hi!
i have only one steelstring guitar, it`s a gibson j-185, it`s easy to play, good for live gigs (good pickup) but i miss the bass, the mids, the wooden natural sound and vibe,
that i heard, when i play other acoustic guitars, especially martins. maybe gibson is not for me. what i look for is a 000 or OM- shaped guitar, that is easy to play with a full sound,
for strumming and picking, i dont know if i can afford a martin, but if it has to be, it has to be. are there any good alternatives?

Blueridge owners seem to be happy with them. There are a lot of good to great builders making OOO and OM sized instruments these days that are highly competitive with Martins. I suggest you specify your country of location or you'll get a bunch of irrelevant reccomendations. Good luck...

If you are looking for bass you don't want OOO or OM, you want Dread or full-size jumbo.

Try one of the HPL Martins - the bass is amazing! I bought a second hand DX1R and have been blown away by its sound (I like the way it looks as well, no frills - just like me!)

Generally I'd agree with Ricard but....

I have an old Guild F-30 which is about a 000 18 if compared to Martins.
I would say that the bass on this guitar is boomier than most D sized guitars of any manufacture.   

Play a lot of guitars.   Buy the best you can afford in your budget and be less concerned about manufacturers and more concerned about how the guitar fits you.

i live in germany. the price range is 500 to 1000 euro
i played a 000-28 eric clapton signature in a shop once.
it had bass and i liked it a lot, but i couldnt afford that guitar

A lot of Martin fans without Martin money seem to be very happy with their Yamahas.

If you can:

Take your time in buying and selecting.
Try to have all the guitars that interest you together in one store.
Take along a friend who also plays reasonably well.
After inspecting all of them re: quality, etc., play each one.
Now put on a blindfold and play each one a bit.
Finally, leave the blindfold on and have your friend play each one.


The important things are quality.....will it stand the test of time?
Does it fit you and is it comfortable to hold and play?
Does it have the sound you're after?


Forget the size and make and whether or not it is rosewood and Engleman. Most of us can't do that. And if you really want a Martin then you'll never be satisfied with something else, even when the something else is demonstrably better.

The above is also a lot easier if you have already had the "Bad Martin" experience. (;<))

This place should be of some help. While the store holds an important place in the local music community here in Pittsburgh, they do most of their business online
Steve will probably steer you towards a Collings or Huss and Dalton but he has a great assortment.
