Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rory o McGrawry / Rory Óg MacRory From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 31 Oct 11 - 10:08 AM Re my phonetic pronunciation attempt above, I could certainly have slightly misheard it and missed the consonant - it was in a pub with a load of people singing the chorus so perhaps either the syllables or my brain got a bit blurred. Your suggestion makes perfect sense. Wonder if this is a genuine old song or something from the pen of a songwriter...? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rory o McGrawry / Rory Óg MacRory From: MartinRyan Date: 31 Oct 11 - 09:27 AM There's a pic of Máire on THIS PAGE - together with a reminder to me as to why I always assumed it was "a Muskerry hare" with the placename pronounced as in Irish i.e. Muscaire. Phonetically, that would come out as roughly mus-kir-eh with only first syllable stressed and the eh weak. Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rory o McGrawry / Rory Óg MacRory From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 31 Oct 11 - 09:13 AM I see she's published two Junior Cert Irish-language textbooks* (if it's the same Máire ní Chéilleachair) so I suppose if anyone would know, she would! Incidentally, the friend of mine who sings this (a fluent Irish-speaker from west Cork) is a great fan of Máire's. I won't be seeing her for awhile because she's away home, but will ask and report back if she can tell me anything. Thanks! * http://www.omahonys.ie/catalog/books-by-author-Maire%2BNi%2BCheilleachair.html |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rory o McGrawry / Rory Óg MacRory From: MartinRyan Date: 31 Oct 11 - 08:12 AM The same thought had struck me about "Muisire" - I've seen several spellings and no explanation. I don't think I have Máire ní Chéilleachair's CD - she may well have a note about it - or a more convincing spelling! Regards p.s. A corner of my brain seems to hear Mary O'Hara singing this? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rory o McGrawry / Rory Óg MacRory From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 30 Oct 11 - 01:49 PM Cheers (as usual) Martin. While you're here... what does "Musire" mean? (I know people I can ask, but not till I see them.) The way I hear it sung, at least around here, is MUSH a ra (the first syllable rhyming with "push" "bush" etc). Can't find anything on Google or Google maps (in case it's a place) with either that spelling or as Muisire. And because I can't, now I really really wanna know! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rory o McGrawry / Rory Óg MacRory From: MartinRyan Date: 30 Oct 11 - 10:56 AM Not offhand - but it just strikes me that the air is the one used for "Join the British Army"! Ridim-a-dirim-a-dirim-adoo They're looking for monkeys up in the zoo And if I had a face like you I'd join the British Army!" I'll see what I can find out about Rory. Regards |

Subject: Lyr Add: RORY ÓG MACRORY From: GUEST Date: 18 Jun 08 - 09:24 PM Rory Óg MacRory 'Twas early in the month of June When first I met my own garsún, Oh! the sweetest boy in all Macroom Was Rory Óg MacRory. He took me to the fairy dell The same old story he did tell "I love the ground you walk on, Nell," Said Rory Óg MacRory. Rory here and Rory there Rollicking Rory everywhere As wild as a Musire mountain hare Was Rory Óg MacRory. He took me to Killorglin Fair The Kerry boys were dancing there, Ah! but none of them you would compare To Rory Óg MacRory. He danced the Blackbird, Kerry style, And you should see the colleens smile But I kept watching all the while For fear they'd steal my Rory. Then Father Dan he made us one, He said, "God bless my girl and son, And may all your troubles be little ones, My Rory Óg MacRory." They're dancing round and round our feet, Mike and Dan and Jer and Kate And the baby's name is Rory. |
