Subject: Didn't wake up this morning!
From: Nigel Parsons
Date: 10 Jun 08 - 07:46 PM

At Cardiff's BBC club this evening, Bob Woodley introduced a blues song, saying that all blues songs seem to start "I woke up this morning"!
I took this as both inspiration and challenge. The result is quoted below. Obviously, this was "off the cuff", so if anyone wants to use it, or improve om it, then please feel free. I have sung it once (at the BBC club) and now consider it to be 'public domain'.

Cheers
Nigel

(I) Didn't wake up this morning
Alarm clocks they're no u...se.
Didn't wake up this morning
Didn't don my socks and shoes.
Didn't wake up this morning
I've got those Zombie Folker blues

Didn't wake up this morning
Don't need no kilt nor trews.
Didn't wake up this morning
My clothes I didn't choose.
Didn't wake up this morning
I got those Folking Zombie blues.

Didn't wake up this morning,
I know it's no excuse
Didn't wake up this morning
That's why my voice is just no use.
Didn't wake up this morning
I' got those undead, uptight, deadhead, poor wight, Zombie folker, almost talker,   blues.

Nigel-

That's a promising start. Maybe when I've had my morning/afternoon coffee I'll be able to make some suggestions.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Woke up yesterday morning.
Woke up this morning you know.
If I wake up tomorrow morning,
That'll be three in a row.

I think these lyrics have been inserted into some earlier Blues thread or blues-parody thread.

There's one version in the DT . and a quote from Dave the Gnome.
And one from Kendall.

Anyway, this is a very good development on the theme.

I now find the Ultimate Blues in the DT was written by Songster Bob

Mike Cross has been doing a version for several years:

Dead Willy Blues

I did not wake up this morning
I did not get out of bed
I looked down from the ceiling
And I saw that I was dead

Chorus:
I've got those "Dead Willy Blues"
Old "Dead Willy Blues"
Well how long have I had 'em
Those old Dead Willy Blues.

Well the doctor came to see me
And then he told my wife
"I think he's dead," but by wife said
"He's like this every night

Chorus:I've got those "Dead Willy ….

Undertaker came to get me
And my wife said through her tears
"I wish you wouldn't haul him off
He ain't been this stiff in years"

Chorus: I've got those "Dead Willy ….

(I think it's on a couple of his CDs, but will have to dig them out to check.)

John

Okay, so now I know I'm not original, but it was only half an hour between Bob Woodley coming off stage & me being called!
Cheers

As noted, lots of blues songs start off with "I woke up ... ."

There should be nearly as many possible variations on "I did not wake up ... ."

All you have to do is write the one that sells the best.

("Sales" to be in the currency of your choice. I'm a bit short on all kinds except congrats and applause at the moment.)

My baby ain't gone and left me
My old hound dog ain't died
So how 'm I s'posed to sing the blues
When even my lawyer aint' lied

I'm just a l-o-o-o-s-er
When it comes to singing blues
'Cause no one wants to listen
When you've only got good news.

John

I'm still stuck with waking up

I woke up this morning felt sure I'd been here before
I woke up this morning felt sure I'd been here before
I prayed to the Lord (hey Lord hear mah prayer) to free me from this news
I've got the never ending reoccurring (stuck with Andie McDowell) bad ole Groundhog Day Blues (oh yeah)

It's got one hundred and fifteen verses all the same apart from a tiny little difference in each

What happens if you sing the blues backwards?

You decide not to kill yourself.
Your wife comes back to you.
Your dead dog comes back to life.
You win the lottery.
You find yourself surrounded by good friends who understand you.
You are really cheered by all this good fortune - what a lucky guy you are!
You get into bed and go to sleep feeling really happy.

Marje

I b'lieve twas on an earlier joke thread: "What was the blues man's epitaph?" "He didn't wake up this mornin'."
