Subject: Almost forgotten 70s & 80s Folk Artists From: Bernard Quenby Date: 11 Jun 08 - 09:24 AM Some folk artists seem to have been around for ever! What happened to some of the good ones from the 70s and 80s who just disappeared? Who impressed you? Bernard |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 11 Jun 08 - 09:48 AM There were so many. The Fast Folk scene here in the NYC area spawned some incredible songwriters, but I think many of them were trying to reach a level that just wasn't attainable. It seemed like an attempt to recreate the 60's folk revival but the world had moved on. When a few artists were signed by major labels (Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin for example), the rest seemed to be waiting their turn. When it did not happen, some just gave up. There are a number that still carry on and continue to perform and create exceptional music, but those are the ones who learned what the music scene was all about and they have carved their niche. I'd rather not post any names. I'm just amazed that some of these artists did not reach more ears, and I am very sorry that some of them just disappeared. |

His agent recently contacted me about playing our house concert series. Another fine singer whom I miss is Carla Sciacky. She seems to have dropped out of the folk scene altogether. SOL |

Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: GUEST Date: 16 Jun 08 - 03:12 PM In the early 70s around Toronto, there were a couple of American guys, Stu Mitchell and Jerome Smith, who were buskers and club-players. They were great interpreters and songwriters. Wherever the are, I wish them well. |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: lefthanded guitar Date: 16 Jun 08 - 05:29 PM I keep trying to remember the name of this guy, had his album but it was waterlogged & smooshed in a basement flood alas: Pearl River Turnaround- went something like "only six miles to the Pearl River Turnaround, never very far in the sun or the snow" wonderfully witty and clever songwriter. Um , lessee, he also did a story about Sally Cooking Fat, a cat who thought he was man, but based on some political figure. Had this terrific album out in the seventies, I think he hailed from New England but not sure. ARggggg, now he's even forgotten by ME but I loved his music..Stike a bell mudcatters??? ALSO wherever is the talented: Frasier and Debolt and even more talented Murray McLaughlin?? A great loss not to hear them again. Ditto about Fast Folk btw, almost every act they booked was a gem. Too bad they closed. |

Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: GUEST Date: 19 Jun 08 - 11:33 AM For Lefthanded guitar, Pearl River Turnaround and Sally Cookingfat were by Chris Rawlings. He's still around. I saw him last summer at Branches & Roots in Ormstown playing new material. Fraser & DeBolt broke up decades ago. Daisy DeBolt still releases new music on her own label and Allan Fraser pops up occasionally at folk events in Montreal. His daughter, Kaya Fraser, is quite a good singer-songwriter. Murray McLauchlan is still quite actove as a performer, recording artist and playwright. |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: folkypaul Date: 19 Jun 08 - 04:39 PM weelittledrummer Didn't Nick Fenwick play with a trio that included Mick Elliot & Ed Pickford (a great songwriter)who ran a folk Club in Sunderland called the Nickolodeon. Folkypaul |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: Houston_Diamond Date: 19 Jun 08 - 04:48 PM I don't know if you classify him as folk but I've always loved Jim Croce. I Got A Name, I Have To Say I Love You In A Song, Bad Leroy Brown such a great range of songs. He died shortly after I was born, but I love his voice and his style of song writing. Houston |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: bobad Date: 19 Jun 08 - 04:55 PM For lefthanded guitar: Chris Rawlings will be accompanying Garnet Rogers at the Apple Hollow Music Fest this summer. |

Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: Forsh Date: 19 Jun 08 - 06:36 PM Almos Forgotten? Strange concept :) I can't remember the ones I forgot! I got into folk in the 70's, & grew into it watching Martyn Carthy, Martyn Wyndham Read, Ewan McCol & Peggy Seager, Vin Garbutt, Jeremy Taylor, Joe Stead, Downes & Beer, Hamish Imlach, Oh, and my old man Alan Forshaw (Rumbylowe)... Quality Lasts, eh? Paul Downes & Jeremy Taylor will be at Clennell Hall Folk Fest 2009, as will Joe Stead with Kimber's Men. Twill be a great fest for all ye olde folkies! |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: Bill H //\\ Date: 19 Jun 08 - 06:51 PM Carla Sciaky---what a delight to see that name again. Years back she was a guest on the program with me (TRADITIONS) and I just loved her lilting voice. My understanding was that she still performes locally as a solo artists and also with a group. Her label was called Propinquity--and from that we did a little trivia contest on the program---what does it mean? Had only about 2 or 3 correct answers, as I recal.l Bill Hahn |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: GUEST Date: 19 Jun 08 - 09:44 PM "Chris Rawlings will be accompanying Garnet Rogers at the Apple Hollow Music Fest this summer." Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: Acorn4 Date: 24 Jun 08 - 06:10 PM Here's a blast from the past:- BOB LIND -what became of him? He was the one who recorded "Elusive Butterfly" - his debut album was, I seem to remember, very good and showed a lot of potential but he seemed to vanish withour trace. Rather like a more cheerful Leonard Cohen. Perhaps he never recovered from having "Butterfly" covered by Val Doonican! Interesting if anyone had any info on him. |

Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: Big Al Whittle Date: 26 Jun 08 - 06:53 AM Nick Fenwick's band , I think, were Mad Jocks and englishmen. Nick was a very funny man. Rather quiet and circumspect offstage, as I remember. My favourite from that period was Brownsville Banned. The greatest live act.....There was a sort of Bolton mafia - bob Williamson, Bernard the Knocking Nelly bloke whose name has slipped into my personal abyss, and brownsville. they were photographed together on Bob's first album. Bob's album was of course on the Sweet Folk and country label run by Joe Stead. their label mates were Downes and Beer and Dave Turner. Dave was more alternative than anybody I ever met. Nina of Hand on Heart had a decent band at the time called Blackthorn. I saw Brownsville at Nina's club a few times. there were a lot of great acts: Roger Brooks, The Maccalmans, Ian Campbell's final group with Aiden Foord, etc so it goes, as Kurt Vonnegut said! |
Subject: RE: Almost forgotten 70s Folk Artists From: GUEST,guest baz parkes Date: 26 Jun 08 - 07:02 AM WLD...that Bernard'll be Wrigley. Still working as far as I know...although my favourite Wrigley moment is as the harrassed Geography teacher in Rita, Sue and Bob Too. I eem to recall agorilla suit and Coronation Street, but that might be my personal abyss. While we're on the subject...Frogmorton? Baz |
