Some folk artists seem to have been around for ever! What happened to some of the good ones from the 70s and 80s who just disappeared? Who impressed you?

There were so many. The Fast Folk scene here in the NYC area spawned some incredible songwriters, but I think many of them were trying to reach a level that just wasn't attainable. It seemed like an attempt to recreate the 60's folk revival but the world had moved on. When a few artists were signed by major labels (Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin for example), the rest seemed to be waiting their turn. When it did not happen, some just gave up.   There are a number that still carry on and continue to perform and create exceptional music, but those are the ones who learned what the music scene was all about and they have carved their niche.

I'd rather not post any names. I'm just amazed that some of these artists did not reach more ears, and I am very sorry that some of them just disappeared.

One of the best, IMO, who really hasn't disappeared, just changed his focus, is Charlie King.

Paul Kaplan has just started entertaining again after a long hiatus.
His agent recently contacted me about playing our house concert series.

Another fine singer whom I miss is Carla Sciacky. She seems to have dropped out of the folk scene altogether.

Miles Wootton was a name I remember as a great writer - he was never one to seek the limelight but I gather on the grapevine that he's still going strong, and people still sing his material.

Yeah,Guest, Paul is one of my favourites too. He is still about, i heard from him a couple of years ago.Living in kendal, working with wood, i dont think he is singing much, but can't be certain. There was some thought about him putting a c d together of his best songs, but i dont know if it happened.      salty   X

In the early 70s around Toronto, there were a couple of American guys, Stu Mitchell and Jerome Smith, who were buskers and club-players. They were great interpreters and songwriters. Wherever the are, I wish them well.

I keep trying to remember the name of this guy, had his album but it was waterlogged & smooshed in a basement flood alas:

Pearl River Turnaround- went something like "only six miles to the Pearl River Turnaround, never very far in the sun or the snow"

wonderfully witty and clever songwriter. Um , lessee, he also did a story about
Sally Cooking Fat, a cat who thought he was man, but based on some political figure. Had this terrific album out in the seventies, I think he hailed from New England but not sure.

ARggggg, now he's even forgotten by ME but I loved his music..Stike a bell mudcatters???

Murray McLaughlin?? A great loss not to hear them again.

Ditto about Fast Folk btw, almost every act they booked was a gem. Too bad they closed.

For Lefthanded guitar,

Pearl River Turnaround and Sally Cookingfat were by Chris Rawlings. He's still around. I saw him last summer at Branches & Roots in Ormstown playing new material.

Fraser & DeBolt broke up decades ago. Daisy DeBolt still releases new music on her own label and Allan Fraser pops up occasionally at folk events in Montreal. His daughter, Kaya Fraser, is quite a good singer-songwriter.

Murray McLauchlan is still quite actove as a performer, recording artist and playwright.

Didn't Nick Fenwick play with a trio that included Mick Elliot & Ed Pickford (a great songwriter)who ran a folk Club in Sunderland called the Nickolodeon.

I don't know if you classify him as folk but I've always loved Jim Croce. I Got A Name, I Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Bad Leroy Brown such a great range of songs.

He died shortly after I was born, but I love his voice and his style of song writing.

Carla Sciaky---what a delight to see that name again. Years back she was a guest on the program with me (TRADITIONS) and I just loved her lilting voice.   

My understanding was that she still performes locally as a solo artists and also with a group.

Her label was called Propinquity--and from that we did a little trivia contest on the program---what does it mean?   Had only about 2 or 3 correct answers, as I recal.l

According to the Apple Hollow website, it's Chris Crilly, not Chris Rawlings, who will be playing with Garnet Rogers.

BOB LIND -what became of him?

He was the one who recorded "Elusive Butterfly" - his debut album was, I seem to remember, very good and showed a lot of potential but he seemed to vanish withour trace. Rather like a more cheerful Leonard Cohen.

Perhaps he never recovered from having "Butterfly" covered by Val Doonican!

Interesting if anyone had any info on him.

Nick Fenwick's band , I think, were Mad Jocks and englishmen. Nick was a very funny man. Rather quiet and circumspect offstage, as I remember.

