling apart and can be relied upon to get me from A to B. Ideally it would just be a small campervan with a basic stove, fridge and sink etc and I do not require sleeping space in the roof/ceiling.

I can promise that it will go to a good home and will receive plenty of TLC.
