Subject: Tech: Leadbelly Discography From: GUEST,cStu Date: 23 Jun 08 - 03:09 PM There used to be a great online Leadbelly Discography at http://cycad.com/cgi-bin/Leadbelly/discog/ but it hasn't worked for a few weeks (at least). Does anyone know of a similar resource, or alternatively how to find it in Googles Cached Pages, or another archive facility? Thanks |
Subject: RE: Tech: Leadbelly Discography From: 12-stringer Date: 23 Jun 08 - 07:21 PM I use the ones in the Wolfe/Lornell book and in Dixon/Godrich/Rye. The latter only goes to 1943 but is better indexed. Neither is up to date on recent CDs, but all of them are repackage jobs anyway. However, this brings up something for me: http://web.archive.org/web/20060223104318/http://cycad.com/cgi-bin/Leadbelly/discog/ According to the headnote, it's based on Wolfe and Lornell. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Leadbelly Discography From: Leadbelly Date: 25 Jun 08 - 01:35 PM 12-stringer: Do you know whether the LoCR's on CD's are issued in total i.e. with chats in-between times resp. explanations of Leadbelly concerning his songs? Long time ago I listened to these recordings which were available on some LP's. They included all talks between Huddie and Lomax which was very interesting and sometimes hard to understand. Thanks, Manfred |
Subject: RE: Tech: Leadbelly Discography From: 12-stringer Date: 25 Jun 08 - 07:41 PM Sorry, I don't know anything about the LOC stuff on CD; I've never heard any of them. I'm one of the last dinosaurs converting to CD and didn't even have a player until about 3 years ago. I had -- still have -- these recordings on the 3-LP Elektra set from the late 1960s, whose notes leave a little to be desired (song texts are good and very accurate, but the dates/places of the recordings are omitted altogether), though they do include much of the conversation before and after the songs, and the talk is transcribed in the notes booklet. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Leadbelly Discography From: Leadbelly Date: 26 Jun 08 - 04:12 AM Might have been the records I have heard in 1964, but without any booklet. Got it from an "America House" in Hamburg/Germany. Again, thanks to you, Manfred |
Subject: RE: Tech: Leadbelly Discography From: Thomas Stern Date: 22 Mar 11 - 01:18 PM DOCUMENT Records (UK) has issued almost every Leadbelly recording, including the Library of Congress material. Better sound, annotations, packaging on the CD's issued by the owning companies (e.g. Smithsonian-Folkways, Columbia, RCA), usually. However, Document's complete chronological presentation is worth having, and has material not otherwise available.
