Thank you. I like this song 50 years ago - Probably when it was first recorded. Every Christmas, I think about it, and finally this Christmas, I have found it. Thank you. Heather

Subject: Lyr Add: THE WASSAIL OF FIGGY DUFF (M Flanders)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Nov 13 - 12:09 AM

Copied from a PDF at the website of Stainer & Bell, the publisher of the sheet music:

THE WASSAIL OF FIGGY DUFF
(Michael Flanders)

Oh Christmasse is icum
Mark ye Robin's ruddy tum.
And ye winde itte bloweth very rough, rough, rough,
Now do as ye be tolde
To keepe us from ye colde
And fille us up with Figgy, Figgy Duff, Figgy Duff.

So merrily we sing
For to make ye Welkin ring.
Though of singing we have hadde quite enough, nough, nough.
My maisters if you please
Give us a mouldy cheese
To eat with our Figgy, Figgy Duff, Figgy Duff.

If a cheese ye have not got
Then a groat must be our lot
As we dance round the Mistletoe Buff (Bough) Buff!
If you haven't got a groat
You can go and cut your throat
And ne'er have any Figgy, Figgy
Ne'er have any Figgy, Figgy
Ne'er have any Figgy, Figgy Duff, Figgy Duff!

Traditional words invented by Michael Flanders

I have found it.
It is indeed by Michael Flanders.
It's in '32 Galliard Carols for Christmas' published by Stainer and Bell.
The third verse goes as follows:

If a cheese you have not got,
Then a groat must be our lot,
As we dance round the mistleto-e Buff - (Bough!) - Buff!
If you haven't got a groat,
You can go and cut your throat,
And ne'er have any Figgy Figgy,
Ne'er have any Figgy Figgy,
Ne'er have any Figgy Figgy Duff. Figgy Duff!

On Donald Swann and the Olive Quantrill Singers record which was recorded Dec 12, 1979, the song is titled "Figgy Duff". I have no idea whether it is the song the OP requested.

From Memory, it is from Artisan's "Paper Angels" CD.
Just did a quick Google, that is the CD it is on.

Yes found that one too!

Here is a definition:
Figgy Duff:

"FIGGY-DOUGH (figgy-duff). Another name for Figgy-pudding. (Not common.)"

-Addy, Sidney, Oldall, A Suplement to the Sheffield Glossary, 1891, p. 45.

I was just googling the song & found this thread. I know the thread is old, but here's what I remember

Oh Christmas is i-come
Mark ye robin's ruddy tum
and the wind it e-bloweth very rough, rough rough

Now do as ye be told
and keep us from the cold
and fill us up with figgy figgy duff
figgy duff!

I learnt this in school 30 years ago!

I remember my dad singing this when I was very small - I suspect it may have been a Flanders and Swann number. I've googled it and only come with up sheet music to buy, which since I can remember the tune is a tad superfluous! Are there any kind people out there who can remember the words?

I think it started

'Christmas is i-come
Mark ye robin's ruddy tum...'

and there my memory gives out.

Thanks in advance

Chris
