From: Will Fly Date: 16 Jul 12 - 05:12 AM I encountered Spike on several occasions while working at the BBC and at the Hampstead Theatre Club, where his second wife, Paddy, used to perform. He could be a charming man - but also a most difficult one - and, as he freely admitted, suffered from bipolar disorder for much of his life. "I'm mad - and I've got the paperwork to prove it..." I loved his radio work, and enjoyed the 'Beachcomber' series on TV - alas, now all wiped - but I personally thought the 'Q' series was complacent and unfunny. It seemed to me that he was resting on a reputation and supposed that anything he did, such as gurning to the camera and giggling, would automatically be entertaining. None of which detracts from his prime place in modern comedy. |

I recall coming across a shelf of Goon recordings, all on vinyl. I was allowed to take them home, one at a time each evening, to play at home and then return in the morning. Hours of fun. It was a little disconcerting at first, but I liked the humor. After about 20 minutes, we suddenly realized that we had been listening to one show out of the left speaker and a totally different show out of the right. Now that was a real Goon Show experience! |

This may have been not entirley unconnected with the Suez Crisis, I don't know. As the canal thus cut the bottom half of the continent away from the top, giant carpet tacks would be used to nail down the southern bank and stop southern Africa from falling off. Because ships can sink, the canal would be used by aeroplanes. "But aeroplanes can crash." "They'll carry lifeboats!" "But lifeboats can sink." It's influence on me has been incalculable. It may be the reason that I find YOUR approach screamingly funny while other more stable folk shake their collective heads at your ramblings and mutter "grow up, Possum-Boy!" Cletus and Buford are very similar to Goonshow characters "Eccles, and Bluebottle". They are of course, alter-egos to their authors, and just like my moronic in-bred, ice-fishin' rural Canadjun' (half) brothers Reg, Reg, and Reg, allow their creator to get away with murder. Only fly in the ointment is the British slang, and impenetrable dialects. It takes a while to really get a handle on what they're saying, 'cause the dialogue is rapid fire to say the least. Also the Goonshow would be seen as overtly offensive and racist in North America today. The characters Mr. Thing (first name: Sinjiz) and Mr. Lalcacca, are Hindus, who no matter what parts they play in each show, always have time to make curry, and discuss flaming funeral pyres. Ray Ellington (cousin of the Duke) the bandleader often takes part in the skits as "Big Chief Ellinga" a cannibal, who trumpets (in a metaphorical sense) "Ballaballaboomboom, me want eat you up!" Other characters include: an overtly Jewish cockney theatrical agent who constantly drools over "all that lovely money", Colonel Bloodnock; a wicked portrait of an elderly demented British army officer, Neddy Seagoon, the whitest, dumbest wasp on the face of the earth. Moriarty and Gritpipe-Thynne, two scheming and slimey homosexuals, Flower, and Dew: two VERY OUT gay boys, who upon seeing a catholic priest waving one of those smoking incense burner things, douse him with water because,"I thay there, you're handbag's on fire!".....And these are the LEAST offensive characters! Funny thing is that apparently in it's hey-day (the fifties) minorities loved it, and would tune in often just to hear Sellers, Milligan, or Secombe, send them up! |

There is some film of at least one recording session; and there's the famous Last Goon Show of All, which was televised, and I think it's available on video While the live performance seems to have been excruciatingly funny, I think seeing them on the radio was much better - I'm sure you know what I mean,Rick! You may have noticed that often the crowd laughs for no apparent reason, well that was when some business was going on and sometimes not necessarily to do with the actual speakers (ie milligan "killing" Sellars while Seacombe talks). From: Rick Fielding Date: 28 May 99 - 12:47 AM I fully realise that this thread will not have much in the way of mainstream interest, but after our instructional session tonight the incredibly brilliant and worldly Peter T. and I talked "Goon Show" stuff for half an hour! I'm in humour heaven! When I was about 7 years old the C.B.C. (Canadian Broadcorping Castration) ran a series of British comedy shows on the radio Saturday mornings, and since My Dad kept the radio on while he worked in his shop - And I busied myself with wooden sword making I got turned on to something, that along with baseball and music has been a driving force in my life. It took a while to understand the dialects, Brit references, and the off beat humour itself, but to this day I can quote long passages from Bluebottle, Bloodnock, Little Jim, and the rest of Spike Milligan's wonderful characters. This led to an appreciation of the comedy recordings of Peter Sellers and the shows of Tony Hancock - surely two of the funniest and most tragic entertainers of our time. But enough reminiscing, I actually have a question. Did any Mudcatter ever see the Goons live? What was it like?
P.S....Although I admit to being impressed by Heather's legs when I first met her, the fact that she did a very good Minnie Bannister sure didn't hurt! |