My favourite from that period was Brownsville Banned. The greatest live act.....There was a sort of Bolton mafia - bob Williamson, Bernard the Knocking Nelly bloke whose name has slipped into my personal abyss, and brownsville. they were photographed together on Bob's first album. Bob's album was of course on the Sweet Folk and country label run by Joe Stead. their label mates were Downes and Beer and Dave Turner. Dave was more alternative than anybody I ever met.

Nina of Hand on Heart had a decent band at the time called Blackthorn. I saw Brownsville at Nina's club a few times.

there were a lot of great acts: Roger Brooks, The Maccalmans, Ian Campbell's final group with Aiden Foord, etc

so it goes, as Kurt Vonnegut said!

Jim Croce's widow, Ingrid, has run a jazz and dinner club called "Croce's" in San Diego's Gaslamp District for many years. Their son, A.J., has his own band and has played nationally for some time. He counts his dad among his influences, along with Mose Allison, among others. They had moved here not long before Jim died in the aircraft accident and had planned to put down roots. We're all glad she stayed.

there were several Francophone singers and a few Anglo singers working in French who got their start in that decade in Quebec.. Most of them all did well with their careers and moved into other related activities...

I'm sure that I've missed some.... but there was a lot of music and new artists emerging hot on the heels of the 60's.. which gave us Vigneault, Leclerc, Charlebois, Julien, Butler, Jean Carignan and it keeps going way back....to La Bolduc and beyond to les rigadons, gigues, chanson repondres et plaintes.....

Sometime back in the 70s at the Golem in Montreal I saw Chris Rawlings perform his musical setting of Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." I think it took about a full hour, without a pause, to perform. Amazing.

Martin Hadden did a couple of British-American folkfusion LPs as "Hadden, Rothsfield & Carr" - he had a beautiful singing voice in the way of Rod Patterson (of Jock Tamson's Bairns/Easy Club) or Archie Fisher, for example. We really should've heard more of it!!!

Regal Slip - Graham & Eileen Pratt returned to recording some time ago and Ron Taylor, who also has a beautiful singing voice, made a CD with Jeff Gillett on Wildgoose label, still available.

Saw Chris Rawlings play with Gilles Lossier (and Andy Vine?) at Ginger's in Halifax - afterward, upstairs in his room, Chris showed me the chords for The Blackfly Song (Wade Hemsworth). He probably wrote out the lyrics for me as well. Nice guy! He had a great song called, "Soup du Jour", which I believe was the title of his (vinyl) album.

Speaking of Andy Vine - he picked me up hitch-hiking once in Nova Scotia. I had my guitar, which was small enough, and the front of the van big enough, that I could play him songs all the way to Montreal. I think he really enjoyed that for about the first fifteen minutes ...

Does anyone know of a singer called Doug Lewis- wrote a song called "Rebecca" or "Dancing with Rebecca" and a other called "Something Good"? I was given a tape of these years ago - great stuff - but was never able to trace anything else that he did.

I used to see him at open mics at the Press Room in NH in the 80's sometimes, I bought a tape from him, mainly because of a song about Vietnam. I know I still have the tape, but not where it is, and I don't know if Doug's still around here or not.

I used to know a Mary Smith in Greenwich Village in the '70's, good singer. We used to play a bluegrass jam at an Italian restaurant on Bleecker St. called Arturo's(?).Mary was tending bar but would join me for some tunes like QUEEN OF THE SILVER DOLLAR and I REMEMBER LOVING YOU. She had a sweet voice. I've wondered whether she's still back there.

I know that Richard Meyer was involved with the Fast Folk scene in NY and he had several albums out, mostly in the 1980's or early
1990's. He was a very good songwriter.

Haven't heard anything about him for many years though and don't know if he is still involved with the folk music scene or not. I had a few of his albums that were initially on vinyl and then released on CD's. Someone several years ago thought that he might have gotten more into rock music but not sure if that is true.

In reference to the twelve-year-old information a few posts up... I went into a little record shop in Leominster whilst on holiday and got chatting to the owner, who turns out to be none other than Andrew Dwyer. He was very friendly and has a great selection of old folk records.

In reference to the twelve-year-old information a few posts up... I went into a little record shop in Leominster whilst on holiday and got chatting to the owner, who turns out to be none other than Andrew Dwyer. He was very friendly and has a great selection of old folk records.
