As some of you know, Macmillan Cancer Support took care of my dad, Tony Rose, six years ago when he was ill.

Next April my friend and I are going to China to do a seven-day trek along parts of the wall, including through the Yanshan Mountains and 300 steps of Heaven's Ladder, to raise money for this wonderful charity.
Macmillan were a massive support to all of us at this time, and I want to give something back and make sure that other people living with cancer have the chance to experience the work they do, until such time as they are no longer needed in the world!

We need all the support we can get so if anyone at all is interested in finding out more about this, or sponsoring us, then more details can be found here -

We're after encouragement and spreading-the-word as much as sponsorship so if anyone has any training tips or China info then it's all much appreciated!!

cheers, Laura

Worthy cause and all, but may I ask why hiking the Great Wall? Sounds like a fascinating thing to do, of course, I just wondered what, if any, was the connection.

No specific connection - but it's a challenge. The climate, altitude and terrain will make it more of a challenge than we could do in England in the same amount of time, and having a challenge gives us more motivation and hopefully generates a higher amount of interest in the charity.

Incidentally, after the summer I'l be going back to London for uni - where there are much less hills and paths to walk on. I'll go to the gym but I was wondering if anyone knows anywhere good in London or near it for 'proper' walks?

Good luck to you and I hope you post as often as possible whilst trekking or blog it or something where we can follow along. Maybe you should ask Michael Palin to travel along? He's done those great sort of eccentric travel shows and would certainly have some experience to share AND bring a lot of publicity. Well, it's a thought at least.:-)

What a grand adventure!

I have written to him before so maybe he'll remember me!
Haha... maybe not.

I'm paying for the flights myself. Actually.

Abusive post to which Laura replied has been deleted.

And this is a charity that is extremely important to me.
It's not a randomly picked thing for a holiday.

AND since when has wandering round a lake been a challenge?
Would you sponsor someone to walk round and round a lake?

Fair enough you don't agree with it, and you can think of better ways to spend/raise money - fine - but how dare you suggest I'm just trying to get a free holiday.
