Sorry. Just saw this. Would chords do you or do you need tabs?

Thanks, Houston. It's a great song. I messaged the thread starter, but don't know if he needs tabs specifically. I'm an old git and have NO idea how to read tabs--or feel them, or whatever it is that people do with tabs.

I find tabs handy for doing riffs but I really prefer chords, they are a lot easier to play and at least colours the tune nicely :D

Yeah to that. Had a kid one day explain the fundamentals of tab to me, so saying I don't understand them is an exaggeration; however, I would have NO idea how to write them. I come from a time when "E in the D position" told the second guitarist all he needed. But, times change.

Did you ever hear of the Nashville system?

Actually, none of the sets of lyrics posted here are as Dick Maitland sang the song. The most notable difference being in the last line of the chorus,

"But my darling when I think of you." Not "thee", not "ye," but "you."

The last time I heard Lou Killen sing this, he was most adamant about the audience singin this correctly.

I can't comment on the chords as I'm too lazy to get out my guitar - Tom

Many thanks all, olddude, any chance you could post the chords please, anything that is labelled very easy AND a great tune sounds good to me!

Peace, that is really interesting... I've heard of numbering the scales and using a 1-3-5 as a triad for making chords plus using 1-4-5 in varying order as the chord sequence in most songs but I never knew it was named Nashville Numbering System.

Thanks for that :D

I seem to remember seeing chords numbered in that "Nashville" manner as being printed as roman numerals rather than regular arabic numbers ~ for example, I IV and V7 for the standard three-chord songs, etc.

I understand tab quite well, and can even write it when so motivated and when I have enough time on my hands. But I don't clearly understrand what might be meant by "E in the D position": does that mean capoing up two frets and playing key-of-D "shapes," resulting in key-of-E pitch? Or something else?

There are quite a few different lyrics to this great old song. I myself had never encountered the first verse referred to in the above links: our shanty group sings the first two lines as "Farewell to Prince's Landing Stage / River Mersey, fare thee well."

And then there's Bob Dylan's alternative lyrics, entitled either "Farewell" or "Restless Farewell." Both are revisions of traditional songs, and both come from Dylan's early days before be began to record. One is a reworking of this song, the other of "Parting Glass"; I can't remember which title goes with which song.

I'm partial to Bob's lyrics on the verses, but on the chorus, I much prefer the traditional words, because "It's not the leaving of Liverpool that's grieving me" scans better, and fits the melody much better, than "it's not the le-e-e-aving that's a-grieving me."

The Dylan version is in the DT; it appears under a title something like "New Leaving of Liverpool" rather than Bob's title, but the commentary clearly notes the source.
