Maybe I'm an old fogey folkie. Just read an AP blurb on the Newport Folk Festival. Artist scheduled to appear include Brian Wilson (of Beach Boys fame), Jimmy Buffet, Trey Anastasio, the Black Crowes, and Stephan and Damian Marley. I had a difficult time believing this line up at a Folk Festival.

I enjoy Brian Wilson and Jimmy Buffet, but they seem a long way from folk.

Any other opinions?

Big RiB

Ummm...I was just reading that Ray Davies late of The Kinks is appearing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, in Canada. It all goes back to that arguement of what is folk music.

No Roger you ain't an old fogie folkie, you just aren't falling for the "folk" line. I don't know what it is with these festival promoters, why they'd sully the name of their festivals with the word folk when they could do a hell of a lot better advertizing it the way it really is & not trying to sell people on what it's really NOT.

Raises another question - why do so many people who make a point of how much they despise and detest folk music, want to broaden the definition to cover themselves, instead of billing themselves as something else.

I don't like opera, but I don't want to expand the definition of opera to cover any fat bloke who shouts a lot, just so that I can call myself an opera singer.

Mind you, I'd probably get a grant if I did.

The last time I attended a Newport Folk Festival, Janis Joplin was a featured act. She may still have been working with her original San Francisco bandmates, Big Brother and the Holding Company, or maybe not. (When Janis "hit the big time" with a major-label contract, the suits fired her hippie/acidhead band, assigned her an all-star session-player combo, and named it the "Full Tilt Boogie Band.")

Whatever year that was (1968 or '69, probably), there were still plenty of "real" folk acts on the bill, and even among the more modern electrified bands, most were arguably within an American folk traditon ~ such as Junior Wells & Buddy Guy and other urban-blues acts.

Times have changed; very few big-time big-money festivals are going to be presented without at least a few top-selling acts who are not going to meet anyone's definition of "folk."

For my tastes, and my own peculiar/personal idea of what consititutes "folk," there's more logic to including blues-rock, roots-rock, or even "classic-rock" ensembles ~ who at least present music that people can sing along to, or at least dance to ~ as opposed to some of the current singer-songwriter acts often classified as "folk," specifically those who do not invite audience prticiaption at all, but rather seem to expect a quasi-reverential brand of silent listening.

Folk, Schmolk! That's what happens when you have younger promoters putting on a fesival purporting to represent a music genre, the nature of which they are abysmally ignorant. Where are Bjork and Baby Face, for heaven's sake?? Is Don Imus M.C.?

PoppaGator, I knew I recognized you from Newport. Your memory is far better than mine. That was my last time too. If I remember right, either 68 or 69 was the last of the Newport Folk Festivals until it was revived in later yrs. I made it to whatever was the last on & the 1 or 2 prior to that.
