Thanks!

My old mentor Bill Bonyun used to enjoy singing this song as well.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well I have a few Newfie friends that I'll give a call to. Maybe they can shed some light.

Adrien-

It's not an easy one to crack!

I was fishing around this morning for at least an hour on Goggle.

Well I'll be damn. I thought this tune would be easy to find. I was sure it came from Newfoundland. Here are a few lines that I remember.

Rory get the dory, there's herring in the bay
Put on your old sowester (Fishing hat),
And will be on our way.
There's a school of herring to be caught.

so on and so on. That's all I remember.
Beer (adrien)

We used to her this song sung on the radio in the early 1960's in Maine. A friend would love to have the full lyrics.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I found this longer quote in Happy Days: My Mother, My Father, My Sister & Me by Shana Alexander, 1995, page 275:
    Rory, get the dory.
There's a herring in the bay.
    Rory, get the dory
    E'er* the herring swims away.
    Oh, Rory, oh, begorrah, oh,
    We're going to eat today!
    Rory, get the dory.
There's a herring in the bay.
*(sic; should be "ere")

This is a fairly popular book; you might be able to get it in a local library.

Thanks, Jim. I'd like to know more about the Portuguese thing.

I found this in another forum:
It reminded me of another [song my mother] was singing one time as we rowed out to a mooring on a still night. It went:

Rory, get your dory. There's a herring in the bay.
Rory got his dory and the herring went away.

My father told her to pipe down, advising her that this was some type of slander against the Portuguese.

Thanks, Jim! I will pass that along.

Thanks, again, to both of you.

Here's the quote from So Far, a memoir by Joyce McDonald Brown (Victoria, B.C.: Trafford, 2006), page 48:
Jack and Andy had grown up together in New Brunswick and regaled us with stories of fishing from a dory in the Atlantic. Most of the stories seemed to revolve around the expression,

"Hurry, Rory. Get the dory. There's an 'erring in the bay."

We never could figure out what this expression meant in relation to the stories....

Thank you. I think it is something to do with my browser. This time, I got the same message on page 48, but when I scrolled down print showed up on subsequent pages. I was able to then scroll back to page 48 and read the relevant text. Seems it may just be an expression. Thank you, very much, Martin.

It's on Page 48 of the text. I picked it up with a Google search on "rory get the dory" - and it seems happy enough to link me back to it directly. Curious.

Thanks, Martin, but do you know what page it was on? When I click on your link, I get a blank page with a message saying my viewing of that book is done.

A friend remembers her granddad singing this song to her. He was from the coast of Nova Scotia. She can only remember the following and we're wondering if it is just a fun thing in itself or if it is part of a song:

Rory get the dory, there's herring in the bay
Rory got the dory, but the herring got away!

Thanks,

kat
